Notre-Dame des Doms Carol 1-12
ALAS! WE'LL FIND HIM, POOR THING!
(English translation)

1 Ay! We'll find him, poor thing !
Maybe lain on a threshing floor
With the plough animals
That warm his poor abode,
Having nothing to make
A little fire.

Refrain
Let's pray to Jesus and Mary,
To Joseph the good old man,
That he'll grant us the boon
To see God this year.

2 As soon as we've arrived at the village
Where the good child was born
We'll pay a great tribute to him,
All together, on our knees
And we'll ask the old man
To put away our presents.

3 Here is the place, countrymen,
Come on, let's break into an aubade
To the new mother's child,
Praying to him to fully keep
The covenant he gave us
For winning his paradise.
Note about "Pecaire!": This word literally translates as "sinner" and if you ever visit Southern France you'll hear it either in its original form (pecaire) or its regionally Gallicized form (peuchère); "poor dear" or "poor thing" are the best English equivalent I could think of. As an exclamation, it conveys the same shade of misfortune as in "woe is…"

AI! LO TROBAREM, PECAIRE!
(Provençal lyrics, classical norm)

1 Ai! Lo trobarem, pecaire!
Benlèu cochat en un aire
Ambe lei bèstis d'araire
Que caufan son paure luòc,
A fauta d'aver per faire
Solament un pauc de fuòc.

Refrin
Preguèm Jèsus e Maria,
Josèp, lo bòn sénher grand,
Que nos faga a tots la gràcia
De veire Dieu dins un an.

2 Tre arribats au vilatge
Ont es nat l'enfant tan sage,
Li farem tots grand omatge
A genolhs toteis ensèm,
E diren a sénher màger
Qu'estrème nòstrei presents.

3 Vesaici lo luòc, bregada,
Sus, fasèm petar l'aubada
Per l'enfant de l'acochada,
Li pregant de ben gardar
La lei que nos a donada
Per son paradís ganhar.
Noël de Notre-Dame des Doms 1-12
NOUS LE TROUVERONS, MES FRÈRES
(Singable French version)

1 Nous le trouverons, mes frères,
Peut-êtr' couché sur une aire
Et des animaux derrière
Réchauffant son pauvre lieu,
Sans le moindre bois pour faire
Seulement un peu de feu.

Refrain
Prions Jésus et Mari-e,
Joseph, le bon charpentier,
Qu'ils nous fass'nt la grâce béni-e
D'aller voir Dieu dans l'année.

2 À l'arrivée au village
Où est né l'enfant si sage,
Nous lui rendrons un hommage
À genoux tous humblement,
Et Joseph selon l'usage
Rangera tous nos présents.

3 Voici donc le lieu, brigade,
Faisons retentir l'aubade,
Pour l'enfant de l'accouchée,
Le priant de bien garder
La loi qu'il nous a donnée,
Pour son paradis gagner.
