NOËLS DE NOTRE-DAME DES DOMS, PROVENÇAL CAROLS
Notes about some words: some specific words are often used, so instead of writing a note at the bottom of each and every song including any of them, here there are: "bregado/bregada": "group/brigade": here, band of shepherds, set of co-workers, coterie of people...) The term "bregado/bregada" often has a militant connotation and implies a common aim. We've translated it as "countrymen" "counfraire/confraire": member of the same brotherhood or just co-worker, colleague. "coumpaire/compaire" (fem: "coumaire/comaire"): fellow-countryman/woman, neighbor, friend/buddy. "sénher/senhor": senhor is mainly a term of address and means lord, but it can also be used otherwise. Sénher can mean either lord, sir, gentleman or Mr. according to the context, i.e. "Nòstre Sénher"= "Our Lord", "un sénher vièlh" = an old gentleman, "Sénher!" = "Sir!", "Sénher Untal" = "Mr. So-and-So". In Provence "sénher grand" was used to mean "grand-father" hence also "old man" "sus": "come on", "get going" it's an expression used to exhort, encourage, urge on |

Subject: NDDD thread change history From: Monique Date: 19 Dec 11 - 01:50 PM This post describes significant edits which have been made to messages after they were posted; it does not list when new song entries are added, as the posting dates reflect this. We're in the process of revising the Provençal lyrics and making other changes which affect the ABC scores. Also, in the scores, after the modernized notation, we now include an approximation of the original music notation.

Subject: ABCs, MIDIs and scores for NDDD carols From: Monique Date: 19 Dec 11 - 01:50 PM [Message from Artful Codger] ABCs, MIDIs and PDF scores for these songs currently may be downloaded from this SkyDrive repository: (CLICK). The scores include only the first verse and refrain (if any), in the Provençal classical norm. With the ABC notation you can generate your own MIDIs and scores, possibly transposed to a different key or modified in some other way. If transposing, I recommend that you first remove any "Original notation" sections. My notation uses ABC version 2 extensions and abcm2ps-specific directives which may cause problems for convertion tools other than those based upon abc2midi and abcm2ps. I recommend using the online converter at mandolintab.net (but pass it individual tunes, instead of the entire NDDD tunebook!) Don't bother with the Concertina.net converter; it cannot handle my notation. For writing or converting ABC on your own computer, several packages exist which integrate the compatible programs, such as Nils Liberg's EasyABC (available pre-built for Mac and Windows, with simple installation). They should also be capable of loading the entire tunebook. For most songs, the original 16th/17th c. manuscripts include music notation, from which the scores were derived. No meter was indicated, and temporary variations in meter were common and not overtly flagged. Meter notations and bar line placements in the modern notation have been inferred. The musical notation in the second collection largely corresponds to modern notation (apart from bar lines and persistence of accidentals), so for those songs I present only the original notation, as closely as I can emulate it. We have had to guess at the appropriate tempos; the transcribed scores contain no tempo indications. Sometimes we were aided by finding recordings of the pieces; at other times we were guided only by the tone of the words, bearing in mind that noëls of the period were commonly set to dance tunes or the tunes of popular secular songs. Any glaring differences in tempo from actual practice in Provence are largely my own. --AC (Jump to quick links) |

Subject: Lyr Add: Sus, levem-nos, bregada From: Monique Date: 01 Feb 12 - 03:44 PM There are two transcriptions of this carol on the manuscript.
(2) A consistory, in RCC is a meeting of the cardinals summoned by the pope; outside the RCC, the word may also apply to a local administrative body. (3) The version you'll find at the bottom is previous to this one which has one more verse. It's clearly visible on the manuscript, the handwriting is quite different, the spelling of the version above is better. Though, the first version gives this word as "cou" (neck/collar) and "un cou de pelisson" did have a meaning: a fur collar, here to keep the baby from the cold while "un cor de pelisson" (a fur heart) is quite puzzling.

* The manuscript is hardly readable here, it's the best solution I found that fits both rhythm and sense though the verb "ravir" = to delight would be "ravissián" in the imperfect.
