Or, find a nice narrow shrub with lots of heavy branches suitable for hanging shoes on -- here in California I'd use a manzanita; don't know much about east coast shrubs -- cut it down, strip the leaves, mount it on a base. You'll have the definitive shoe tree. Then you might put your eye out running into a high heel in the middle of the night, I suppose, but at least you won't trip anymore.
