My paternal grandmother lost her father to typhoid fever when she was very young, and as a result, spent a number of years of her youth in a Masonic orphanage, with visits to her Mom. Her brother died at the orphanage from TB. Late in her life she expressed she preferred the orphanage to living with her mom. Had company and friends in the orphanage, and when with her mom, was isolated on a hard scrabble dirt farm in eastern Kentucky.

Lots of kids today grow up without their fathers around. Not necessarily because the fathers don't want to be involved. It has seemed to me, over the years here on Mudcat, that we have a higher number of engaged and committed dad's than is representative of the general population in the western world. Just an impression. Could be distorted. Regardless, I'll repeat, Happy Fathers Day all you Mudcat fathers.
