From what I have been told living and being born in Cornwall it's a sing about the Cornish Bal maids, they were the young girls that worked in the Cornish mines, started work around the age of 10 and having enjoyed the Cornish sunshine until then their cheeks warm and red, after years of working in the arsenic rich air they became pale and sick, that's the story I was always told anyway |
