The song was written by TP Cummins of Virginia, Co Cavan and published on 16th December 1911 in The Irish Weekly. This was the weekly newspaper produced in conjunction with the Belfast daily newspaper The Irish News. The verses were one of three prize winning entries in a competition. Great sleuthing by Eugene Dunphy and revealed earlier in 2024.
