Folkies? Where? My introduction to Black Betty is an OLD Lomax recording. According to his notes, black betty refers to the whip used to beat the slaves - gives meaning to "Blam-ba-lam" and "dipped in gravy" Yes, Leadbelly did it too. I can't hear it without shuddering.
