Art...interesting that you would pick that Stan song as one of your favorites. It's called "Flying" and it was Stan's only hockey song. I don't even know if he was all that big a fan.
The song was inspired when Stan met a neighbor of mine, Ron Wallace, who, when a teenager, was well on his way to becoming an NHL player. Unfortunately he suffered an Orr-like knee injury which side-lined him forever. He went on to coach junior hockey (actually coached Gretsky and Coffey at on point) but eventually ended up selling hot tubs for a living.
For me the song deals with the same subject as that found in Stan's song, "Second Effort" - it's all about falling short of expectations (your's or others').
By the way, I'm not playing guitar on this cut. The electric lead is Bob Mann, a great player who later went on to play with James Taylor.
