Subject: RE: Mudcat Tavern -- Round 3! From: Fadac Date: 26 Jul 99 - 10:10 AM Loch Lomand a great tune. The MacFarland clan comes from the shores of Loch Lomand. So the tune has extra meaning for us. (sigh) The story that I heard, about the low road. The low road is how your soul travels after death to get home. I had heard the story that the English (nach) had a big prison full of Scottish Jackobites. Well, the care in there wasn't very good, and they died like flies. So the prisoners that were reliesed, took the "High Road" home. Those that died in captivity, they took the "Low Road". Now listen to the song, with that in mind and it makes sence, with the never never meet again line. Anyway my .02 worth on a pre-coffee monday. (Ack!) -Fadac |

Naomi Mitchison used it in her book "To the Chapel Perilous", and I never understood what it meant. She always writes as though the reader knows what she knows, and she came from a very well-educated family. Thanks. Glad I popped in just now, but I can't hang around, as I have a classroom to clear. Actually that joke was told me this weekend by a Mexican: I always admire people who can tell a joke in a foreign language, I know I couldn't (and she's justwritten a science PhD in English!). Today I feel like one of the barflies waiting for Hickey in The Iceman Cometh. I'll just have to figure out which one. Probably Slade, old fatalist philosopher. I hate Mondays - wonder what percentage of all the blues tunes were written on Monday? Maybe if I sit here long enough I'll see some more old ghosts wander in.... |

He turns back to the table, bends an elbow, throught the glass bottom of his drinking mug, he sees the face of a young girl in a red hooded cape smiling at him from around the corner of the bar. Neil's mates: "Hey, chum, wake up! Are ya alright? That was a fast tumble from a low chair. What in the world's up with you? Here, take a swig; it'll put hair on yer chest! Subject: RE: Mudcat Tavern -- Round 3! From: LEJ Date: 26 Jul 99 - 02:22 PM Hey gang! Sorry to stick bbc with all the drink and food duties, but I am just screwing down the last of the planks on the new outdoor deck. We will have a wet bar AND a cappucino bar under the awning out there. I could hear somebody playing Abilene- man that one is one of my favorites, along with Goodnight Irene. I remember driving through Kansas one May night, and stopping for gas at about 2:30 am. I was singing Goodnight Irene to keep myself awake, and when I pulled up to the pump I was still singing it. The attendant filled the tank, then stepped up to the driver window and sang harmony on a verse. Sounded so good we sang another one. Seems like everytime we change threads, we pick up a new hero of the Beat Generation. Now Cassady and Kerouac are sharing their booth with Ginsburg and Kesey. No you can't see em, but nevertheless they are there. They become quite visible on full moon nights about closing time, but if you listen closely you can hear Kerouac's non-stop patter, Cassady's laugh, Ginsburg spouting esoteric imagery, and Kesey ordering more of the blue onion rings (yeah, I know they aren't blue- you try telling him!).Kind of an undercurrent to the usual din of conversation in here. Yes, it's the booth directly below the bay window with the Mudcat Tavern lettering. PJ doesn't realize it, but she's actually sitting on Cassady's lap right now. I try to steer people away from sitting in that booth, because all kinds of weird things happen, like when Kesey slipped LSD in that CPA's Sprite. " Happy Trails to you... " |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Tavern -- Round 3! From: Banjer Date: 26 Jul 99 - 07:09 PM What a mental picture that is.....O my Lord....I'll be having nightmares tonight for sure....Maybe if I play some Old Timey Gospel it will relax and calm the frazzled mentals.... On a more serious note, the Loch Lomond story I got from a friend who sings a very beautiful version of the song is that it is the story of two captured soldiers, both from the same village. One was condemned to die and the other released. The song is the words of the condemned prisoner to his fellow villager...Again, here the 'low road' is the one that follows death, while the 'high road' takes the living home. So as is typical of folklore, one doesn't know which version to subscribe to, but the interpretation of the high and low appears to be the same in both cases.

Subject: RE: Mudcat Tavern -- Round 3! From: Angus McSweeney Date: 26 Jul 99 - 10:31 PM OK, all this talk of ghosts and Little Red Riding Hood has put me in mind of a tune. Remember Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven?" OK, good...now, remember that junky 60's song "Hey there, Little Red Ridin' Hood, You sure are lookin' good, you're everything a big bad wolf could want....Ahooooooooo!" Now, with just a few minor modifications, you can sing a REALLY LONG SONG: (same tune) "Once upon a midnight dreary, As I pondered weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore" You have to play with that last phrase a little, but I always thought (after about 3 scotch's, that I had stumbled upon an absolutely criminal fusion. Any takers? Oh, yeah...this is good scotch...got a Tombstone Pizza back there? Want to continue this fusion stuff... Peter, I know you can sing along on this one, maybe try those finger picks! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Tavern -- Round 3! From: Dave Swan Date: 28 Jul 99 - 11:47 AM Morning bbc, Spaw, R the Zim, we'd better have a close look at the jello delivery. I've heard that unscrupulous wholesalers are repackaging nut and vegetable jello moulds in plain fruit contaniners. Zim, you could have been had, and I hate to think what could happen if someone slid into a celery/walnut clot during the afternoon match. What's the world come to when you can't trust jello? May I have a little something to make my coffee more interesting? E.S. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Tavern -- Round 3! From: bbc Date: 28 Jul 99 - 01:21 PM Mornin', Dave! Anything you like! That's the wonderful thing about a cyber-menu; we have anything you want (within loose bounds of propriety--see Leeg for the other stuff!)! A little whipped cream on the top? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Tavern -- Round 3! From: Dave Swan Date: 28 Jul 99 - 03:55 PM No thanks, maybe a blob of jello, though. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Tavern -- Round 3! From: WyoWoman Date: 28 Jul 99 - 09:03 PM I'm sorry. I simply cannot wrestle in banana Jello. That color is not on my chart and it looks simply ghastly on me. If he starts singing "Da Night Before Larry Wuz Stretched" you may want to consider throwing in the towel. And I, Mudcat Mick, will be taking on THE FEARLESS FEARSOME FICKLE FECUNDIOUS FAIR ALISON in what may very well be the wrestling match of the century. You will not want to miss this one, pholks. My, that banana jello does give you an interesting aroma! Hope there are no monkeys loose tonight! Uh oh, where's catspaw? BTW, who won? Art, are you ok? Come on over here & catch your breath! Well I'll have a quick one I.D.? Well I've got my out-patient's card for the Neil Young Center (I've been practicing my American spelling- two countries divided by a common langauge). Stay tuned! catspaw, was that water for you or the wrestlers? Just checking. Roger, thanks for the Dr. Bronner's. We'll dedinitely need it to get the cranberry stains off! Let's take a time-out, so Cap't Bob can give the pool a little stir. That Yamaha sure comes in handy! I'm going in the back, to mix up some jello shots for the after-party.
