Subject: Lyr Add: STANDING ON THE PROMISES (Carter, 1886) From: toadfrog Date: 30 Jun 01 - 06:52 PM This is one of the best hymns, or "gospel songs," if you like, I have ever heard! How come it isn't on DT? STANDING ON THE PROMISESRussell Kelso Carter, 1886 Standing on the promises of Christ my King, Through eternal ages let his praises ring, Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing, Standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises, standing on the promises, Standing on the promises of God, my Savior. Standing on the promises, standing on the promises, I'm Standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises that cannot fail, When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail. By the living word of God I shall prevail Standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises I now can see Perfect present cleansing in the blood for me, Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free, Standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises of God the Lord, Bound to Him eternally by Love's strong cord, Overcoming daily with the Spirit's word, Standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises, I cannot fall, Listening every moment to the Sprit's call Trusting in my Savior as my all and all, Standing on the promises of God. The song, with a MIDI, is on CyberHymnal. Recorded by Tennessee Mountaineers, for Victor label on August 5, 1927, Available on "The Bristol Sessions" (CMF Records, whoever they are. Recorded in 1981 by Angel Band, which includes at least one Mudcat, under the auspices of Ms. Jean Redpath, among others. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Standing on the Promises From: Bill D Date: 30 Jun 01 - 11:05 PM ah, there are SO many good gospel songs that aren't in the DT, just as there are many Bluegrass and blues that aren't there....but there are sites that specialize in gospel, and they can focus better on that narrow segment of music. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Standing on the Promises From: Stewie Date: 01 Jul 01 - 12:33 AM Toadfrog, CMF Records is the record label of the Country Music Foundation. 'The Bristol Sessions' is a magnificent 2-CD set - CMF-011-D. Indispensible to any decent collection of old-time music. Check out their 3-CD anthology of cajun music - an absolutely amazing collection. --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Standing on the Promises From: wysiwyg Date: 01 Nov 03 - 02:24 PM Hear a bluesy version at VOICES ACROSS AMERICA. The low harmony line is sung so strongly that the melody line actually becomes the harmony. "Pass Me Not" and several others done there too with the same effect. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Standing on the Promises From: Bill D Date: 01 Nov 03 - 02:46 PM *tsk*...interesting ...but the bluesy approach is not by style. I like the old-time 'straight' version. This makes it seem like the focus is on the group, not on the song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Standing on the Promises From: wysiwyg Date: 01 Nov 03 - 02:53 PM It's as they use it in worship, Bill, and I think for them it is a valid expression of the interior experience. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Standing on the Promises From: Bill D Date: 01 Nov 03 - 05:47 PM ok...I guess so. We all express our interiors differently...*smile* (mine is pretty plain, I guess) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Standing on the Promises From: NH Dave Date: 01 Nov 03 - 09:16 PM I would suggest that the chorus is usually sung: S T A N D I N G , S T A N D I N G , Standing on the promises, standing on the promises, Standing on the promises of God, my Savior. S T A N D I N G , I'M S T A N D I N G , Standing on the promises, standing on the promises, I'm Standing on the promises of God. I don't know which voice sings each part of the first and third lines, I suppose the sopranos and tenors would do the drawn out line while the altos and bass do the compact ones. All in all it is a nice souding spiritual. Dave |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Standing on the Promises From: Bill D Date: 02 Nov 03 - 10:39 AM (hi Susan) yes, Dave..that's the way I have heard it mostly. In the groups I hang out with, enough know it so that people just pick the part they feel like doing, and it seems to work fine. (I 'hear' in my head the strong voice and piano playing of Helen Schneyer, the best Jewish gospel singer you'll ever meet, keeping the beat steady for a room full of singers. Ah, nostalgia! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Standing on the Promises From: Stewie Date: 02 Nov 03 - 08:40 PM The Tennessee Mountaineers recording has been reissued also on Various Artists 'How Can I Keep From Singing: Early American Religious Music and Song Vol I' Yazoo CD 2020. --Stewie. |
