Subject: Lyr Req: ISO gardening song performed by Metamora
From: GUEST,ellen
Date: 22 Jun 04 - 06:13 PM

In the late 80s I heard Metamora (Malcolm Dalgliesh, Pete Sutherland, Grey Larsen) at a concert in Salt Lake City. They performed a gardening song that I loved. It wasn't Inch by Inch or Homegrown Tomatoes. And it wasn't My Little Potato, which they also performed.

I vaguely remember this song having many words. So far as I know they never recorded it.

I still want to learn this song. Did anyone else with a better memory catch this tour?

I'd love to know the name of the song and who wrote it. Lyrics and tune would be great, or where I might find a recorded version.

Thanks
Ellen

I think this is the one, from one of Metamora's friends:

Dillon Bustin, "Gardening",
Dillon Bustin's Almanac, June Appal Records

Well: just in case, I'll go ahead and type them in as the tape plays:

"Mountain Field" by ((?) one of the 3) on the self-titles *Metamora* cassette, Sugar Hill # PS-C-1131

It's one more year this mountain field I'll till
It's one more year this mountain field I'll till
No stones or buried sticks
Again to play me tricks
I wish I knew my darling's heart so well

When it was fine and dry I prayed for rain
When it was fine and dry I prayed for rain
But when those drops did fall
Many weeds grew tall
Well it's then I wish(ed?) the sun would shine again

Now a farmer plants by season and by sign
That farmer plants by season and by sign
Not so (??) fragile seed;
It's sown in time of need
It will not grow but by its own design

(Repeat first stanza)

Yeah those guys do/did good work.

MOUNTAIN FIELD

It's one more year this mountain field I till
It's one more year this mountain field I till
No stones, nor buried sticks
Again can play me tricks

I wish I knew my darling's heart is well.
When it was fine and dry I prayed for rain
When it was fine and dry I prayed for rain
But when the rain drops fall
And all the weeds grow tall

It's then I pray the sun would shine again.
A farmer sows my seeds and by signs.
A farmer sows my seeds and by signs.
Not so love's fragile seed,
It's sown in time of need
And will not grow but by it's own desire.

I forgot that Straw into Gold recorded this, too. I can see that you have copied the lyrics directly from their sheet, GEST, but where we have discrepancies at least some of mine I think are right.

One of them is "of the cloth" which could mean she tweak that line about "farmer sows my seeds" -- is that on the tape where she's preggers on the cover? The one about fruits of love, or whatever?

Oh well, maybe Dick will find these to harvest anyway.

I'm sure there is a better way to notify him, and I'm sure I'll hear about it.

Subject: Lyr Req: Gardening (Dalglish Larsen Sutherland)
From: GUEST,ClaireBear

I'm trying to reacquaint myself with a song that I believe is called "Gardening," or possibly "The Gardening Song," recorded by Dalglish, Larsen, and Sutherland many years ago on a cassette called, I think, "Root Crops and Ground Cover."

I've had no luck finding the lyrics on the Web except one uncredited reference to the first line, which goes as follows:

"Oh my friends, it's springtime again. Buds are swelling on every limb. The peepers do call, small birds do sing, and my thoughts return to gardening."

I used to have the cassette, but it's gone walkabout. Has anyone got the lyrics, or can anyone point me to where I can rebuy the cassette? I'm having no luck, but it doesn't seem to me that it ought to be so hard to find.

Thanks!

Subject: Lyr Req: GARDENING (Dillon Bustin)
From: GUEST,leeneia

I'm a gardener, so I've always enjoyed this song. My tomatoes are getting big, and we've had three harvestings of beans. How about you?

GARDENING
(Dillon Bustin)

Oh, my friends, it's springtime again.
Buds are swelling on every limb
Peepers do call. Small birds do sing.
My thoughts return to gardening.

Gardening is a very fine art.
Bear well in mind before you start.
Lay up your ax, your saw blade also,
And take down your spade, your rake, and your hoe.

Polish your hoe till the blade does shine.
Likewise your rake as you sharpen each tine.
Dress up your spade with a light coat of oil.
Then you are ready to prepare your soil.

Prepare your soil with a good free will.
Bear well in mind what you may till.
Some compost and lime are all that you need.
Then you are ready to plant your seed.

Plant your seed but none too soon.
Bear well in mind the phase of the moon.
Set out the fruits, the roots, and the grain,
And hope it all sprouts in the cool early rain.

If the cool early rain don't drown you out,
The first hot spell will bring on a drought.
The midsummer sun is hotter than hell,
So mulch down your rows and water them well.

Water them well and thin them also.
Beware of weeds and beetles and crows.
If you work every day and little is lost,
Just hope it all ripens before the first frost.

Frost will come, as sure as sin.
Then you must hasten to gather it in,
By cartloads and bushels, by pecks and by quarts,
Your harvest of fruits and grains of all sorts.

All sorts of peaches and apples and wheat,
Oats and rye and strawberries sweet,
Squashes and melons with colorful rinds,
Your harvest of vegetable roots of all kinds.

All kinds of turnips and carrots and beets,
Potatoes, tomatoes, and strong-smelling leeks,
Cabbage and corn, the beans, and the hay.
Then you must carefully store it away.

Away in the cellars and lofts and bins,
Make cider and kraut, pickles and gin.
If you do it all well, then you'll not go wrong.
You will have plenty all winter long.

All winter long while the cold winds blow,
Take down your saw and a-woodcutting go.
If you're well fed and warm, be well content then,
Till warm weather comes and you say to your friends,

"Oh, my friends, it's springtime again.
Buds are swelling on every limb.
Peepers do call. Small birds do sing.
My thoughts return to gardening."
Gardening!

Thank you so much for the lyrics, Leeneia! I forgot how lengthy this song is; it seems to go by so fast when it's sung. I had no idea it was one of Dillon Bustin's, either.

I hate to admit it, but aside from rosemary, African blue basil and an accidental pumpkin, I don't have anything planted this year. Sigh. I had some pretty intense abdominal surgery and couldn't dig all spring . . . also I wouldn't have been strong enough to fight off the deer with sticks.

But NEXT year, just stand back and watch for an explosion of green! I am determined to get it done. This song will surely help.

Claire

I see that I typed "1893" on the lyrics above. That's probably a type; don't rely on it.
