Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kingston trio , who´s gonna be her man From: GUEST,Wayne Monroe Date: 28 Oct 05 - 07:38 PM The song is "Who's Gonna Hold Her Hand" from the STRING ALONG album. I watched that big white boat go down, sailing to the sea. And every time that wheel went around she was farther away from me. She sailed away to another town, I'll never understand; she walked the streets in a yellow gown singing who's gonna be my man. (chorus) Who's gonna hold her hand, who's gonna hold her hand? Who's gonna be her man tonight, who's gonna hold her hand? and so on; I think there are two more verses. Nice song in 3/4 time. |

Subject: Lyr Add: WHO'S GONNA HOLD HER HAND (Kingston Trio) From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Oct 05 - 03:39 PM I have a book called Kingston Trio: 50 Folk song Favorites. Here's what's in the book. -Joe Offer- WHO'S GONNA HOLD HER HAND (Bob Shane & Tom Drake, 1960) I watched that big white moon* go down, Sailing to the sea, (the sea) And every time that wheel went around, She was farther away from me. She sailed away to another town, I'll never understand. She walked the streets in a yellow gown, Singing, "Who's gonna be my man?" CHORUS: Who's gonna hold her hand? Who's gonna hold her hand? Whe's gonna be her man tonight? Who's gonna hold her hand? I used to walk by the riverside, Lonesome as I could be, (could be) Hoping the boat would come sailing in, Bringing her back to me. Sometimes I think my world will end And I'll have no place to hide. To cry the tears she left with me, And the lonely feeling inside. [Chorus] Is this a version of an earlier song, or is it a Kingston Trio original? *SINSULL and I hear "boat go down" |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kingston trio , who´s gonna be her man From: SINSULL Date: 29 Oct 05 - 05:22 PM No, I don't see it. And isn't it "big white boat"? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kingston trio , who´s gonna be her ma From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Oct 05 - 09:44 PM I think I'd agree with MissouriMud that I hear a tie to one version of "Who's Going to Shoe Your Pretty Little Foot." And now that I've listened to it, I agree with SINSULL about "boat" in the first line. It does say "moon" in the songbook though.
Who's gonna glove your hand? Who's gonna kiss your red ruby lips, Who's gonna be your man? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kingston trio , who´s gonna be her ma From: Janie Date: 29 Oct 05 - 10:54 PM Kingston Trio Lyrics I think has all their lyrics. It says 'boat' and boat is what makes sense in the context of the song. I too think it is a derivative of "Who's...pretty little foot." Janie |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kingston trio , who´s gonna be her man From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 30 Oct 05 - 06:06 PM I find the words rather abject, but the tune is a pretty one to play on my dulcimer. We had the Kingston Trio album with this song on when I was in high school. At the time, I thought the male character seemed to wear his heart too much on his sleeve. Later, the we had a Beatles album that carried the theme even further: Oh, darling, if you leave me I'll never make it alone! Believe me when I tell you, I'll never make it alone. Ladies, believe me when I tell you, if a guy sounds as helpless and desperate as either of these two, run, do not walk, for the nearest exit. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kingston trio , who´s gonna be her man From: GUEST,Wayne Monroe Date: 30 Oct 05 - 11:21 PM Bob Shane did the solo on this song, evidently one of several songs that Tom Drake brought to the Trio. |
