Subject: RE: BS: The Dave thread From: GUEST,van lingle Date: 26 Mar 05 - 09:52 AM Another Dave checking in here. D.W. I don't like Davey and when friends in the past have used it, albeit in a friendly manner, I've broken them of the habit by immediately attaching a -y to their given name (Petey, Mikey, Patty etc.). Once worked on carpentry crew where 5 out of 6 were Daves. Very confusing. vl (Dave) |
Subject: RE: BS: The Dave thread From: Dave'sWife Date: 26 Mar 05 - 08:20 AM Once upon a few years ago, some women at my Husband's office insisted on calling him "Davey" all the time, which really ticked him off. He made some sort of general announcement that his name was "DAVID" and now everyone's afraid to call him Dave. He didn't object to 'Dave', just 'Davey' and not by everyone, just these women who were being overly familiar. How do the rest of you Daves feel about 'Davey'? I never call my husband 'Davey'. To my mind, thats the exclusive right of his parents and older siblings I call him DAVE. For some weird reason, everyone calls his father SPIKE to his face but when they list him online for some reason, its back to 'Dave' again. And about the Daffyds - Isnt that just a touch too twee? I knew a guy, an SCA fellow, who changed the spelling of his name from David to Daffyd and people are still snickering behind his back. He wanted to be more 'Celtic'. Ah well. A shame he didn't try for an actual 'celtic' name. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Dave thread From: GUEST,Skipy Date: 25 Mar 05 - 08:20 PM I am within the family caled "David" not "Dave" this because my wife's sister is married to a "Dave", so this keeps it simple. P.S. & I prefer it this way - so all you folkies who have refered to me as :- Dave Guest, for the past 34 years (time since burning bush convertion to Folk) please note I prefer to be called "David"! Skipy. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Dave thread From: Layah Date: 25 Mar 05 - 01:06 PM My dad's name is Dave Barry, and there's also a humor columnist named Dave Barry who is not my dad. I had a boyfriend named Dave but I always called him David because it was just too weird to call him the same name as people call my dad. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Dave thread From: Gurney Date: 24 Mar 05 - 09:05 PM Dave is a sexist name. If you were politically correct you would have a non-gender-specific diminutive of your christian/given/fore name like..... Chris. Shame on your parents. (Or Sue, if you like country songs) |
Subject: RE: BS: The Dave thread From: Azizi Date: 24 Mar 05 - 07:09 PM "Delvin is an Irish form of Dave? You mean Devlin?" Correction and Thread drift: Delvin was a typo. Sorry. But this caused me to go back and look up the name 'Devlin' in the multiple name books I own. {Name origin/meanings are another interest of mine and at last count I had 21 name books} One book on surnames I recently received from Mudcatter Hollowfox! Thanks again for this excellent resource!! The problem with name books is that they all don't agree about the origins/meanings of certain names. If 'Devlin' {DEHV-lin} is listed in these name books, it usually is given an Irish/Gaelic origin, but usually is given the meaning: 'courageous';{some variants of 'Devlin' are 'Dev'; 'Devland', 'Devlen'; 'Devlyn'} 'Devin' {DEH-vin} is a whole 'nuther personal name from Latin/French origin and meaning either 'Heavenly' or the name of an English county. {some variants are 'Devinn','Devyn' and 'Devon'} I share name meanings with children & youth [and their parents] to help develop and reinforce self-esteem. Consequently, I have used the name origin and meaning of 'David' for 'Davon' {day-vaughn}{'Davonte', 'Devon' etc} rather than the "Heavenly' meaning... 'Beloved' seems to have less of a wimp factor for urban young males who I interact with than 'Heavenly'. 'Courageous' is even better, but I think that would be stretching the meaning of 'Davon' etc. too much.. And now back to the DAVES!! have I mention that I know a female name 'Davida?' No? Well, I know a female name 'Davida'. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Dave thread From: Ebbie Date: 24 Mar 05 - 06:25 PM My first real boyfriend was named Dave. I have known many Daves since, and it is my impression that dave-hood tends to bring with it a charismatic but tumultuous life replete with two-timing relationships, mental oddities, inability to follow through on projects and many clashes with the law. Is that painting with a broad enough brush? ?;~) |
