Thanks Boab. I think I understand the "It's half of the gaelic word for drum" part, but I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "In english you'd say "an 'um'"

Is it a reference to dropping the 'dr' part of 'drum'?

After my recent experience of holding and comforting my mother while she was dying a very difficult death, I have learned something about what happens to survivors who go through such an experience.

I think I want my final moments to be whatever would be the least traumatic for my loved ones.

Micky 191, I am also sorry for your loss.

Since I was 16 I've wanted to be atop the Jungfrau (Alps) and to share the view with my love. On a certain Sunday 6 years ago my husband & I saw a travelog on it, and the decision was made. We would go! The next day he was killed by a drunk driver. Only reason for this story is to tell anyone & everyone not to put off your heart's desire. Do it now-whatever it is. Go to Ireland or France or wherever your dreams have taken you. We can't count on tomorrow. Confucius said, "We grow old too soon & smart too late." The old guy knew what he was talking about. BobP... I agree with you - NO MORE public debate. However, you did miss my main point... A well regulated militia was used in Germany from 1933 to 1939 to disarm the real militia and, just a few days ago, on a smaller scale, a man was shot dead defending his home and family.

Please feel free to PM me if you want to discuss it further. HOWEVER, I really don't want to.

My apologies for raising the blood pressure of all concerned.

Never again will this subject appear in my posts to the Mudcat.

Hi gnu,

I read your post.

I respect nearly all opinions on nearly everthing.

I admit having not checked for gun control threads at this forum. That's cause I only intend to communicate over this medium on music related topics.

This will be the only post you'll see from me on this subject unless someone brings it up.

I have strong notions regarding what Madison wrote, and I think he was crystal clear.

You may join with those who wish to overthrow the 2nd amendment and return to the days of Wild Bill; I won't be part of that.

I have no intention of listening to, or commenting on Heston or the Bradybillers. They just talk while guns go bang and nothing gets resolved, except to go on talking for which each side gets paid big bucks). But, as long as it remains an essential element (bill of rights) of the supreme law of the U. S., I will try to get folks to read James' very plain language. "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security mof a free state . . . (I trust you know the rest).

I could PM you the long version that I send whenever the issue gets me riled, but in a nutshell its says:

If you want the constituional right to carry a gun, go and join a well regulated militia.

If you belong to a well regulated militia, the federal government cannot demand that you surrender your weapon.

If you do not wish to join a militia, you have no legal protection to keep your weapon. By the same logic as, "you can't keep chickens", if the people pass the laws "you can't keep guns".

The only issues to decide are:
- What constitutes a "regulated militia"
- What constitutes a "militia".

It is my belief that if you keep the debaters within those parameters you can make real progress toward a less violent society.

I this country, the USA, a militia is a citizens army. A volunteer group whose leaders are responsible to the citizenry from which they draw their power.

And to whom they are responsible to carry out whatever laws passed by those citizens constitute "well regulated".

For example: Robert E. Lee quit the national army to lead a militia (Army of Northern Virginia) and fight against an invasion by the national government. Later, that same army, on numerous occasions, fought alongside the national government in conflicts when Virginians deemed that a threat existed.

I know full well that the national guard has been misused many times to hurt people when the threat didn't warrant the actions taken (Kent State). But remember, whenever people lose control of the contract they have with their government, what follows is facism.

I'm certain Kent State proved that; the problem is, did we pay attention?

Ben Franklin commented that the constitution gave us a republican form of government (in the greek sense) and was a precious gift (liberty) that we must diligently guard if we intend to keep it.

That's the short version.

PM me if there are points that need further clarification.

On a music-related note (finally back to where we belong); "Robin and Linda Williams And Their Fine Group" do a wonderful tune called "Men with Guns" that sums up perfectly, my personal attitude on the issue.

I think I could die now and be content except I would miss stuff. Stuff like grass, swans, clouds, Honey, my children....
Well, being non-religious, I guess actually, I wouldn't, but, it's the only thing that keeps me wanting to be alive.

There is one thing I'd like to see before I die though...

THAT THE REDSOCKS WOULD WIN THE WORLD SERIES!!!

That would make me really happy.

Other than that, I'm content.

BobP said...- A sane interpretation of the 2nd ammendment

I don't want to start a debate, but after reading SO many posts that support SANE gun legislation, I HAVE to make just this ONE comment, and then I will shut up....

Bob, we just had ANOTHER home invasion in the Maritimes. This time, a 34 year old occupant is dead from a gunshot wound.

I only have a fifty percent chance of being right on this, but I'll bet that when his home was invaded by criminals who see our recent SANE Canadian gun laws as a cause for celebration and he was looking down the barrel of that gun, he might have disagreed with some of the "sane" arguements offerred by those who would disallow law abiding citizens the right to defend their homes and families.

As per our recent laws...My gun is locked up solid. My ammunition is locked up separately and solid. I have obtained my Possession & Aquisition Certificate. I am (reasonably) sane. Everything is ready for my home to be invaded by criminals and the government both. You can probably guess which group I most fear.

BTW, don't tell me that the anti-gun lobby doesn't want to confiscate ALL guns. Tell that to the Aussies and the Brits and see how far you get. Better yet, tell it to the six million plus people exterminated during WWII.

God bless America - last land left of the free and last home left of the brave.

I especially liked the Southern Cross thing (I hear it's
awe inspiring, even for the "not-very-religious set)
and I'd have to go along with "own your own boat".

Heres my list:
- Family healthy, and not wanting
- Perhaps leave them a li'l dough, but not too much
- Peace, I mean real peace for a whole, free Ireland
- An invention that renders nuclear weapons useless
- A sane plan adopted for disposing nuclear waste
- A sane interpretation of the 2nd ammendment
- All kids taught M L King's "I have a dream" speech
- Song circles abounding throughout the land
- Kids taught Foster, Ledbetter & Guthrie
- Catters chosen to pick nat. anthems for everywhere

Tito said he is well-trained and would know what to do in the event of an emergency, such as a fire. "If a fire were to occur and the rest of the astronauts were disabled, I would know exactly what to do, how to put out the fire, how to locate it and how to deal with my own breathing," he said.

Yup, breathe slowly, buddy, because a taxi home might take a while.

For those of you eager to join me in space:
U.S. Space Tourist Ready for Flight Reuters Mar 23 2001 12:05AM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. millionaire with a ticket to ride aboard the Russian Soyuz spaceship said on Thursday he is well-trained and ready for his planned $20 million flight next month to the International Space Station. American investment manager Dennis Tito, who will become the first tourist in space, said in an television interview he has had eight months of cosmonaut training, is in excellent health and well-prepared to hold his own with the professional astronauts.

In an appearance on CNN's "Larry King Live," Tito acknowledged that NASA and other space station partners are concerned that a nonprofessional could be a distraction as the crew executes complicated operations.

Tito said he is well-trained and would know what to do in the event of an emergency, such as a fire. "If a fire were to occur and the rest of the astronauts were disabled, I would know exactly what to do, how to put out the fire, how to locate it and how to deal with my own breathing," he said.

The 60-year-old would-be cosmonaut, who paid the Russians for a seat on Soyuz, also said he has had a lot of training in weightlessness and can put on a spacesuit in 25 seconds.

"I feel like I'm ready, I'm well trained," he added.

If the flight goes as planned, Tito said he will be more than a tourist on the upcoming Soyuz mission set for April 30.

"I have some duties on the launch vehicle. I will assist the commander as he instructs me," Tito explained. He added: "I've had a lot of systems training. I actually could operate a lot of the systems on the space station itself."

Tito, a former NASA employee, said he does not understand why the U.S. space agency is concerned about having a civilian aboard the space station. He said with shuttle flights now routine, his journey would be a great opportunity for NASA to get Americans excited about the space station.

"Being able to see space through the eyes of an ordinary civilian is an intriguing idea," Tito said in the interview.

In a separate CNN interview, a NASA official said now was not the right time for Tito to visit the space station because of the heavy work schedule. And there's the matter of ensuring the safety of an inadequately trained civilian, said William Readdy, a former astronaut and NASA's chief of space flight.

"If there would be anything off nominal, any kind of emergency, the crew up there, quite frankly, would not be able to accommodate a nonprofessional," he said.

Readdy noted that Tito was initially supposed to fly aboard the aging Russian space station Mir. But Mir was deemed unsafe and was being brought down to Earth on Friday.

Oh how I envy him.
