Bellowhead disappointing? Well, maybe you mean that the material isn't groundbreaking. In that sense, I'd agree; the tracks on E.P.ONYMOUS are re-arrangements of well-known Spiers & Boden mainstays of the past couple of years or so and all have been previously recorded - by them and by many others before

But it is, surely, the arrangements that are the point. It's now possible to distinguish exactly what is going on in Jon Boden's complex musical patterns and hear just where this band is taking our music: yes English music is joining the world.

A live performance is something else. Bellowhead's debut last April in Oxford was so triumphant and unbelievable that I've found it impossible to find sufficiently ecstatic words to convey to those who were unfortunate enough not to have been part of the exuberant explosion in Oxford Town Hall, just how important this was. 'Cotswold' was previously just a kind of cheese to many of those unable to resist leaping up and following the lead of a few Morris Offspring up and down the hallowed aisles of local government. As the latest fRoots cover proudly announces:

Morris dancing is 'cool' shock!

I guess I could put those on the site too! There are loads in another thread sowmwhere round here I seem to recall...

I have submitted the URL to google so hopefully it'll be able to find it in the near future. BTW if anyone has trouble with the speed the site loads etc can they let me know...as it gets bigger I may need to review the hosting arrangements...

Nice site indeed (will be when it's finished... no, a web site is never finished) and Jess's link looks perfectly ok and works for me.

"webmistress" it says at the bottom of the page - nice one!

Taking a swerve off topic for a second, am I alone in finding Bellowhead a little dissapointing? I didn't see the gig at Sidmouth, so maybe its better live, but all the tracks played on CaF so far have been distinctly underwhelming.

Its not that I don't like it, its just that I like other stuff thats new at the moment much more. Also, I'm not suggesting you shouldn't play it (on the contrary, play it more), I just don't understand why everyone seems to be holding above everything else at the moment.

Am I in a minority of one?

No Roses was released as a CD by Mooncrest Records Ltd, Twyman House, 31-39 Camden Road, London NW1 9EF. The catalogue number is CRESTCD 011. What looks like an ISBN (?) number is 5 014438 801127

Don't write off us old farts you young upstart, or I'll come round and give you a whipping with my walking stick!

The PBoEFS is on Fellside FECD47. It has contributions from Linda Adams, Martin Carthy, John Bowden, Roy Harris and, of course, Jez Lowe. Your malaise has left you low. The Grey Cock thing is just a bit of a laugh from another message board in response to the clueless moderation. Get well soon Chris!

If you are desperate for No Roses, I suppose, mutter, mutter, I could lend you mine, but I will be waiting for you outside the studio, just in case you get any ideas!

Keep up the good work guys. You are a beacon of light; another programme can't even get the matches lit. So, to make it easy for an old git like me, will you other presenters/listeners give me some links to the regional programmes that carry the beacon too.

..at this rate we'll need more than an hour a week...!

Website: Basically I've got something up there as quickly as possible (in the way I have of throwing myself in the deep end, I have never designed a website in my life before!) and hope to build on it from there. I think it needs some photos and graphics because I feel it's a bit flat at the moemnt, however I don't want to get into trouble with copyright stuff...!. So expect it to grow (slowly-ish, and probably a lot more over christmas!) from now on....

I'm going to lock Chris in the studio/shed and MAKE him write some stuff....haaaaaarr...

Hi guys,

Don't mind you going slightly off topic, especially as it's caused a flurry of interest in the thread! It just happens that I was planning to play something by Anahata and Mary Humphries next week anyway (not to say that blatent hints aren't a good idea, I'm always open to requests, even for your own stuff!). And of course we've already played three BELLOWhead tracks, and plan to get the other two in in the next few weeks, seeing as a) it was an exclusive and b) it's so damn good!

Sadly I haven't got a copy of 'No Roses', it's on the wishlist! It's on Topic isn't it? They've been good for sending me new releases (should have the new Martin Carthy and Bob Davenport's coming soon!) but haven't sounded too keen on sending me back catelogue. I'll mention it again at an opportune moment!

As for Ashley Hutchings, I tend to think of him as a great innovator and leader rather than a particularly notable musicians or songwriter in his own right. Early Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and Albion Band were all brilliant, but I always felt the brightest talents were the other members such as Richard Thompson, Dave Swarbrick and Sandy Denny in Fairport, Martin Carthy and Maddy Prior in Steeleye, John Tams in the Albion Band etc.

I get the impression he's gone a bit worn out and sentimental of late. Patchy is my verdict! I remember Grandson of Morris On instead of the John McCusker Band at Sidmouth one year and being bitterly disappointed. There were a few good moments but it needed some serious quality control, and reports from the John McCusker Band were great. I made a vow to stick with the fresh talent over the old farts from then on. Thank the lord I saw BELLOWhead over Steeleye Span this year.

Talking of Fairport, I'm hoping to get the live Richard Thompson-sung version of Matty Groves off House Full into next weeks show, got some great Swarb fiddling in there.

Don't have the Penguin Book of English Folk Songs (where do I blag a copy of that?!), what else is in it? I played a track by Fernhill the other day called 'Grey Cock' but I think it was more of an amalgam of several different songs. Don't have the Jez Lowe version.

Finally, I got an email offering me the New Scorpion Band album, and replied with my address, but haven't heard anything since.

So has anyone been to our new website, www.coolasfolk.co.uk
? It's got all our playlists on it if you're wondering where this week's one is. What do you think? It's still under construction but I think it's looking great. Thanks to Fee who has done it all without a jot of help from me.

Right, that's all, Chris

To continue just for a moment the mild thread drift, Rachel McShane is another folk cellist in Bellowhead. And Barry Dransfield used to play it too, but he put a strap on it and played standing up.

Anahata's cello playing is wonderfully expressive and I hope to be hearing it soon on Cool as Folk (to return to topic). One of my favourite tracks from Sharp Practice with Mary is Barbara Allen during which the instrument really does speak. He can also be heard to brilliant effect on Patterson Jordan Dipper's Flat Earth CD which is something else I'm hoping to hear played soon (more hints...)

Fee, Chris

Here's something else to chew over. What about the hurdy gurdy playing of Francis Baines on "The Murder of Maria Marten", from the album No Roses by Shirley Collins and the Albion Country Band? In fact, let's not stop there, is Shirley Collins any good, has Ashley gone off the rails since then (was he ever on them?)? Who plays the best fiddle on the track, Barry Dransfield or Nic Jones? Oo, I can't wait for fur and feathers! Which reminds me, a tribute to Swarb!

BTW, I'm looking forward to the day you play something from the Penguin Book of English Folk Songs. How about "The Grey Cock" by Jez Lowe?

Er.... I'm in Cambridgeshire, close to Suffolk and Norfolk borders.
How do you know I'm a cellist?

Chris already has two CDs from Mary Humphreys and me, with many songs accompanied by cello or, most frequently, cello and banjo. I'm waiting for him to play something from one of them. (hint)

You can find out about the albums HERE

Sorry for continuing the hijack... Claire, if you're planning to stick around get yourself a proper mudcat login. It only takes about 30 seconds and costs you only your soul and a pint of blood. The I could have sent you a PM (provate message) and we woudln't be cluttering up Chris's thread.

OK, end of interruption, normal service resumingm please do not adjust your set...

Chris... can you play some folk cello? Alistair Fraser and Natalie Haas have just made a cracking album.

Hi all,

Hope you enjoy the show. I was slightly on my death bed, so sorry if I'm lacking some of my normal enthusiasm! Also apologies to Random Noises listeners, I was actually locked out of the studio for the first half hour (it was that kind of day!), so you'll need to listen to half an hour of Jukebox Junction, our sustainer programme, before I come on.

And Fee, I have to disagree with you about Julie Murphy and Nigel Eaton's 'Sylvie', it's yet another fantastic track off the best album I've heard since Linda Thompson's Fashionably Late! Let's play it next week so people can decide! In fact I think a Nigel Eaton floor spot is on order :)

Hi Lizzie...
sticks this week...I don't dance (though I fear it may be only a matter of time!!) but try to play (emphasis on TRY) along with the rest of the musos...it's really quite difficult when you can't hear yourself...

Peter...Sylvie is a fantastic song (I like it more than the trad. version, coincidentally was just listening to Carthy/Swarbrick version in the car). But I have to say I find JM is a bit drowned by the hurdy gurdy unfortuantely, hence you can't hear the lovely singing quite so well!!.

This weeks playlist coming up....shortly...

Personally I think I might not live to see the morning after this concert, as the excitement will be just TOO much! But WHAT a way to go! :-)

Big Session on the TV! Big Session on the Radio! Big Session EVERYWHERE! Can't wait for Vol II to come out!

Anyway, better go and talk to my family again before they forget who I am! :-) Hope you enjoy your evening dancing with all those Morris boysies/girlies/persons! Ah The Bells! The Bells!

Never mind! Will keep persevering! Hope tonight's show goes OK. Thought Hillary had a beautiful voice by the way! Who are you playing tonight I wonder?

What torture to have a Show of Hands fan AND an Oysterband fan with his very OWN show and I can't hear it! Grump! Grump! Grump!

Chris, PLEASE play something from The Big Session! At least I can imagine that!! :-) :-)

Hello Fee..... to be honest I haven't got a clue WHAT I'm on! :-) although there might be a few people on this board who'd offer up a few suggestions! (Not ALL of them good!) ;-)

But I'm assured by 'He who ought to know better!' that I'm on dial up! I just press buttons and things happen! That's all I understand about computers, ABSOLUTE MAGIC!! Spoke to someone in Canada the other day.....Wow!! Almost as magical as Reading!!!

Anyway, will keep trying all sorts of different buttons and gadgets until something happens......!

Ouch! A Hurdy-Gurdy......Watch out! Here comes the Hurdy-Gurdy Man and he's singing songs of love......Good Lord! Not Donovan surely? He was always such a gentle person.....he can't be up to mischief in Larkrise Cluedo on Junction 11.....No! Lizzie...are you on broadband or dial up?. I know is almost impossible to listen via dialup because the connection's too slow. you could try a different player (as above, I can't play it through Real but can thru Windows Player).

If you're experiencing a buzzing noise on playback then that's normal (unfortunately)...we seem to have some sort of feedback problem on the desk...it happens on everyone's show.

Like the last paragraph Peter, very good! ......My goodness, a Uniform Resource Locater! Eeek, that sounds a bit dodgy to me! No wonder I don't have one! :-)

And WHAT is a doo-dah.com??!! I'm not going there! I've been warned about sites like that! :-) :-) :-)

So you'll have to keep us up to date over on Radio 2 then, as to how things are going with Chris and Fee's show! Sounds brilliant to me. Will keep 'trying' to listen in as well!

You see, isn't it JUST my luck, that FINALLY two people with really good taste start up a radio programme and I can't hear it!!!!! Grrrr....All those Show of Hands songs and all those Oysters, all over the airwaves and I can't access them! Nope, I'm going to have to camp out at Junction 11 every Tuesday, it's the only answer!! :-)

Now then.........Larkrise Cluedo on Junction 11!

Ahem Lizzie

Yor URL is a Uniform Resource Locater. An http://doo_dah.com which in this case would be http://www.1287am.com

Fuzzy, echoey. Nah, but there is a big buzz about this programme! Let me put it this way, quality programme, crap sound. THAT OTHER HOUR THAT WE WON'T MENTION, quality sound, crap programme.

Sidmouth eh? When I was young, I might have considered it, but now it's not likely unless the tide is turning, but I guess it is a place which is bonny at morn for a gipsy girl, or even a princess royal, but poor drowsy Maggie, she might just catch the sunset.

I even tried 'Guest's' advice above, but I've searched all over and can't find my 'url' ANYWHERE!! Nope! Haven't got one, so am unable to point it in your direction! :-) :-)

Shall just have to read your playlist and use my imagination!
Still think I'd enjoy it though!

CET - Fee from the show here...I have had the same problem with Real Player...so I changed over to Windows Media player (chose it as the default player), through which it plays OK, perhaps worth trying it the other way round for you?. I'm not techy (am only just learning to work the desk in the studio!) but it might be worth a try. It would be lovely to have a listener in Canada!. If you still have trouble let us know and I'll see what I can find out for you...

Lizzie - Glad you like the show when you haven't even heard it yet!The Larkrise Ranter will make themselves know if they want to I'm sure...we like a bit of mystery...;o).

Breezy - We'll do our best to mention stuff, however, we seem to find ourselves running out of time every week!. If there's no-one in after us we do sometimes overrun, but you only get the hour on 'listen back'.

The website: www.coolasfolk.co.uk (expected launch date either this afternoon or the weekend) will have a page for details of regular sessions and gigs...or that's what I'm planning anyway...

Cheers

Dear Chris,

Haven't yet heard the show but I LOVE it already!! :-)

Am making plans to move up to Reading as I type! This will prove very handy as I can visit my best friend whilst also listening to the New and Mind-Blowingly Brilliant Cool as Folk Programme!!

Ohhhhhh! Show of Hands!!!!! :-) :-) :-)....Kate Rusby! and John McCusker, Spiers & Boden and Phil Beer and Eliza and SETH, (Can that lad play!!!) and YOU played KITTY JAY by him as well! And Jim and Benji...oh has Benji been on yet? And Show of Hands and.........

I've just NEVER been so impressed with a programme I've NEVER heard!!
How do you do that! AND THE OYSTERBAND! Oh! It just gets better and better! I may even forgive you for having 'Alianza'!

Are you going to be recording NEXT years Sidmouth 2005? Show of Hands are on.......sigh! Kate was amazing there last year. Lovely lady, great voice, great sense of humour! And those Oysters!!!

You seem to be keeping EVERYONE happy! Haven't read one negative post!

Please could you take over my Country and run it properly as I think that at last we have found a man who knows what he is doing!!
And I rather think it's time we had a Prime Minister with Dreadlocks and Green Trousers and Fee could be First Lady of Folk! :-)

Please also remember that after you've taken over Downing Street you'll have to take over the BBC and open the Folk Floodgates!!
Will try to 'listen again' tomorrow as my eyes are crossing now and have to sleep!

Wishing You and Fee Loads of Luck!

Lizzie :-)

Well once again, I thought you showed them BIG BOYZ how it should be done - except, I'm beginning to think that Whapweasel have only one tune in their repertoire; surely not, play us another one! Hearing Jake Thackray brought back memories. I remember seeing him in Bristol clubs about 30 years ago; both funny and poignant. A talented chap indeed. That track by Cilla Fisher was great, more please. And finally, I thought the interview with Hilary was really interesting. I checked out her web site afterwards. What an amazing instrument that mando bass is!

Looking forward to next week.

Hey guys,

Hope you enjoyed the show this week. As Fee said this was the first time we have had an interview so it was quite exciting. Make sure you listen in for a chance to win a copy of Hilary's new album, which is dead good.

There's a few errors to Fee's playlist, a think a product of bad handwriting and the fact we were using three different people's albums! So here's a corrected one:

Whapweasel – The Final Last Banana/Sleeve in the Cheese
from Relentless (Whapweasel)

FLOOR SPOT: Hilary James with Simon Mayor – Newcastle
from Laughing with the Moon (Acoustics)

Jake Thackray – Old Molly Metcalfe
from The Best of Jake Thackray (EMI Gold)

Cilla Fisher – Blue Bleezin' Blind Drunk
from Cilla Fisher and Artie Trezise – Cilla and Artie (Greentrax)

FLOOR SPOT: Hilary James with Simon Mayor – Andrew Lammie
from Laughing with the Moon (Acoustics)

Chris Leslie with Beryl Marriott - Eighteenth century English dances
from The Gift (Beautiful Jo)

Phil Beer– The Fireman's Song
from Hard Hats (HTD)

FLOOR SPOT: Hilary James and Simon Mayor – The Parrot Song (live)
From In Short (Acoustics)

And for Random Noises:

Delays – Lost in a Melody; Catherine Campbell – Improvements for Winter; Camel – Pressure Points; Mark Lanegan Band with PJ Harvey- Hit The City; Jim White – Static on the Radio; Le Tigre - Viz; Hilary James - Shenandoah; Kasabian – Processed Beats; Nick Drake –Northern Sky; Jamelia - Stop; Colum Sands and Sharon Aviv – Going Down to the Well with Maggie/Two Jugs.

Although I wish Jamelia had a song called 'Shop'! :)

So lets hear some feedback again! It's understandable that now we're up and running we wont be getting as much, but it is both really useful to hear your comments and suggestions and reassuring to know that people are listening and enjoying the show. Post here or email folkontheradio@hotmail.com

And don't forget that comp!

Chris

Hi all...

Last night's show was our first with a special guest. Hilary James joined us in the studio to talk about her various musical projects. In a rather nice link for us, she ran Reading University Folk Society in the late 70's .

If you want to hear the show and our chat with Hilary then you can listen again on:

www.1287am.com

When you do, you'll have a chance to win a signed copy of Hilary James and Simon Mayor's new album 'Laughing with the Moon'; a mixture of traditional and original songs and tunes, including a Playford dance, Carolan's Concerto, heart-rending traditional ballads and lively reels. If you want to know the question you need to answer to win, then you'll need to listen!

This week's playlist:

Whapweasel – The Final Last Banana/Sleeve in the Cheese
from Relentless (Whapweasel)

FLOOR SPOT - Hilary James and Simon Mayor – Newcastle
From Laughing with the Moon (Acoustics)

Jake Thackeray – Old Molly Metcalfe
from The Best of Jake Thackeray (EMI Gold) - Chosen by Hilary

Cilla Fisher – Blue Blazin' Blind Drunk
from – Cilla and Artie (Greentrax)

FLOOR SPOT - Hilary James and Simon Mayor – Andrew Lammie
from Laughing with the Moon (Acoustics)

Beryl Marriott - 18th Century English Dances - Chosen by Hilary
(Album details, well, I need to find them out!)

Phil Beer– The Firemans Song
from Hard Hats (HTD)

FLOOR SPOT - Hilary James and Simon Mayor – The Parrot Song
From Gobble! Gobble! Gobble! (Acoustics)

'Random Noises' (9pm - 10pm), is also hosted by Chris, this is what he played this week:

Delays – Lost in a Melody; Catherine Campbell – Improvements for Winter; Camel – Pressure Points; Mark Lanegan Band with PJ Harvey- Hit The City; Jim White – Static on the Radio; Le Tigre - Viz; Hilary James - Shenandoah; Kasabian – Processed Beats; Nick Drake –Northern Sky; Jamelia - Shop; Colum Sands and Sharon Aviv – Going Down to the Well with Maggie/Two Jays.

AND FINALLY...at the end of this very long post:

I'm hoping we'll have our 'Cool as Folk' website up by the end of the week, The idea is we can put more info on there, links to the people playing the stuff we've played, to interesting and useful sites like this one :o), and let people know where they can buy the music, see gigs etc. I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

Fee

Hi guys,

I am thrilled to say that for tomorrow's show me and Fee will be joined by singer and multi-instrumentalist Hilary James. We'll play a few tracks from across her career and chat about her music, her new album 'Laughing with the Moon' and her role as head of the folk society at Reading Uni back in the seventies.

If you don't know Hilary's work, she is a fine singer who's work encompasses blues, bluegrass and children's song as well as folk song from Britian, Ireland and America. She performs with mandolinist Simon Mayor, both as a duo and as half of the Mandolinquents. Check out www.acousticsrecords.co.uk for more details.

As well as that we'll have the normal mixture of British folk music, I've got Phil Beer, Cilla Fisher and Kirsty McGee provisionally lined up.

If you haven't heard last weeks show yet, get listening, you've got till tomorrow night!

Cheers, Chris

Why thank you :o)...We've had loads of good feedback on the show this week!.

Technical wise, we know we still have a humming noise in the background and my mic. is very quiet (or I'm not talking loud enough) we are trying to sort both these problems out...
