Subject: Lyr Add: DOG (Tom Dundee, via Bryan Bowers)
From: saulgoldie
Date: 15 Feb 07 - 01:28 PM

Here is the song that open mike is refering to. Every time I have played it, everyone goes, "Aaaaawwwww." I am frankly surprised that it hasn't received more circulation. BTW, I obviously have it transcribed, and I would LOVE to have it included in the DT database. (I'll be in my office...)

DOG
Written by Tom Dundee
As recorded by Bryan Bowers on "By Heart"

The whole thing started 'cause it looked like fun
When other people had a dog; "I'm gonna get me one,"
I said, "Have a little friend around the place."
So I went to the pet store down the street
And lyin' in the middle of a canine heap
Was a sleepy little puppy with a quiet sort of a face.

The next few weeks were certainly strange
Between the barkin' and the thinkin' up of names
Old Blue he wasn't and Spot didn't really apply
So I settled for Harry, just because
That's how he is and that's how he was
And that's how the house gets more and more as days go by.

For a time I was careful where I sat
The rug got funky and he chewed up my hat
And it still happens once in a while when he gets mad
But it's been pretty even after all
I taught him what I know about playin' ball
And he's helped me get rid of a lot of stuff I used to have.

Sometimes friends drop by for a couple of beers
And we all sit around, take turns rubbin' his ears
And callin' him; it's been that way ever since he was a pup.
He sleeps on the bed and when I turn over,
He turns over, then I turn over,
Then he turns over, then I turn over, and we get up.

As my life keeps movin' through the different conditions
The big changes come with the slightest decisions
You're in for a surprise when you think you got it figured, I've found.
'Cause who ever thought I'd ever dote on a pet,
But lookin' back now, I always forget
How I filled up the time before my dog was around.

From: Scrump
Date: 15 Feb 07 - 08:27 AM

What about the one featuring all those dogs ?? Dido,Bendigo etc. ??

Or the Kipper Family's "Dido, Fido":

Well one morning last autumn I was walking my dogs
When the Duke of Wellington we did meet.
Well Bonzo and Rover, they slobbered him all over,
While Dido nearly knocked him off his feet.
Well there was....

CHORUS: Dido, Fido, Bonzo and Rex
Rover and Lassie and Spot
There was Butch, there was Candy
There was Patch and there was Sandy
These were the dogs what I had got.

Well don't worry sir I said, he won't hurt you
That's just his way of saying he like you a lot.
But he took my little dog, and he kicked him in the bog
And said that's my way of saying I do not.
There was....

Now the next dog being old, he was a trifle deaf
He couldn't hear a single word I said.
And so when I told him sit, he made an awful mess.
When I cleaned it up I shot the bugger dead.
That still left....

Now the next dog being daft, and not all the ticket
He made straight away for the river.
And there he did jump in, but the bugger couldn't swim
That's the last we saw of him forever.
There was....

They chased a rabbit o'er the plain, but that chased 'em back again
Which put my poor old dogs in quite a stew.
Now it's just 12 months today since I heard the squire say
"I should have them all put down, if I was you."
There was....

That's one of my all time favourites! It's around here somewhere... It's the sense of "My Melancholy Rabies" that appeals to me, I think.

p.s. The "other" Fields of Athenry , in the shortened version I use, is another good doggy song.

From: Herga Kitty

"Bess" by Steve Thomason:

Chorus - A better friend no man could have
No truer heart, no keener eye,
A better friend no man could have,
As the sun sets in the western sky.

I've had her since I was a boy
Since first I came onto the farm,
Her company has brought me joy,
Her courage kept me safe from harm

She's been with me on all my walks,
By rushing stream and bracken glen,
And listened close to all my talks,
And never disagreed with them.

And as we walked by moorland stream,
We watched the wild hare running by,
Relived those walks in all our dreams,
As skylarks sang in summer skies.

But now she lies close by the hearth,
No hares to chase, no skylarks fly,
She takes that one last lonely path,
As the sunlight fades from western skies.

"The Irish Rover" (and the poor dog was drowned...)

"The Dogger Bank" (Nothing to do with dogs)

"Sea Dog" (nothing to do with dogs)

"Bull Dog Don't Bite Me" (Barrouallie Whalers)

Cheerily,

Here's a link for Chicken In The Bread Tray {Auntie Will Your DOg Bite}

http://www.bluegrassmessengers.com/master/chickeninthebread.html

I found a fragment of that song in Dorothy Scarborough's 1925 book "On The Trail Of Negro Folk Songs" . Scaborough introduces this fragment by writing "Of course every Southerner knows:
Chickens in de bread tray
Scratchin' out de dough.
Grannie,will your dog bite?"
No, Chile, no!
Grannie,will your dog bite?"
No, Chile, no!"

-snip-

I found a more complete version of this song in Thomas W. Talley's 1922 book "Negro Folk Songs" :

"Auntie, will your dog bite"-
"No, Chile, No!"
Chicken in de bread tray'
A makin'up dough.

"Auntie will your broom hit?"-
"Yes, Child" pop!
Chicken in de bread tray;
"Flop! Flop! Flop!"

"Auntie, will yo' oven bake?"-
"Yes, Jes fry!"-
"What's dat chicken good frer?"-
"Pie! Pie! Pie!"

"Auntie, is yo' pie good?"
"Good as you could 'spec'".
Chicken in de bread tray;
"Peck! Peck! Peck!"

Here's the best I can do to recall the Pedigree ad that's made me cry every single time I've seen it. It was just on, again, and it ought to be a song. It's a short one, about 15 seconds, but it doesn't seem to go by fast.

All the camera shots are beautifully-shot closeups of expressive dogs' faces, one at a time, as they look up from their pens at a shelter with those intelligent, hopeful, wise eyes. Mutts, with that dignity so many of them have.

During the series of shots, the voiceover [a man speaking the dogs' thoughts]:

I know how to sit...., lie down...., and roll over.... .
I don't know what I'm doing here....
But I know that I am a Good Dog...,
And I just want to go home.

And then the Pedigree logo comes up and there's a brief reminder that with every purchase, they make a donation to support dog shelters.

That really ought to be a song.

~Susan

The Littlest Hobo (from the TV Canadian Series)

I find adventure everywhere,
And friends with whom I'd like to share.

This is my stop along the way.
Don't really know how long I'll stay.

Stop over. The world is my friend.
Stop over along the road without end.

Traveling around from town to town.
Sometimes I think I'll settle down.

But I know I'd hunger to be free.
Rovin' is the only life for me.

A-driftin'. The world is my friend.
I'm travelin' along the road without end.
