We used to call 'em 'savoury ducks' (US-ians please note the correct spelling of 'savoury'). 'Faggots' seems to be a southern-softie word for them, sithee maister!

Not a bad night last week. The Red Lion is a decent venue for sitting round and knocking out songs.

Our motley crew were;

Danny, The Rookery, Richard, Backwoodsman, Jill, The Late (but turned up early for once) Ian, Jonathan, Mick, Andy and Goff. Your truly as ever bringing up the rear. Apologies had been given from Jim (see above), Albert, Martin Carthy and Elvis.

Not much to add really. What else can I tell you?

Oh aye. I enjoyed a couple of faggots yesterday. I would have shared that snippet elsewhere but you know how it is these days.

Dear me, the cost of banjologists is creeping up. Many years ago when I booked Arizona Smoke Review, Bill Zorn only charged me our spare bed for the night and my ex wife's recipe for perfect mushy peas.

Mind you, Paul Downes and Phil Beer cost the rest of the profits on the night...

You don't have to wait till the summer Gerry. They take snow ploughs over Keadby Bridge, tha' knows.

Keep challenging us to come over to The Malt Shovel and one day, I'll convince the rookery to be chauffeur.

Yeah, a good night. Get some 13s on your liquorice stick and try again. My 12.5 jobbies aren't too bad, tried it earlier.

Sorry world, just carrying on a conversation from last night. If anyone can work out what we are on about, you win a Collings D2H. If you can't, you win a banjo I'm afraid.

Of course it was perfect. Which instrument did you forget to bring eh? 😱 I'll come clean. I was looking forward to having your frying pan accompany my baritone guitar on a song where I reckon they could (almost) compliment each other.

A near-on perfect night at The Red Lion last night, with just a dozen of us giving us all a decent chance to play a few songs and not much background noise or chat to interfere. The pub ran out of Speckled Hen though, so my headache is a little better than it would have been!

Yeah, a cracker..

We do seem to have grown out of the raised area at The Red Lion. It was nicely full and I noticed Jim turned up, thought he couldn't fit in and left again. We may need to build a stadium...

Any road. Wheatsheaf next Wednesday. Be there or be talked about.

Another excellent night was had by all this week, with another mixed bag of music. Dave Mitchell made it from Sheffield for the first time in a while and most of the regulars turned up, though Gary was flying solo!

A quiet night if truth be told. As very few of us were playing, it came back round fairly fast so an opportunity to polish off songs some of us don't normally bother with.

The pub was fairly quiet (away match for pool) so we "had the floor."

The rookery, Eric, Nigel eventually (once stoked up on beer) and yours truly started the night and eventually joined by Richard. Both other Ians supplied the audience, both being too miserable to sing. Whassisname from near me sat listening too, and one or two of the bar flies were saying they enjoyed a few of the songs.

There. A factual review without a single knob gag. Unlike the actual night....

(The rookery may be interested to know that two pints after he left, Nigel was admitting he preferred my guitar to his. Round one sorted.)

There was a time when we didn't call eleven players "quiet"....

I'll be back at the weekend with sticks of rock and my washing. Hopefully will have finished with the dolly tub by next Wednesday in time for the Wheatsheaf bash.

The travel guitar has had some hammer but can't wait to get back to a real one. Played someone's Taylor 912(?) last night in a bar. Better beer in The Red Lion I suppose. No banjos out here though.......

Not missing at all. In The JamBar in Tignes. The gaffer sits with his guitar playing all day and night whilst his missus runs the bar. I was jamming in the jam as it were the other night.

Have a good night. I'd fly in and join you but the VIP lounge at Sandtoft International Airport serves crap coffee. (Added to which, today's dump means the road up from Borg St Maurice is shut at the moment. Snowed in with just miles and miles of piste, great pubs cafes and restaurants...)

An entertaining but slightly raucous night yesterday at The Wheatsheaf. Just 6 of us and the pool room noise meant quiet retrospective songs were pointless, so we had a good sing around. Richard , Jim, John, Mike (for a while) Eric, Nigel (eventually) and young Chris (at the end) managed to play a varied repertoire including 3 Bowie tributes. It may not be folk but it was good fun.

What a great start to the year. A full house despite the absence of a few regulars. I think I counted 18 performers and half a dozen spectators. We really crammed them in , and of a remarkably high standard too! Thanks everybody and keep coming back! The gamut ran from Paul Robeson covers to Oasis covers, with a smattering of proper folk music and all sorts of stuff! The age range of the performers went from 16 to 85 and the alcohol intake from 0 to 5 pints (unless you know different?)

Yeah, I fully understand earlier on when the bar was packed that those near that end couldn't enjoy a night of music. A bit frustrating too that when Albert, Chris and Backwoodsman left, the bar emptied too, leaving us as the noisy end of the hotel!

It settled into a great night. On a very happy note, I really love how we seem to be encouraging younger people to get up in public and sing. Although, as we had two schoolgirls in the room, this meant that when I started singing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, I had a couple of err.. extra verses to try and get a laugh with, but at the last minute decided otherwise 😳
So.. Early contributions from Albert, Chris and Backwoodsman, followed by; Jim, Reg & Gary, squeezebox John, Goff, Danny, Jess, the rookery, Jill, Ian and Goff's granddaughter whose name inexcusably escapes me. Yours truly bringing up the rear.

More discussion in the beer break regarding the numbered Swiss bank account Squeezebox John mentioned a few posts up. John and I trying to find ways of spending and closing it whilst the rookery came up with suggestions of how to increase the balance. We'll be another Lehmans Brothers, mark my word.

Merry Chrimbo to all our subscribers and se'thee in the new year.

I did wonder, as I packed my guitar away, if it would improve later, but the throat was very sore and my head was aching fit to bust, so I reckon the early night I took was probably a good idea!

Glad it all went well in the end, hope to see you on 6/1/16.

Unfortunately Backwoodsman, Albert and Chris abandoned ship about 9 and by ten past all the rowdies at the bar disappeared (to the Khyber) and we ended up with the best night of the year and finished at 12.30! Everyone was on form and we genuinely had a wonderful time!(and some excellent cake!- thanks Cath)) The next club is back at the Red Lion on 6th January. Have a great break and see you next year. Apologies for baling out early. Full of cold, and trying to sing over the mob who were bellowing at each othe by the bar was hurting my throat. Also I couldn't hear others singing (even the young lady with the nice voice who was sitting next to me), so there didn't seem much point in hanging around.

I'm sure it'll be better after New Year.

Well, a well formed group of performers and a rather packed pub.

The beer wasn't quite as free. Mr Carthy obviously didn't get my message. The banjo remained unclaimed.

On the positive side..

The rookery regailed us with banjo and a Martin copy guitar, Danny had a couple of new songs including a festive one, Goff played an excellent collection including a bit of trad, which went down well, Richard showed that a Uke can be heard in a crowded pub and gave us some lovely songs we could join in with, Jim played some haunting melodies including a couple of reels I didn't know and the obligatory horn pipe on his pipes, Nigel and Eric sang a few together having nicked the rookery's guitar and yours truly brought up the rear. (Rumours of me playing banjo will attract the attention of my legal team.)

A nice night all told. Money and a guitar changed hands and I got yacking with the gaffer and some neighbours till the wee hours.

Se'thee at The Red Lion at Ep'th next Wednesday.

(Gerry. Not sure about Sunday at The Shovel. I'd love to make the effort but depends what time we get back. If Mrs Musket drives when we go out in the day to see friends, I won't be able to in the evening. If I drive then I can drive that night. We'll see.)
