Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: GUEST,JHW (regular really) Date: 25 Jul 16 - 05:03 AM Printed maps but its too complicated. I've been to Leeds before. |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: GUEST,JHW Date: 25 Jul 16 - 04:48 AM Good job I chanced to go on Mudcat. Had a quarter of an idea I might come. The Britannia in Darlo will be too hot for me. I'll look up the venue location - but if its in town I'll not try. |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 24 Jul 16 - 06:05 AM Refresh - it's this Tuesday coming! Really looking forward to our second session at the Garden Gate. Come all ye ... Cheers! |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 20 Jul 16 - 05:03 PM Just to confirm that there's still no prospect of the Black Bull reopening, so next Tuesday's session will again be held at the wonderful Garden Gate in Hunslet. Let's hope for better weather and a good turnout; it would be nice to see it take off and raise the rafters! |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 04 Jul 16 - 07:37 AM It appears from some responses received that the new venue is not as convenient for all. It's still quite a distance for me too - but... It is a good (separate) room in a good hostelry, with a closeable door and good acoustics - and the management is supportive. All of which counts for quite a lot in this day and age. So, in the absence of any better options, for the time being the session will continue to be held at the Garden Gate. I'll keep you informed of any developments or changes. |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 01 Jul 16 - 09:10 AM For those interested, the first session at our new venue (The Garden Gate in Hunslet) was most encouraging. A smaller turnout than expected, quite possibly due to the atrocious weather (a very rainy night indeed), but this was made up for by the friendly atmosphere and select attendance. The venue is very accommodating, the room itself is good for singing, and those present approved of the venue, so (unless we get any good news re the Black Bull reopening!) the plan is to use the new venue again for July's session (on 26th). Hope to see you there, Dennis - as well as others who were unable to make June's session. |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 25 Jun 16 - 07:57 AM Refresh - our next meeting is on this coming TUESDAY (28th) - at our temporary replacement venue THE GARDEN GATE in Hunslet, Leeds LS10. See earlier post for more info.. |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 18 Jun 16 - 06:30 AM Fear not, Jack - our replacement venue is well away from Birstall. Our session has only coincidental connections with the local area - the Black Bull was just a very good meeting place with a great room to sing in - it just happened to be located in Birstall. Please let's keep this thread focused on the singers' session. |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: GUEST,henryp Date: 17 Jun 16 - 03:22 PM A truly shocking event. Jo Cox lived with her family on a boat named Ederlezi after a traditional folk song by Goran Bregovic about the Romani minority of the Balkans. |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 16 Jun 16 - 06:30 AM Latest news: We are monitoring the Black Bull situation closely, in case the pub suddenly reopens!! However, on the assumption that this is unlikely, we have sought and found a replacement venue, which will be used on a trial basis for the session on 28th June. It's THE GARDEN GATE in Hunslet, south Leeds (Whitfield Place, LS10 2QB). The landlady has kindly granted use of the Rampton Room therein, a separate, smallish snug room with a closeable door. Beers are reportedly good. We will aim to start prompt at 8pm as usual, in order to keep to an 11 pm finish. Access from motorway network is good, with bus routes also serving the A639. There's a quite large car parking area within two minutes' walk. We'll need a good turnout in order to assess the longer-term suitability of this venue - so hoping to see you there! |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: GUEST,padgett Date: 13 Jun 16 - 02:12 AM Yes sorry to hear this David, not your fault as many know the pub is "old established" and been home to many folk clubs over the years ~ hope you find another home shortly Sign of the times in UK pub Chains trying to get as much profit as possible in a dwindling market ~~~~~~ Ray |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 12 Jun 16 - 06:06 AM Bad news - Just Voices is now without a venue. I arrived there yesterday evening for the monthly Drovers club night to find the Black Bull closed and boarded up, with no information on the door. Needless to say, there had been no prior warning of this. I shall endeavour to find out what is happening and seek a replacement venue (even a temporary one) as a matter of urgency. Watch this space... Max - could you please rename this thread "Just Voices Singers' Session - Yorks., UK" ? Thanks! |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 01 Jun 16 - 07:22 AM Refreshing it certainly was last night, a splendid session despite the unfortunate absence of some erstwhile regulars, with some welcome new faces and enthusiastic, real quality singing from everyone concerned. Thanks to you all, especially Nick & Mally and John & Vic for coming the distance, and to Guest Mudcatter BirstallSinger for finally making it to our gathering! Till June's date (28th), then... |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 23 Apr 16 - 05:47 PM It's come around now at last - our next session is confirmed as to take place this coming Tuesday, 26th April, at the usual venue. It will be great to see some new faces as well as returning singers. Come and make it a record attendance this month! |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 02 Apr 16 - 10:32 AM Here's some good-ish news: I've had a phone conversation with the new manager at our venue (the Black Bull). He tells me that his tenure is "for the foreseeable future", and that our room booking dates will be honoured. So it's a case of "as we were", then, with the 2016 calendar still reading as follows: Every last-Tuesday-of-the-month – i.e. 26th April; 31st May; 28th June; 26th July; 30th August; 27th September; 25th October; 29th November… … until December, when we plan to meet on the penultimate Tuesday (20th) instead. We will, naturally, be continuing to put out feelers for a potential "Plan B" should the situation change again suddenly! Thanks for bearing with us, and hoping to see you soon. Cheers! |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 28 Mar 16 - 06:00 AM Stop Press --- Latest news is that the Black Bull will have a brief "stay of execution" for six weeks (under "caretaker management"), so our booking will be honoured and all being well we should still be able to use the venue for our 26th April session. Spread the word...! |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 19 Mar 16 - 01:56 PM Sure, Ian - it's 8 pm, prompt. Looking forward to seeing you. Only this afternoon I received the sad news that the owners of the Black Bull have decided to close the pub with effect from Easter, all of a sudden and with no warning to the landlady or her staff. This coming Tuesday's session WILL go ahead, but we will be looking for another suitable venue with some urgency. Any practical suggestions will be welcomed. |

Some extremely fine performances, an interesting choice of songs, and illuminating conversation. Great to see the return of Nick Dow and Mally, Malcolm, Sally and Barbara, and we enjoyed a welcome first-time visit from Vic Shepherd and John Bowden, also fine contributions from our stalwarts including Joe and Maureen.
