Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Jul 08 - 07:49 PM Well folks, due to financial embarrassment, I won't make it this year. I really wanted to come, but living on a pension has it's limitations I'm afraid. Have a good time, but not too good, otherwise I shall be even more upset at not being there :) John 'G' |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Nancy King Date: 02 Jul 08 - 07:32 PM Charmion, whaddya mean "even without Edmund"??? Did I miss something? We'll be glad to see you, of course, but we want BOTH of you! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Dan Schatz Date: 02 Jul 08 - 06:30 PM We're looking forward to being there! Not sure yet if we'll brave the cabins with a 1 year old or if we'll go to the nearby hotel. We'll see how he's doing when we get closer to the date. Dan |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Charmion Date: 02 Jul 08 - 04:29 PM Even without Edmund, I'm coming to the Getaway. I'll be driving -- it's that "guitar and plane" thing -- so maybe I should pick up Peg in Albany on the way south. Peg? What about it? Our car is a station wagon so there's plenty of room for you and your bedroll and guitar, and I'd love the company. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: artbrooks Date: 02 Jul 08 - 03:27 PM Marion, we will be driving there via Pittsburgh - stopping to visit our daughter there. At least, that is the plan this week. Don't count on that, but it may be a possibility. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 02 Jul 08 - 03:10 PM Peg, Mapquest says it is about 27 miles from Greenbelt, Maryland to West River, Maryland. Those are generalized locations so give or take ten miles I'd say. If you can get to Greenbelt, someone should be able to get you to the Getaway. A great deal of music occurs in small groups in the evening and early morning hours. Commuting to and from is possible, but you will miss much. Big RiB |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Barry Finn Date: 02 Jul 08 - 01:37 AM Peg is from the Upstate NY area, around Albany I believe, in case anyone's coming from that area. She's a delightfully good singer & charming company to boot (hint) Hope that helps ya Peg See you there Barry |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Marion Date: 02 Jul 08 - 01:25 AM Thanks for the information. What I'll probably do is look for somebody to carpool the last stretch with closer to the time, then go to whatever station works best for them. I suppose I might even be able to hook up with someone driving from the north in Pittsburgh or another one of the cities I'd be passing through. Marion |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Peg Date: 01 Jul 08 - 11:05 PM Does anyone know if the Getaway location is anywhere near Greenbelt? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Charlie Baum Date: 01 Jul 08 - 11:02 PM Getting to the Getaway via Amtrak-- Depending on where someone can pick her up, the train station to use might be BWI (the Baltimore-Washington Airport) or New Carrollton (where US 50 and the I-495 Capital Beltway cross). It's also possible that someone can pick her up at Union Station in downtown Washington, DC (within a couple blocks of the US Capitol) or at Penn Station in Baltimore. Many NorthEast Corridor trains stop at all of these stations. If Marion gets a ride, many folks from the DC will be passing close to New Carrollton, while anyone flying in via Southwest Airlines will be at BWI. Transport to West River from a train station involves either carpooling with another Getaway person or a very long taxi ride (though I suppose the airport shuttle van from BWI might also transport someone from the rail station). --Charlie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Fortunato Date: 01 Jul 08 - 10:57 PM Bill and Marion, Washinton, Union Station is 36 miles from the camp, and Baltimore, Penn Stateion is 40 miles. So depending on where Marion is coming from either station will work about the same. Obviously she would pick the quicker or cheaper itinerary that got her to either station. Amtrak home page Now if she's renting a car then Hertz partners with Amtrak just search for rental cars on the Amtrak page, and they have your car waiting at the station. Of course if she's riding with a friend then Union station connects to the Washington Metro. The BWI (Baltimore/Washington International Amtrak station connects to the airport obviously and rental cars are available there as well. Hope this helps. Chance |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 01 Jul 08 - 09:00 PM Anyone know about train stations that would help Marion? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Severn Date: 01 Jul 08 - 04:04 AM "Circle the wagons! Enjins (That Could) are comin'!" ....We hope! Make terracks for the terrain, Jane! See you there. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: kendall Date: 30 Jun 08 - 10:24 PM The Getaway,now there's a great weekend. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Charlie Baum Date: 30 Jun 08 - 09:17 PM The actual rates for the Getaway should be fairly similar to last year's fee schedule, but the FSGW folks will be discussing and ratifying them in the next couple of weeks. I think we had decided to overhaul and re-do the registration form so that mere mortals who aren't on the inside clique can understand it enough to provide the information needed, and that might be in the works as well. The 2008 registration forms should be posted on or about the beginning of the month of August, and we WILL put notice here on Mudcat when they're ready! --Charlie Baum, FSGW President |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Fortunato Date: 30 Jun 08 - 08:48 PM Well, Tami, don't forget, we'll raise a toast to absent friends at 8:00pm EDT at the Pre-Getaway singaround. regards, chance |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Nancy King Date: 30 Jun 08 - 08:39 PM Tami, so sorry you won't be able to make it! We'll miss you! Maybe next year... Hope the new job is going well! Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 30 Jun 08 - 07:18 PM "...some sort of ladder, right?" You don't levitate? Yes, a nice ladder..*grin*. Not very high.... There may be a couple options on trains....depending on whether you intend to rent a car or scrounge a ride. Information will be forthcoming as those with knowledge scan this. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Marion Date: 30 Jun 08 - 06:26 PM I got the weekend off work, and I'm rich this year, so I'm planning on coming... finally! I've wanted to go to a getaway for years. I'll take an upper bunk (I'm assuming that there's some sort of ladder, right?). I'd rather not fly with the guitar, so I'm looking at the train... am I correct in assuming that Baltimore is also the best train station to arrive at? Marion |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: ranger1 Date: 30 Jun 08 - 05:46 PM Alas, I will not be attending this year. It conflicts with peak foliage peeping in the great State o' Maine and my leave request was denied by my new manager. I kinda thought that might happen when I transferred, as that is the wicked busy season at the park. Sigh. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Leadfingers Date: 26 Jun 08 - 07:22 PM Apart from Micca , Carole and Andrew and me , how many UK catters are heading over ?? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: GUEST,Dani Date: 26 Jun 08 - 04:32 PM It's cool, Amos. You can run faster than he can. If I have the job I have now, then, I'll be there for sure!! With girls, and songs, and way-overdue hugs. Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: MMario Date: 26 Jun 08 - 10:38 AM AND an extended day or two might mean cheaper flights. I suspect you could find lodging quite easily for the additional nights. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: beardedbruce Date: 26 Jun 08 - 10:31 AM Amos ( and others) Have you checked about having a house concert or two while you are here, to help defray the costs? Obviously before or after the getaway ( Not that weekend) There really are people willing to pay to hear well presented material. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 26 Jun 08 - 10:27 AM Damn, I'd better go hold up a nobleman on the highway or sompn...I have a huge Irishman pissed off at me...shit, man, I gotta DO sompn!! This could get serious! A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Severn Date: 26 Jun 08 - 10:07 AM I have a spare room and a fold out living room couch available in Laurel MD for the time proceeding Getaway for any weary travellers and am off that week, and so can function as a tour guide, I suppose. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Big Mick Date: 26 Jun 08 - 09:46 AM WTF, PEOPLE!!!!!!! I get a bit scarce, come back to check threads, and find this aul load of shite????? Amos...... find the bread. It's there somewhere. Skarp..... please. I know I missed a year, but let's don't make that into a precedent. I really look forward to seeing you all. I sure hope you can make it. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Crane Driver Date: 25 Jun 08 - 06:10 PM We booked our tickets a while back, and we've been watching fares go steadily upwards ever since. Actually, gas in the UK is only about 40p a litre . . . plus tax. Provided Homeland Security let us in, we'll be there. Andrew & Carole |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: skarpi Date: 25 Jun 08 - 06:02 PM well its gonna be tight my budget , our econamy is goin down very fast so we have to see if I make it or not ?? ATB Skarpi Iceland |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 25 Jun 08 - 01:02 AM Naw, Brit, I've been a tad longer ont he Cat than I have been going to Getaways. Took me a while to get over the shock, you see.... A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Janie Date: 25 Jun 08 - 12:55 AM Oh wow! I missed the opportunity to post "200" Simple pleasures for simple people, eh? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Janie Date: 25 Jun 08 - 12:28 AM I'm guessing that anyone thinking of flying should commit and book flights now, as air fares are only going to go higher. For those of us who have frequent flyer miles that we are not likely to use, do they have to be used by the person who accumulates them, or can that person use them to book a flight for some one else, if we were inclined to donate them so some one could attend the Getaway? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: TRUBRIT Date: 25 Jun 08 - 12:10 AM Not me - I think - not this time......Amos -- I thought you were an attendee from 100 years back not a newbie like me....... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Leadfingers Date: 24 Jun 08 - 07:45 PM Dollar / pound rate today was $1.97 , and we are paying around £1.20 a litre for unleaded which is nearly $10 per US Gallon !! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: artbrooks Date: 24 Jun 08 - 05:16 PM Bill, I expect that the changes in the exchange rate will help those from the UK, at least a little, but I'd guess our drive East will cost about twice what it did in 2006. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Micca Date: 24 Jun 08 - 05:11 PM I booked flights today.....!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 24 Jun 08 - 05:08 PM Boy, I am imagining what the fare/gas increases PLUS normal budget restraints are doing to our long-distant visitors. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 24 Jun 08 - 12:59 PM I am grinding my teeth hoping the family budget doesn't let me down. I have attended faithfully for three years now, and I would hate to break the winning streak!! :D Besides, its the only vacation I get! A |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Fortunato Date: 24 Jun 08 - 11:44 AM The weather should be grand, early enough before the rains and still warm from summer. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 24 Jun 08 - 11:18 AM Art..We 'locals' never expect registration forms to show up before mid-Summer....we have been trying to increase lead time now that it has become an international event. Look for new information soon...(Charlie Baum will read this and no doubt be galvanized into exuberant action...☺) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: artbrooks Date: 24 Jun 08 - 11:06 AM We're coming, and would love to register. Howsomever, the FSGW page still has the 2007 registration blank at the "get your snail mail form here" link and there is no on-line registration (even though the page says there is). FSGW folks - can this get fixed? |
