Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: Phil Edwards Date: 21 Jan 13 - 09:49 AM Hi Deb, You might recognise this, despite the title: Banks of Yarrow I gave you a credit in the notes here. |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: DebC Date: 21 Jan 13 - 09:32 AM I sang "Tired O'Workin'". "The Jute Mill Song" is the one that starts with "O dear me, the mill is gang fast". Many of the textile mills in Dundee were called "Jute Mills" because that was the fiber that was used in spinning. A good explanation of the substance called jute. can be found by clicking the link. Deb |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: My guru always said Date: 21 Jan 13 - 07:26 AM Glad you all had a good time, we are so looking forward to Deb's visit here at Old Keepers! So, which one was the 'Jute Mill song'? |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: DebC Date: 20 Jan 13 - 07:34 PM And I want the sausages, peppers and onions recipe, Mary! Here is what I sang and the composers as well as I can recall, since I don't use set lists. I might also get some songs mixed up since I didn't do the same show the night before. Set 1-I might have done one or two others in this set but cannot recall) Tongue-Tied (Emily Portman) Night Owl Homeward Turns (Steve Tilston) St. Brendan's Fair Isle (Jimmy Driftwood) Robin Hood and the Pedlar (Child-trad) The Rose You Wore For Me (Danny Carnahan) Eat Bertha's Mussels (John Roberts) I Can See Your Aura (Mark Graham) All the Tunes In the World (Ewan MacVicar) Set 2 Tired O'Workin' (Mary Brooksbank) NB-There is a song by MB called the Jute Mill Song, but this isn't it Widowmaker (John Conolly) Nantucket Girl's Song (trad) Brisk Young Butcher (trad) Matterhorn (Gloria Jeffries) Johnny Be Fair (trad) Long Grey Line (Alan Hunter) Hand of the Almighty-one verse (John R. Butler) McGinnis Gets a Job (Harrigan) It was a lovely evening and so great to see you all again. Thanks so much for all the kind words and for being such great friends. Deb |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: SINSULL Date: 20 Jan 13 - 06:55 PM Maybe ws can gwt a set list from Deb. There were a few I would love to learn. The Jute Mill song, for one. |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: Jeri Date: 20 Jan 13 - 02:12 PM I'm not sure how it happened, but I found some cat hair on me. Yes, it was a great time, and it was great to see the beautiful and talented Ms Cowan again. I didn't not like any of the songs, but there were old favorites among them, and some absolutely stunning new ones. The first one was one of those, but as I wasn't taking notes, I've forgotten the name of the song and composer. Hep me! Hep me! Truly, it was so easy to get lost in a song and completely forget all else. Glad to see Gordon again--glad to see everyone who made it. The shepherd's pie was to-die-for, as was the key lime pie. All the food was wonderful. And Alice actually fell asleep on my lap and didn't want to get off. Velcro cat. |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: kendall Date: 20 Jan 13 - 02:05 PM Dob did a great job, as usual, and the food was outstanding. |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: jacqui.c Date: 20 Jan 13 - 01:58 PM It was a great evening. Deb, as usual, gave a superb performance in spite of not long having got over flu. She always finds some songs that invite audience participation, always enjoyed by this audience. Everybody seemed to enjoy the evening and it was nice to be able to introduce two consummate artistes to each other. Deb and Gordon spent some time talking and finding out what they had in common. Kendall and Gordon left relatively early. I stayed over and the remaining four ladies finally got to bed around 1.30. The other lady's name was Gail - the sister of a friend of Debs. Now we want to try and get some house concerts in Maine for Deb and John Roberts, to make it worth their while to head up this way! |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: ranger1 Date: 20 Jan 13 - 01:54 PM Jason and I needed that. Good friends, good music, good food. What more can anyone ask for? |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: SINSULL Date: 20 Jan 13 - 12:32 PM Deb just left. The house is very quiet. She managed the drive in 5+ hours and was tired when she arrived but instead of a nap we talked and sang and enjoyed each others company. Deb put on a wonderful evening of new and traditional music. The Matterhorn was a first for me. Her Darlin' Corey done acapello and bluesy slow is amazing.Lots of chorus songs with lovely harmonies from Jeri, Jacqui and Gordon. It was so good to have her back and catch up. Tami and Jason were here along with a lady from Portland who does an AM radio program - sorry, name is gone for the moment. Trubrit's Tom outdid himself with Shepherd's Pie to die for. Lots of food, drink, conversation. Jacqui produced breakfast with more conversation.I really enjoyed myself.Thank you all for adding to the evening. SINS |

Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert S Portland Maine From: Charley Noble Date: 11 Jan 13 - 07:17 PM Sinsull- No, it's not the Mayan Calendar. It's a wonderful nautical calendar designed and published in the UK. My confusion about the date has to do with the UK calendar format which has saturday and sunday next to themselves on the righthand side. Ugh! Sorry about adding confusion to this thread.
