Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Ruth Archer Date: 06 Feb 10 - 09:33 AM Mark "BNP member" Stevens, it's hardly surprising that FAF as a movement is not something which attracts your support. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Mark Stevens Date: 05 Feb 10 - 09:41 PM dear Ruth 'ooooh-noo!' Archer, As I've implied before somewhere; I don't really bother much with Folkies or Folk Clubs nowadays, I found them too clicky, boring [Borfolk indeed..] and insular. So the wearing of FAF (sic) tee-shirts doesn't really bother me. I've never seen anyone at my local pub(s) or Waitrose/Sainsburys/UKIP Member managed farmshop wearing one ..? |

Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Ruth Archer Date: 04 Feb 10 - 03:10 PM "I said he was not the best singer - do you seriously think he is? I'm sure he doesn't! I could easily name you ten male singer who are better. That does not mean he is no good, far from it, he is brilliant, but let's not kid ourselves, he is not the best" Actually, the title is not the "best" folk dinger; it's "Folk Singer of the Year". As Tom says, Jon Boden has done huge amounts this year. He has worked with Bellowhead, Spiers and Boden and the Remnant Kings - each delivering material that is fresh, timely and important. His work continues to draw in legions of non-folkies, not least among them Martin Green, who is Head of the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremonies. As far as I know, Bellowhead is pretty much the only folk band that is really on his radar, and they are probably our best hope for getting any representation of folk into the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. It may not happen at all, but if it does, it's because Bellowhead register on the radar beyond the folk world in a way that 95% of folk bands do not. And apart from that, Jon is a wonderful proponent of traditional music and a damn fine singer. So, for all of these reasons, I am proud to have voted for him. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: The Sandman Date: 04 Feb 10 - 02:47 PM I would refuse such an award. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: SunrayFC Date: 04 Feb 10 - 02:38 PM Frankly I don't get all this. It's like saying "I voted conservative- how come we got a labour government?" The judges whoever they are, are the judges. The reasons they choose who they choose are known to them and them only. I bet if any one of the above won an award the tune would change. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Jeeze Date: 04 Feb 10 - 02:21 PM Just curious who your "ten male singer who are better" would be? |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 04 Feb 10 - 01:45 PM Silas, you may be focusing on the 'singing' part of the title too much. I personally think Jon IS a truly fantastic singer, if not to everyone's taste (but you can't please all of the people..). His timbre, delivery, expression and originality combine to powerful effect, and he always delivers his chosen material brilliantly (what other definition of great singing is there)? It's not bel canto, but the adjective might be clue here. My interpretation of the award, however, is that it's not about vocal technique. It's about being a 'folk singer,' as in the job description - all of it. No folk singer has delivered more than Jon in the last twelve months - his workload has been prodigious (terrifying, actually) and he's made a lot of good new things happen, and happen extremely effectively. He IS at least best equal best folk singer at the moment (and after 'best equal,' in a game like this it has to be a lottery, naturally). I'll vote for that. (Jon, you can leave the used fivers in the normal place ;-) |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Silas Date: 04 Feb 10 - 12:37 PM Jeeze. I said he was not the best singer - do you seriously think he is? I'm sure he doesn't! I could easily name you ten male singer who are better. That does not mean he is no good, far from it, he is brilliant, but let's not kid ourselves, he is not the best. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Folkiedave Date: 04 Feb 10 - 09:22 AM Been packing out venues for about eight years. And will continue to do so IMHO for as long as he wants to. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Dave Sutherland Date: 04 Feb 10 - 08:47 AM "someone who, with the best will in the world, is not the best singer" Crumbs, I hope that nobody tells the 60+people who have already paid for tickets to see Jon at our place on Sunday night. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Henryp Date: 04 Feb 10 - 07:55 AM I'd like to see artists restricted to one award each year. I'd also like the winner of an award to be excluded from consideration in next year's competition. Hopefully, this would spread the titles round a bit more. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Silas Date: 04 Feb 10 - 07:45 AM Well, as I said earlier, I like JON Boden, I know he is passionate about his music, but so are most people at his level in the profession. The problem is, if you are going to have these awards, is that by giving the award to someone who, with the best will in the world, is not the best singer, you deprive a more worthy candidate from a more deserved prize. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Folkiedave Date: 04 Feb 10 - 07:43 AM Jon Boden is a great singer. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Spleen Cringe Date: 04 Feb 10 - 07:41 AM Me above sans cookie. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST Date: 04 Feb 10 - 07:41 AM Silas:Ahhh, I see. So you don't actually need to be able to sing well at all to be voted 'Best Singer' 1. What Suegorgeous said. 2. Rather someone who is passionate and idiosyncratic (but not necessarily technically perfect) than someone who is technically brilliant but lacking in verve, soul and passion. Jon B puts heart and soul into his performances and it shows. Anyway, as a lover of those old recording of traditional singers, I've never held technical ability alone to be that important. Inhabiting the song and and putting it across like you truly believe in it counts for far more... 3. "Best" is purely in the ear of the beholder. Attempts to define objective standards are doomed to failure. Hooray! Silas: Are you one of the judges by any chance? Are you 'aving a laff? No, I'm just a lowly mortal with a heartfelt desire to listen to folk music that cannot be categorised as polite, bland or anodyne. Bring on the folk-brut revival! |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Suegorgeous Date: 04 Feb 10 - 06:31 AM "Not trying to sound like anyone else" is not the same as not being able to sing well! |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Voter Date: 04 Feb 10 - 06:03 AM I will remain nameless but i voted and it is a very open voting system but IS based on your knowledge of the folk releases/gigs of the year. If you only read the press and don't get out there and see the bands then you might be swayed by others or just be lazy. A lot of the people i voted for didn't win or were not nominated, others did. My decisions were based on who i had seen live that year and who's albums i had listened too. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Silas Date: 04 Feb 10 - 05:47 AM "Now then... one of the reasons Jon Boden is about the best male singer in folk right now is precisely because he doesn't bother trying to sound like anyone except Jon Boden. That alone is worth the prize." Ahhh, I see. So you don't actually need to be able to sing well at all to be voted 'Best Singer'. I see. Are you one of the judges by any chance? |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Folkiedave Date: 04 Feb 10 - 04:53 AM Good for you Joanie. The right-wing have no problems spouting their views at every opportunity. Look at the media power of Rupert Murdoch. The occasional opportunity to put forward a left-wing point of view is one not to be missed. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Ruth Archer Date: 04 Feb 10 - 03:13 AM I hate to think how eaten up Guest: Mark Stevens would have been if he'd seen the dozens and dozens of Folk Against Fascism t-shirts and badges being worn by the attendees, including many of the winners and presenters. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: EnglishFolkfan Date: 04 Feb 10 - 02:44 AM The annual argument regarding the duality of SoH on the BBC Radio 2 Folk and Acoustic Message Board prompted me to post the following comment there this week: On BBC Radio Devon 31Jan10 on Jim Causley's Devon Folk - 1hr 35 mins in and Steve Knightly announced that Show of Hands were actually a Trio and not a Duo ......... "musically and as an entity we are a very much a Trio" BBC iPlayer Jim Causley's Devon Folk 31Jan2010 Will BBC Radio 2 please take note of that fact when accepting submissions for the 2011 Folk Awards? |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Mark Stevens Date: 03 Feb 10 - 09:23 PM Tonight's Radio 2 broadcast: The show seemed to be riddled with performers expressing their bigoted Left-wing self righteous Political bias.. I switched my radio off after 12 minutes. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Spleen Cringe Date: 03 Feb 10 - 07:23 PM Now then... one of the reasons Jon Boden is about the best male singer in folk right now is precisely because he doesn't bother trying to sound like anyone except Jon Boden. That alone is worth the prize. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Silas Date: 03 Feb 10 - 05:35 PM Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Folkiedave Date: 03 Feb 10 - 05:20 PM Now I like John Boden he is very gifted in many ways, but best singer is is not. He even spells his name Jon. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Captain Jack Sparrow Date: 03 Feb 10 - 01:25 PM I could have been a judge, but I never had the maths for the judgin'. I never had it, so I'd had it, as far as being a judge was concerned. They said "what's 2+1?" and I said 3, but they said that wouldn't do because in their system it's 2. I managed to get through the pirating exams - they're not very rigorous, they only ask you one question, they say 'Who are you?' and I got seventy-five per cent on that." |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Silas Date: 03 Feb 10 - 12:28 PM Quite. And John Boden -best singer? Now I like John Boden he is very gifted in many ways, but best singer is is not. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Folkiedave Date: 03 Feb 10 - 12:27 PM Wouldn't dream of commenting on the knowledge of the judges (like Dick suggested). But since they don't know the difference between a traditional song and one written in the last couple of years, and the differnce between a duo and a trio - I do have my doubts!! |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: evansakes Date: 03 Feb 10 - 12:02 PM Folkiedave said "we don't know who the judges are. So we can't judge how much they know" I wonder who will have the knowledge to be the judge of Folkiedave's judgement on the knowledge of the judges. |

Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Captain Jack Sparrow Date: 03 Feb 10 - 11:01 AM This new maths of theirs has quite done me poor head in, now all me pieces of eight have become pieces of seven. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Folkiedave Date: 03 Feb 10 - 10:38 AM The problem is as well Dick - and here I have regaled constantly against this including taking the BBC to the Information Commissioner - we don't know who the judges are. So we can't judge how much they know. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,Silas Date: 03 Feb 10 - 10:34 AM Course you are! Trouble is, we can't share it or make our own judgement without knowing who you are talking about. Howver, I respect your decision not to name names if you don't feel comfortable with it. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: The Sandman Date: 03 Feb 10 - 10:17 AM No, I am not prepared to do that on a public forum. I am nevertheless entitled to an opinion. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: Folknacious Date: 02 Feb 10 - 06:52 PM there are a lot of people who have got themselves in to influential positions in the UK folk music industry, who know very little about folk music, and even less about traditional music or source singers. Since there are "a lot", please give us all the benefit of a list of who (iyo) some of these people might be? |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: GUEST,BassmanD Date: 02 Feb 10 - 06:14 PM Says at the front of this forum something about the preservation of Folk music... Is that why so many posters object to musicians who dare to move the genre forward and make it relevant to real people?? Richly deserved congrats to SOH for long overdue recognition. |
Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: The Sandman Date: 02 Feb 10 - 02:27 PM well, who were the judges?.the results will probably tell us more about the judges than anything else. personally,If I want to get an expert opinion,on how to make a fruit cake,I would go to someone, who I know makes delicious fruit cakes. [imo]there are a lot of people who have got themselves in to influential positions in the UK folk music industry, who know very little about folk music, and even less about traditional music or source singers. |

Subject: RE: Folk Awards - Best Duo From: evansakes Date: 02 Feb 10 - 03:56 AM Just listening to Chris Evans on R2 (don't ask me why!). He spent the last night "with the folkies" down at the Folk Awards. He said the place was full of "more celebrities than you could shake a sick at" At least he's playing a couple of excerpts. The sublime and very musical 'Man of Constant Sorrow' by the Transatlantic Sessions gang following the god-awful racket of 'I Fought The Law' by The Bad Shepherds. Chris has also just admitted he'd never heard of Cara Dillon before... |
