She named her. Well, we both did.

Buddica was a Celtic queen who raised hell with the Romans. They raped her daughters in front of her and she was rather miffed, so, she burned Londinium to the ground.

They caught up with her in time, but they never forgot what happens when you disrespect a woman's daughters.

I hate what has happened to drag racing...

I hate on-board computers...

I love head-to-head, balls-to-the-wall drag racing...

They didn't have bracket racing when I was coming up... I drag raced a lot of different cars in the early to mid 60s... AC Cobra (high 11s to low 12s), 427 Comet (high 10s), 426 Fury (low 13s) and the baddest Falcon in America, a 289 HP (271 hp), 4 speed which was a high 12s car...

Now a days??? Computers and guys hitting their brakes before the finish line to not "break out"...

I gotta agree on the Martin guitar... I technically still own my '66 D-18 but after going years playing other guitars I gave mine to my great-niece... She loves it...

As for rears??? Yeah, Marilyn Monroe's was right nice... As for a 350 v. 411 rear, sure, given a long enough stretch a car with less hp and torque and a 350 rear will run faster than one with a 411...

Some '49 and '50 Fords had 411 rears but with overdrive... Best of both worlds...

Henry Ford once remarked, "The Police are going to drive Fords if I have to give them away".Chevy still out sold them. :-)

If the old Fords were so great, how come Chevy outsold them every year except 1957? Shine haulers are a pretty small market.

I must insist that the main difference is the gear ratio. A 350 Ford will outrun a 411 Chevy on the highway. A nice rear end is nothing to brag about, unless you are Marilyn Monroe.

It's like these Martin guitar worshipers bragging about the "Power". They get it by raising the bridge to where it is painful to play. A fraction of an inch of plastic is the difference.BFD

My only experience with an older Ford was with these guys I went to college with them and watched them build the flathead. (I cut floormats for it)

Notice the line "We used a Rochester 2CG carburetor with a home made wooden adaptor, ..."

They had bought the carb, but no adapter arrived, so they carved one from a piece of White Oak! They said the fun was watching the judges thumb thru the rules, trying decide if it was legal. They couldn't find any specific rule against it, so they ran it several times before getting a standard adapter.

Bobert... taht why Daddy burned up?

Kendall... no matter the gas. Fer years, the 305 had a camshaft that was crap. Ya could buy an after market at a reasonable price but if ya didn't have the ability to put one in yerself it ran major bucks.

Now, Ford pickups have outsold all the others for many years... or did up until recently (I wouldn't know today). Simple reason... $5k less than GM and $7k less than Dodge last two times I bough a truck. Over the lifetime of a truck, best bang for the buck IF yer workin it. If it's a "nice ta have" and it's fer toolin around, buy a GM or a Dodge. Seriously... if ya want a truck fer beatin the shit out of, ya can't beat a Ford on sheer $. But, if yer just gettin groceries, don't buy a Ford pickup on accounta it will cost ya more in the long run. At least, that is my experience after owning a half dozen and having friends who own Chevs and GMCs and Dodges.

Now, here is something that truely puzzles me. A Jeep that comes close to an FJ Criuser is about the same price but does not have auto tranny, AC, cabin filter... okay, I will stop there except for one more thing... doesn't have a cover over the fuckin gas cap? Supposed to go thru the mud and the blood and the beer and it doesn't have a gas cap cover!!!??? Apparently, the yuppies that buy Jeeps are... are... yuppies. Stunned as me arse that is! How is it possible to build a woods buggy without a proper cover over the gas cap????

Your memory ain't up to snuff, Capt'n...

I'm sticking with the 78 v 90 hp... Google it up and see for yourself... Don't just accept the first site... Lotta folks confuzerated about stuff and just put out the same old same old...

Tell ya' what, Roy Hall took his Red Vogt '39 Ford and beat the crud outta every Chevy in the South... Never lost to a Chevy... Lapped most of them... Chevy didn't have the balls back then...

Chevy ain't had much balls since... 348 and 409s were long stroke truck engines... Same with 396 and 427s... Crap... Wouldn't turn up... 327 was the only Chevy engine ever worth a danged...

Ford??? 312 would rock... 289 would rock... 390 would rock... 406 would rock... 427 would rock... Okay, they had some losers (352, 401, 428)...

As for that big block Dodge??? If ya' wanted to pull stumps it was fine... Lotta torques but wouldn't turn up... Steve Earle got it wrong...

Cheap gas will cause spark knock. My Brother had a big block Chevy and he was too cheap to buy premium gas, which the manual called for, so he ran 87 octane and burned holes in the pistons.

Kendall.... Chevy Impala... I had one with a 305 Candyshaft and the spark knock could not be taken out no matter where I set the timing.

My old man bought a Chevy Nova with a 6. Damn thing would barely climb a low slope. Got a great story about it that involves the owner losing his dealership... kinda hard to charge GM for putting 8 plugs in a 6 eh? Buddy sold the dealership to his brother-in-law.

Steve Earle's Daddy ran a big block Dodge up on Copperhead Road didn't he?

Ahhhhh, you can only do so much with gearing if you don't have the grunt...

In '39 Ford increased the compression ration and in turn got the hp up to 90...

The inline 6 that Chevy was making had been stuck at 78 for years...

If I could trade my 1954 Pontiac Chieftain for a 1934 Ford, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

The winter of 1946, one of my Brothers in law had a 1934 Ford, and one morning the temperature was 40 below zero, NO SHIT! His Ford was the only car in the neighborhood that started.
It was so cold, it would not move. The oil in the transmission and rear end was so congealed it killed the engine when he tried to pop the clutch.

That flat head Ford was one great engine. That old stove bolt Chevy six was just as great; in warm weather.

Chrysler? We have a Pacifica and it is every bit as comfortable as the 1960 Mercedes Benz 220 S that I had many years ago. Chrysler has always led the field in new innovations. Of course, they are in a different price range than Ford or Chevy.

Yo, Capt'n...

The ol' whiskey runners ran Fords... Not Chevys.. There was a reason for this... If Chevy could have been tweeked to outrun cops then they would have run Chevys... And them Fords were running with an extra 1000 pounds of shine in the back...

That's the way it was...

Ask any ol' Southern moonshiner and they will tell you... The Ford V-8 was the car of choice for all of them...

Okay, there were runners who would use like old hearses or fake trucks that looked like wood trucks but when it cam to cars??? Ford V-8...

The funny part about this is that Henry Ford was a prohibitionist... Never drank a drop in his life... But he was making the cars that would get the job done...

Lotta of these guy who would run shine were also the beginnings of what would one day become NASCAR... Like Lloyd Seay and Roy Hall who were sponsored by another ridge-runner, Raymond Parks...

Roy Hall had to race under different names during his career because he seemed to always have "charges" and the law was always looking for him... He raced a '39 Ford as Ralph "Bad Eye" Shirley many a time with cops watching the race not having a clue that he Roy Hall and had half a dozen charges against him...

I suspect the big three trucks were of better quality than the cars in the 70s to the 2000 s. Maybe they put more engineering in to them, maybe they did not change them as much as the cars (with the effort towards better fuel economy) In addition to the front wheel drive issues, 9hevy (like Chrysler) had some auto tranny problems that took them far too much time to fix. Fords arrangement with Mazda made their transision smoother.

If it was not for the Carivan, I suspect Chrysler would now be dead.

No contest! No difference!

Rover 75 club CDT. 130,000 miles over twelve years and still ticking like a Swiss watch.

The BMW engine is pokey and reliable, gives about 50 mpg on a motorway, will cruise happily for hours at a steady 70mph, and at the end of a 400 mile journey you aren't crippled when you get out.

In sports mode it goes like s h one t off a shovel, and the clincher, it corners as if it were on rails.

The Chevy Impala is the best selling full size car in history.

If you run a 6 cyl. chevy with a 4-11 rear end and put it up against a v'8 flat head Ford with a 354 rear end, naturally the Ford has the advantage..

I used to go with my Brother in law hauling pulp wood. He had a Chevy, and his rival had a Ford. Up hill the Chevy outran the Ford, but down hill and on the straights the Ford was slightly faster.
It's all in the rear end gear ratio.

The big three perfected the rear wheel drive. $$hen they converted to front wheel drive, they "f"ed it up. So, some of the rear wheel drives that survived the transformation longer remained reliable- like the Chevy Caprice and cousins.

Since then, the BIG THREE have copied their Japanese competitors and learned a thing or two and are finally making decent cars...

There was a reason why moonshiners ran Fords... They would outrun everything else... Even with a half a ton of corn liquor in the back...

Red Vogt, remember him??? He'd take a flathead Ford engine and "tweek" it and even on hills it would outrun cops...

Back in the early 60's the Fords would run 1-2-3-4-5-6 in all the NASCAR races... No one could touch 'um... Then Ford just got worn out from whuppin' up on Chevy's and Slo-pars and got outta factory sponsored race cars...

I only bought it for nostalgia; I lost my innocence in the back seat of a '37 Chevy....never did thank her.

One of my neighbors had a 1937 Ford 60 special. It wouldn't pull the wrinkles out of a sheet. I said 1940 just to snap your garter! hehehe.

I don't know what happened to that v/8 chevy engine in 1915. With gas at 4 cents a gallon, maybe it was a gas guzzler.
Actually, a well tuned flat head Ford v/8 was hard to beat. They both had the same hp, but on the stretch the Ford revved up higher and did out run the Chevy, but on the hills it waS A DIFFERENT STORY. tHE CHEVY HAD MORE PULLING POWER. oF COURSE, THEY DIDN'T RACE ON HILLS. Damn capslock. The secret was in the differential gear ratio. My '37 Chevy had a 4-11 ratio; good for pulling stumps, but....

When I was in the service our ship was in dry dock in Portsmouth ship yard. We used to come to Portland on liberty up the Maine turnpike. One of my ship mates had a '46 Ford and I had a '47 DeSoto. Of course we let them have their heads and that DeSoto ate that Ford. He said he was doing 100 mph when I passed him, but, my speedo said 90.

I thought I wouldn't post to this thread as far as comparisons, but, let's take a look at the record.
Since 1930, Chevrolet has out sold Ford every year except 1957. Today, the 1957 Chevy two door hard top is gold and the Ford is iron.

Chevy had hydraulic brakes in 1936; Ford got them in 1940.
Chevy had a v/8 engine in 1915, Ford in 1933

There was a guy on Mt. Desert Island in 1949 who's new ford was running rough. They finally found the problem. One cylinder had no piston at all!

I do have to honor Ford for refusing the bailout.

He saw the oddometer. Hmmm. He said that I should work the brakes really hard every so often so that they get some real exercise and I should be okay but that he wanted me to come back next time they are messed up. As for the terrible clunking in the arse end when the box moves sideways... EVERY vehicle does that. Odd that the six new trucks on their lot that I tested don't. I'll do it again on Sunday when they are closed just to make sure I wan't dreaming when I did it before.

Got a 5 year old Skoda Octavia estate 1.9tdi with 48,000 miles for £5,000 7 years ago. Still going strong at 12 years. Over 200,000 miles on the clock. You can get 50 cases of wine in the back with no bother and carry any amount of furniture, luggage etc.
