Subject: RE: BS: Peter K (Fionn) has legionella From: Big Mick Date: 12 Oct 06 - 07:54 PM I like your attitude, you cranky old fart. Good on ya. Have a good time, pay attention to the signals, though. You will know when its time to sit down. I will be confiscating that "wear out than rust out" line. But understand that an attitude like that disqualifies you from any consideration for Layabouts at Large and For Hire. Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: Peter K (Fionn) has legionella From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 12 Oct 06 - 07:46 PM OK, Big Mick, here's the update. Progress has been incredibly good so far - much better than forecast. I have gained about 7 kilograms in the past two weeks and I an managing to do enough exercise to ensure that none of it (so far) is fat! The walking stick was discarded after a few days and I can now walk a couple of miles with no problem. The one thing I can't do is go upstairs two at a time. I still launch my foot on to the second step out of habit - but that's as far as it goes.... By the end of October I aim to be going upstairs two at a time and chewing gum at the same time. Spaw's commoents about relatives/visits were spot on. The more I recovered in hospital, the more the visitor rate dwindled, and the time dragged ever more slowly. Each day was like a year, A year whose days are long. To the dismay of one or two friends and relatives, I've decided to press on with a booked trip to Croatia and Bosnia next week, on the bsis that it would be better to wear out than rust out. |

Subject: RE: BS: Peter K (Fionn) has legionella From: catspaw49 Date: 05 Oct 06 - 01:08 PM Well. I'm glad you're back but you have to look at it differently. I mean what the hell is the use of being hospitalized if it doesn't result in a near-death experience? It's good for your family as well. See, if you're in for awhile because you ar having your feet scraped, they get bored and generally pissed having to make the repeated trips to visit you. However if you're looking like you might check out, they don't seem to mind as much. Then there's the drugs. When you're really critical you get some real quality shit and can cop a significant buzz. Plus, if you're in a coma, even a medically induced one, you can catch up on all that rest you've been missing......AND, you've already seen the results from a dieting standpoint. After you get used to the Vent, you don't even have to worry about breathing! Now those hospital born post trauma illnesses are great. Myself, I had a couple of staph problems but instead of the E.Coli., might I recommend another intestinal bug called C.Dif.? It has become very big around here to the point of being medically resistant and a chronic condition that requires constant monitoring and massive doses of "good" bacteria for months and months. E.Coli ends to quickly. C.Dif just keeps on giving. It's those continuing potential killers that keep your family interested and not just pissed because you're screwing up their daily life. It is simply a matter of perspective. Welcome back! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Peter K (Fionn) has legionella From: Dave'sWife Date: 05 Oct 06 - 12:10 PM Wow - so glad to hear you survived all that! in 1994, I had a bout with a Strep throat which progressed to ulcered tonsilities that eventually turned into full blown Scarlet fever. Only problem was, none of the young doctors I went to had ever seen a case of Scarlet fever (Strep gone into the bloodstream, causing red rashes behind the knees, on the neck, inside thighs and in arm pits at first). I was misdiagnosed first as having a spider bite which is common in Los Angeles and then when it spread, they thought it was an allergic reaction to detergent or soap. When I looked like a lobster, none of them could believe it wasn't a sunburn. When darker red welts formed over the suburn looking rash, I went to an emrgency room and got shut off in isolation becuase they thought I had German Measles or some rare tropical disease. Finally, a 73 year old doctor walked in, took one look at me, gave me the once over and said "Scarlet Fever, give the girl some penicillin and send her home." I spent 2 weeks having to lay in the dark and not watch TV or read. Freinds came over and read to me using little booklights. I was bored out of my mind when I was awake which wasn't often. That series of illnesses took the bounce out of my bungee to quote Hutch of Wallace and Gromit's wererabbit film. When I emerged from it, I weighed 108 pounds (I'm 5 foot 11 inches BTW)! Moral of the story - I lived through i! Peter seems to have lived through his trial for which I am very grateful. I hope he doesn't have to spend his recovery in the dark with no TV or books! Cheers Peter. Glad you proved those docs wrong and lived! I bet you're glad too, eh? |

Subject: RE: BS: Peter K (Fionn) has legionella From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 05 Oct 06 - 11:56 AM Well, here I am, back in harness at the keyboard. There was a difficult week when the family, including Sorcha (White Tiger) were told I couldn't last more than a few days, but somehow things turned round. There was a big setback when e coli and MRSA added themselves to the concoction of killer infections in my system, but thewe were quite easily managed and this time a good outcome was always predicted. I am out of hospital, obviously very much recovered, but amazingly weak. I weigh just over 10 stone (140 pounds, 62 kilograms) and need to gain more than 15 kilograms (34 pounds?) to get back to my normal fit weight. I am gradually becoming mobile, venturing a yard or two farther each day, like a cat charting out new territory. Many thanks for all the messages, not only from friends, but also from those I've annoyed (Big Mick and WYSIWYG in particular in the latter category - especially WYSIWYG's self-constraint, LOL) Those from alanabit and kat bowled me over - I can't live up to that! Best to all - Peter Kirker (aka Fionn) |
