Subject: RE: BS: How You Chose Your 'Handle' From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 29 Apr 05 - 08:16 AM "Bee-dubya-ell" is "BWL" spelled out. "BWL" is short for "Big Wanking Liar", which is one of the things I was called soon after my arrival here. I chose it because the other things I was commonly called ("Shit-For-Brains" and "Dumbfuck") seemed, somehow, less appropriate. |
Subject: RE: BS: How You Chose Your 'Handle' From: PoppaGator Date: 28 Apr 05 - 06:31 PM Wilson Pickett's cover version of "LOATD" was better known than the original, but Chris Kenner's performance of his own composition, like a lot of records made in New Orleans, made the national "R&B" (i.e., black-community-only) charts while selling to a broader interracial market only regionally (i.e., along the Gulf Coast from Houston to Mobile/Pensacola). Chris Kenner is probably best known for his one truly national hit, "I Like It Like That." I don't recall his real name ~ "Kenner" is the name of his hometown, a small city outside New Orleans that was once a farming center and a separate little metropolis, but which now has become a suburb as the N.O. metropolitan area has grown. Kenner is the site of our local airport, Louis Armstrong International (formerly known as Moisant Field). |

Got to know how to pony Like Bony Maronie Mash potato, do the alligator Put your hand on your hips, yeah Let your backbone slip Do the Watusi Like my little Lucy Hey! Uh!" Poppa Gator, Thanks for the story about your name. I always wondered how to "do the alligator". Now I know {sorta}. And BTW, I always will associate 'Land Of A Thousand Dances' with {the Wicked} Wilson Pickett. |

Subject: RE: BS: How You Chose Your 'Handle' From: PoppaGator Date: 28 Apr 05 - 02:31 PM To "pop" a "gator" is to execute a certain dance-floor maneuver (it would be an exaggeration to call it a "step," let along a "dance") known as the Alligator (c.f. "Do the Alligator," Chris Kenner, Land of 1,000 Dances). One simply places all four limbs, and/or the torso, in contact with the floor (in either the prone or the supine position) and mimes some kind of writhing or humping motion. The Alligator was a sort of precursor to breakdancing ~ same idea, but not nearly as acrobatically advanced. When I got out of the Army in 1973 and returned to New Orleans, my communal-housemates and other friends were completely caught up in a "gator revival" centered around performaces by the newly-rediscovered Henry Roeland Byrd, aka Professor Longhair (or "Fess" for short). Fess played the most exuberantly joyful music any of us had ever heard, inspiring us to hitherto unexplored heights of ecstacy and public displays of abandon. We began organizing parties and dances to feature Fess, providing him as many opportunites as possible to play (while providing ourselves opportunities to cut up). Our biggest extravaganzas were two annual events, the "Gator Ball" held on New Years Eve and also on the Saturday night before Mardi Gras. We began referring to our loosely organized group as the "Krewe of Gator" and our mythical monarch as "Poppa Gator." Every venue we rented to host an Annual Gator Ball made it a point to ask us never to come back again, with a single exception: The 501 Club, a large barnlike bar and dancehall on the riverfront at 501 Napoleon, corner of Tchoupitoulas Street. After a couple of years, some of the gang chipped in a few hundred bucks apiece, bought the 501 Club as a permanent place for Fess to play and for the Gator festivities to continue, and named the new venture "Tipitina's," after one of Mr. Byrd's greatest compositions. You may have heard of it. Anyway, it is very presumptuous on my part to claim the title "Poppa Gator" ~ no one mere human was ever intended to embody this mythical character ~ but I figured no one in my immediate circle or real-life 3D friends would ever be the wiser if I adopted the name amongst all you cyberspace strangers, scattered around the globe. Don't rat me out, please! |

Subject: RE: BS: How You Chose Your 'Handle' From: Azizi Date: 26 Apr 05 - 10:41 AM "Azizi" is a KiSwahili personal name that was given to me as an African free name* in the late 1960s. Sometimes when I sign my Mudcat posts I will add "Ms" or "Sista" to my name because a number of people here who are unfamiliar with the name "Azizi" and who have never seen me have mistaken me for a male. * "African free names" was the term used in the late 1960s and 1970s to refer to Arabic and traditional African first names and-less frequently-last names that African Americans {and possibly other Black people} adopted in place of their European or Hebrew birth names. These birth names were called "slave names". To cite a well known example, heavyweight boxing champion Cassius Clay changed his name to "Muhammad Al" when he converted to Islam. However, for many African Americans like myself who were given or who self-selected new names, this change had nothing to do with religious conversion. Instead it had much to do with honoring our African heritage. Besides, I welcomed the opportunity to change my name because I didn't think that my birth name fit me anymore. What was that name?? I'm not telling. |
