Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: wysiwyg Date: 08 Feb 10 - 11:21 PM Yew fokes are two much. Spinning a nice lady's head all around and around and around like this. I actually tried to READ and UNDERSTAND this thread. Y'oughtta be ashamed, especially that Kennedy Man-- you know who you are. However, I do still "seem" to know this much: 1. Ah is not gettin' digital with no damn pig. AH don;t care even who it is or who it belongs to or if it's daid or kickin. 2. Ah has a shelf-ful of vinyl looking for a good home. If only a previous storaging friend had not let the jackets get moldy, and the relatively unscathed vinyl get dusty. But they are free to a good home, as many of the titles as are wanted, and if I knew what was wanted it would be worth my time to crawl into the place where they lie, unplayed, these many years. (2a. Ah is not even gonna look in that shelf unless somebuddy asks me reel nice to go see if their pertickler gotta-haves are in there. They're in a cold, lonely spot someone else controls, where I'd have to lay me down on a cold icy floor I cannot get up from by myself, and Ah is not kissin' THAT room's boss's ass jes' for "fun", nor goin' digital with it nohow, neither! I jes' cain't this week!!!) 3. Ah haz a nearby friend with a whole, hoarded, houseful of vinyl Ah bet is in pristine condition. If I knew what stellar, vinylized artists anyone just HAD to have, I could prolly git him to part with a few, in a good cause. 4. Mudcat has gone way past my ability to follow what the HELL most of yew are tawkin about, most of this pertickler winter-- WhatEVer! I love yew all ANYWAY, so there! (4a. Seamus, I can goddamn well gush whenever I please, so THERE! to YOU!) :~) ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: Ross Campbell Date: 08 Feb 10 - 08:05 PM Serious learning curve too - people who used to drive these machines would have put their user-friendliness up there with driving a 747 without electronic assistance - very much a hands-on process, with very little scope for electro-mechanical equivalents of the fixes and aids available in the digital realm. Good luck! Ross |

Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: Melissa Date: 05 Feb 10 - 10:46 PM ha..sort of like Polaroidville in the Stephen King story called 'Sundog' (or something like that) |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: CarolC Date: 05 Feb 10 - 10:42 PM Hmm... I actually like the taste of distilled as compared to most tap water, but I think I get your meaning. I guess I would use a cartoon like Yogi Bear, as compared to a Monet painting. This is just in regard to the flatness, etc of it and not the quality of the work that is being reproduced in sound. |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: Melissa Date: 05 Feb 10 - 09:58 PM Sort of like the difference between water and distilled water, Carol? |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: CarolC Date: 05 Feb 10 - 09:52 PM I feel like I might know what you're talking about, Melissa, because I experience things in my ear that I wouldn't describe as sound, either, but I also don't know how they might be described. One thing that I do use to describe how I experience analog (real analog), is texture and having air or an atmosphere. To me, digital is flat, thin, and airless, and analog has texture, depth, and air. |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: Melissa Date: 05 Feb 10 - 09:31 PM no, Carol..I would have called that 'the way it feels' in my ear and I guess saying 'taste' is kind of weird but it's what I mean--I almost said 'flavor'..but that didn't seem accurate at the time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: CarolC Date: 05 Feb 10 - 09:23 PM When you say, "the way it tastes to my ear", are you talking about the way the vibrations feel in your ear? |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: Melissa Date: 05 Feb 10 - 09:21 PM leeneia-When I was a kid, tin-cone jingles were made from Skoal lids. I hear a difference in sound between the two but it's more like the way it tastes to my ear than something I'd try to describe as a Sound thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: CarolC Date: 05 Feb 10 - 09:16 PM My hearing is acute also, and I definitely hear a difference. But maybe I was listening to stuff that was recorded before they started digitizing even the stuff that ended up on vinyl when I made my comparisons. |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: mousethief Date: 05 Feb 10 - 11:37 AM Is this a case of The Emperor's New Clothes? I think so. Although my hearing is far from acute. I think people miss the crackle and hum. Now I have also heard there is a difference between a solid state and a tube-fired amplifier. But I've never heard the latter so I am not in a position to judge. O..O =o= |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 05 Feb 10 - 11:32 AM "I went to a PowWow where one of the dancers had a cd in the center of his bustle.. " That's great, Melissa. A wonderful idea! I used to work in a fabric store, and one day a mother and son came in because he had been told to make 'an Indian costume.' He listened, fascinated, as I told him about the old pow-wow costumes with 'jingles' made from the tops of cans and rattles made from aluminum salt shakers. Now CD's undergo transmogrification. ============ I don't sense any difference between the sound quality of vinyl and of CD's. And my hearing is acute. Is this a case of The Emperor's New Clothes? |

Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 04 Feb 10 - 11:31 PM 78s are harder to make into bowls, Kat. They usually break into arrowheads. |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: katlaughing Date: 04 Feb 10 - 11:27 PM Some people actually hang them in fruit trees around here to ward off birds. I think mostly in cherry trees, but I couldn't swear to it. I made a couple of those bowls when I was a kid. One of them was see-through red. Mom made sure I didn't use anything that was special. We still have a lot of 78s, as does my sister. |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 04 Feb 10 - 11:11 PM CDs as coasters, hhmm? Skeet? Rearview mirror suncatchers? If you put scotch tape over the hole, can you record over them, as with cassettes? Tape them over the hole of an acoustic guitar so there's no feedback. Elton John sunglasses? Any other ideas? |

Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: GUEST,Jonny Sunshine Date: 04 Feb 10 - 11:06 AM There are of course numerous plugins for music producers that are designed to make pristine digital audio sound like vinyl, such as Steinberg's Grungelizer which has an interface allowing you to add different levels of surface noise (at 33/45/78 rpm), mains hum (50 or 60hz), wear on the stylus and recording date (1900-present) |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: Gurney Date: 04 Feb 10 - 03:34 AM There's a thought! Why convert CDs to vinyl when you could download MP3s and turn them into plant-pot holders! Couldn't be any harder than sandpapering a double-Bass into a violin. Best idea yet! How about converting a Lagerphone into 12 dozen Guinness? What could possibly go wrong? |
Subject: RE: BS: Convert CDs to Vinyl? From: eddie1 Date: 04 Feb 10 - 02:21 AM The wonderful by-product of this exercise is that after the conversion of CDs to LPs, 45s or, preferrably, 78s, one is left with an almost endless store of coasters for parties, BBQs etc. CDs were originally coasters until someone thought, "Let's put music on these!" This from a man who, many many years ago was walking in the park with a girlfriend when she told him "My Mum has some 78s of a cowboy singer called Jimmy Rodgers!" After rushing home I discovered she had four which had all been converted into flowerpot holders!!!!! Eddie |
