They fly off with chunks of flesh. Down here in Texas it's biting flies, mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggars. Not to mention the passive stuff like poison ivy (of which I have a generous smear on my right ankle, two weeks into the itchy ordeal). SRS |

Black Flies, Buzzin' 'Round My Head
The annual attack of biting flies started this year in my part of Indiana right on schedule on June 2. Hoosiers call them deer flies, and they look like little brown stealth bombers, but otherwise they have all the characteristics of the black flies of your article ("You Don't Bother Me, Black Fly, Say Fans of "Jaws on Wings'," page one, June 9).
I've done considerable research on how to control these flies but have come up empty-handed except for one innovative approach developed by a clever guy in Michigan. He determined that these flies sense moving objects and usually attack the high, backside of the victim. Based on this inteligence, he came up with a patch that is sticky on both sides and is placed on the back of a cap. Flies attack the cap and stick to the parch. On my 220 yard morning walk to get the Journal at my mailbox, the patch collects 20 to 40 flies that otherwise would be after me and my dogs. It doesn't solve the problem but every bit helps. Jus' today I was messin' with a hose reeler-upper an' come on aspider that looked like it had come from an alien planet so I run back to the house to find a jar to catch it and y the time I got back, it had disappeared ..... But it had like a pearl sized thing it was carryin'nder it (maybe an egg sack) and had eyes like the crabs with them periscopes in the sub-marine movies.... Weirdest lookin; spider Iz ever see'd.... A nasty import from Europe, it has nasty toxic, barbed hairs that cause an excruciating rash. Not content to keep it's nasty hairs to itself, it sheds them and they waft lightly on the breeze, landing on poor innocent park rangers, who then break out in welts to rival blackfly bites. Oh, and said hairs, if inhaled by people with asthma or emphysema, also cause respitory distress. Yay! Let's hear the it for the insect world!!!! |

Now, you can buy the expensive ones, like the Helly-Hansen, or go cheapo like me. BUT, if you get the cheap ones, read the fine print. If it doesn't say something about flame retardant, be careful around the campfire and, I speak through personal experience, around the BBQ. I believe the technical term for the rate of burn of these jackets is "whoosh". |
