The Weather Network Bug Report for Moncton, New Brunswick (amazing! and comical if you live here)

Species      August 21    22    23    24    25      26

Black Flies Not In Season

Mosquitoes   Medium Medium Not likely Medium High Medium

Deer Flies   High Medium Not likely Medium Medium Not In Season

Stables Flies    Not Native

Horse Flies High   Medium Not likely Medium Medium Not In Season

No-see-ums    Not In Season

The "Not In Season"s are hilarious! The lack of skeeters on Sunday nearly made me spill my tea... I guess they don't do well in windy weather (Hurricane Bill approacheth).

I dunno, Mr. Gargoyle--I grew up in the soggy Pacific Northwest and spent my share of time in the mountains and by lakes and rivers swatting mosquitoes, little black flies, and when I was real unlucky, horseflies. They fly off with chunks of flesh.

Down here in Texas it's biting flies, mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggars. Not to mention the passive stuff like poison ivy (of which I have a generous smear on my right ankle, two weeks into the itchy ordeal).

Ms. Sage - I doubt that you have ever been where the blacks and skeeters are so thick you inhale them and anything that flies injects poison.

Wall Street Journal - Opinion - Letters to the Editor - p.A15, Monday, June 27, 2005

Black Flies, Buzzin' 'Round My Head

The annual attack of biting flies started this year in my part of Indiana right on schedule on June 2. Hoosiers call them deer flies, and they look like little brown stealth bombers, but otherwise they have all the characteristics of the black flies of your article ("You Don't Bother Me, Black Fly, Say Fans of "Jaws on Wings'," page one, June 9).

I've done considerable research on how to control these flies but have come up empty-handed except for one innovative approach developed by a clever guy in Michigan. He determined that these flies sense moving objects and usually attack the high, backside of the victim. Based on this inteligence, he came up with a patch that is sticky on both sides and is placed on the back of a cap. Flies attack the cap and stick to the parch. On my 220 yard morning walk to get the Journal at my mailbox, the patch collects 20 to 40 flies that otherwise would be after me and my dogs. It doesn't solve the problem but every bit helps.

Thomas B. Tucker
Terre Haute, Ind.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Okay, jpk, you start with the most toxic bug killer you can find, and hope it doesn't cause any neurological problems. I'll start with the milder one and hope it works against mosquitoes. If it doesn't, I can choose to switch over to some DEET mixture. But if my organic one works, I'm a lot better off.

The little buggers were ravenous at Old Songs. They don't usually bother me, but this time they did. They nearly carried Jacqui off, and they must have been very poor and very hungry. When I saw them lining up with food stamps, I retired to the camper.

CBC Article about DEET concerns.

Organic is better. Read this and this information.

Here's the logic behind the not using DEET or broadcast spraying pesticides against mosquitoes.

The same idiots who want to spray the whole world and kill the beneficial bugs along with the mosquitoes are the ones who are pushing DEET.

DEET. You have to look hard to get past all of the commercial pushers of DEET at the top of the page of search results.

In the table at the above link: can be harmful to humans:

    Measured toxicity

The Working Group has decided that there are sufficient toxicity data on the substance and/or its degradation products (e.g. hydrolysis) in order to classify or not classify.

The subst. has been considered in order to see if it is readily degradable or not according to existing criteria. Sufficient data may not always have been precented and the substance is in those cases by default considered as not readily degradable.

The substance has been considered in order to see if it is bioaccumulative or not according to existing criteria. The substance is considered as potentially bioaccumulative if log POW >= 3.0 (unless the experimentally determined BCF <= 100).

Can be harmful in the environment:

Your DEET needs to be at least 70% (military surplus carry it this strong also Canada) - smear liberaly twice a day - exposed skin and all clothing.

It is not the cigar smoke that keeps them away - it is the nicotine in the blood - smoke several a day - and/or chew RedMan.

"Old Woodsman" is for the tourists - barbeque sause for fresh meat.

Vitamine B, Garlic, non-sugar diet, are all useless.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

gnu, the one at Costco, if I'm recalling the price correctly is $100 cheaper than the one at Canadian Tire and if memory serves it appears to be the same model too.

Only in Canada would a prospective bride choose to sign on to the bridal gift registry at Canadian Tire. I think my youngest daughter, who's getting married in a couple of weeks, requested a cabinet makers level, amongst other odd things. LOL

I have another nasty bug to add to this thread. The Brown-tail Moth caterpillar. A nasty import from Europe, it has nasty toxic, barbed hairs that cause an excruciating rash. Not content to keep it's nasty hairs to itself, it sheds them and they waft lightly on the breeze, landing on poor innocent park rangers, who then break out in welts to rival blackfly bites. Oh, and said hairs, if inhaled by people with asthma or emphysema, also cause respitory distress. Yay! Let's hear the it for the insect world!!!!

You did the right thing. Spiders can nest in the burner tubes of your BBQ and cause a propane buildup, resulting in a fire or even an explosion. Of course, a spider that big wouldn't be able to get into those tubes... so, make sure you have a full mug of beer with you when you open your BBQ. Then, if necessary, you can douse the bastard with beer and momentarily immobilize it while your fire up the Barby and roast it's hairy little ass.

Long time past I was sitting in my back yard by a canyon in southern California. Just waking up with coffee and cigarette in hand. Then, cool as a cucumber, strutting as bad as any bad ass, and ugly as any horror movie monster, this goddamned tarantula strutted slowly past my feet. Being new to the Southlands, I had no clue that tarantulas lived in the U.S. When I convinced myself that it was not a dream, I did the only thing I could do, which was to smash the thing. No way I could ever sleep in that house again, otherwise. Quickly learned that I had committed a major ecological no-no. Oh, well.

Little bit of drift there.

ranger1... missed your post about the menu. Good one! No. Just a stroke of luck that I had my Type "M" fire extinguisher in my right hand at the time. My left sleeve "went up" but I deftly and swiftly dumped the "M"ug of Bud on it. Thank goodness I had a sweat shirt on with the wrist of the sweatshit beyond the wrist of the bug jacket. And, man, did the works come off in a hurry. One handed pull from the nape of the neck and there I was, bare from the waist up. And the skeeters thought they were in heaven... little bastards wouldn't give me a break.

So, the fire safety tip of the day is: Always keep your beer mug full.

Hey, maybe I can get a gnu suit and do safety commercials... "Only you can prevent fur fires."

Then there's the ticks. The pea-sized one that bloat up to marble-sized that you find on your legs and back after walking through our lovely Maine fields. Then there's the pinhead ones, the Lymn disease deer ticks that you really don't want to have nibbling you.

My father was a great protector of our salt water marsh mosquitoes. He reasoned that they were a major food supply for birds and fish and we should just get used to them rather than killing them and everything else by aerial spraying. You know, he had a point, and millions of tiny friends.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Sent email to the producer... right next door in Maine. Should soon know if I can purchase locally.

BTW... an alert for youse what have "bug jackets". I bought a bunch of these on sale, cheap. Now, you can buy the expensive ones, like the Helly-Hansen, or go cheapo like me. BUT, if you get the cheap ones, read the fine print. If it doesn't say something about flame retardant, be careful around the campfire and, I speak through personal experience, around the BBQ. I believe the technical term for the rate of burn of these jackets is "whoosh".
