It must be remembered that comedians of this ilk (it's that word again!) learned their comedic skills before movies were ever thought of, on the stage in live performances, sort of like folk msusos... :-)

Groucho had a good radio career, he was a fast wit with words in a live situation.

Also many comedians of this period made a living for 30 years with about 20 mins of material: along came a visual medium and sucked their life work away in one go, so they had to keep on making things up without the ability to hone it over years.

Very few live comedians were able to make a successful transition to the movies.

The best movie Woddy Allen ever made was that thing where he was an ant...

I won't disagree with those who declare the greatness of the stooges. But I was a Marx Brothers fan first last and always. I'll never forgot possibly my first Marx Bros. Movie: A Night At the Opera seen in London with hundreds of hysterical Brits.

"Why's he crying"

Ron has hit on a sad truth, and that is that even the greatest comedians    do mostly bad movies. Martin and Lewis, who could be really, really, funny, never made a good movie--and Peter Sellers was only good thing in most of his movies--The Marx Brothers did a lot better than most, and WC Fields made a number of great movies--Woody Allen probably has done more really funny movies than anyone else, but his personal life spoils them for me--

As far as I know, the TV movie was the only project.   I'm not sure why he would do another film about them after creating this one.   It was better than most made-for-TV flicks because of a decent cast and a good script.

I'm not sure why everyone is comparing apples and oranges in this thread.   The Marx Brothers, Laurel & Hardy, and the Stooges all have their audience. Reading some of the remarks makes it seem like we have to choose one over the other.

The one problem I have with the Marx Brothers is that they made more than their share of bad films. A handful of gems, and a pile of trash. I guess that is the problem with most comedy teams.

I mentioned Sinatra merely as an aside to the fact that I get the impression that Grouch Marx was an outrageous asshole. I feel the same about Sinatra. Do I need to explain that further? ;-)

Ron, any more info on the TV movie? I'm not aware of it having reached Australia. My informant seemed to think that the project was ongoing, and that the TV movie may have been just a cheap tryout.

I somehow could not get it with the Marx Brothers. For one thing, I had the distinct impression that Groucho was most likely one of the most unpleasant @$$holes that ever lived...and this seemed to interfere with my enjoyment of him as a comedian. I always had that problem with Frank Sinatra too (although he didn't do comedy).

Dale (and others)- you were lucky with the eye-popping. I read (somewhere) about a boy who blinded his brother, and sobbed "It didn't hurt when the Three Stooges did it."

Still, I have fond memories of a dinner party where one squeezes on his (what? it's a flaky pastry thing filled with cream or something) - squirts another diner, who retaliates, and the battle is on. Does anyone remember this?

Uh, I think the Seinfeld era ended.

Mel Gibson already produced the movie. It was a rather decent TV movie about that aired a few years ago.   Michael Chiklis did a superb Curly.

If you have ever watched Mel Gibson movies, you may have noticed the use of 3 Stooges clips on the TVs (and his use of some of their material!). I have heard that he is working on a project to tell the real story of their life.

Eye pokes were big when I was a kid, but we were all well trained at the lightning fast defensive move, and I have to report that no children were ever hurt while practicing these or any of the other Martial Arts of Stoogedom.

Side track to a side track above ~~ I watch Harold Lloyd movies just to see one of my favorites, Jobyna Ralston.

Some humour dates and some doesn't. I've seen so little of the work of the 3 Stooges that I couldn't tell you whether they were rubbish or not. The Marx brothers, on the other hand, leave me cold, but that bit in Laurel & Hardy films where Stan Laurel's face crumples and he either bursts into tears, or looks like he's about to, is just ... priceless ... and wonderful - and cracks me up every time!

Who was the other guy who did a bunch of slapstick comedy films in the 30's and 40's? Not Chaplain...the other guy. I saw one where he was almost falling off a skyscraper, and a hapless black bellhop in uniform was trying to tell people, "Dey's a man hangin' on de side o' de buildin'...", but no one would listen to him.

(Blacks were depicted in a rather different manner in those days...)

Stan and Ollie had a beautiful chemistry stemming from their personal friendship. These were two men who sincerely cared for each other as friends and it came through in every two reeler they did. I think the best story I know is that even years after they had quit performing and Ollie had passed on, Stan Laurel still wrote L&H material all the time.

I first enjoyed the Stooges at the theatre as a kid.

Then as a teenager all my mates would congregate at someone's house on a Sunday arvo and watch the Stooges on TV.

Now I am enjoying them again because my son gets a big bang out of the videos. (Interestingly, my daughter isn't that much taken with them.)

Larry was a classically trained violinist, sidetracked by ragtime. An acid burn when he was 4 nearly caused amputation and later physical therapy led to a brief boxing career as a lightweight. He won his only pro fight under the name "Kid Roth". Moe and then-boss Ted Healy 'discovered" Larry performing with fiddle and dancing, kicking his heels up with his ass an inch from the floor and decided to ask him to join the act as a Stooge. They offered him $90 per week with a 10 dollar bonus if he'd give up the violin (according to Moe). When they went backstage to talk with him, he was just coming from a shower with his curly hair all astray. That's where his look came from.

It wasn't just the slapping and hitting with hammers that was so funny, they had rubber faces and great dialogue, excellent timing and reactions, and Moe had a list of nicknames for the other two 'boys' that split my sides every time he used them. Not laugh at The Stooges?? Gotta be a problem child.

Moe was known for having an incredible sense of accuracy. In all the years of eye-poking, Moe never once got anybody right in the eye, though he got close enough to make it look convincing.

My will probably kill me for repeating this story. She once told me that when she was a little girl, her and her friends would pretend they were married to the Three Stooges.   She always chose to be Mrs. Moe.   I've never been sure how to react to that.

My mom wouldn't let us watch the stooges when we were kids (a family of 3 boys). However, when her father came to visit, he liked to watch the stooges, so we could watch as long as grandpa was visiting. Later I came to appreciate the finer nuances of the stooges. I also dated someone who liked to watch the stooges with me. A great time, indeed.

As to fake, well, the famous "stooge slap" was a real slap--In his autobiography,Mousie Garner, who continued as a Stooge with Ted Healy when Howard/Fine/Howard went to Hollywood talked about the technique for rolling with the slap, and what it was like if you didn't see it coming--

Mousie was also a great comic piano player, and worked with Spike Jones---he was asked to take Curly's place in the movies but Jones wouldn't let him break his contract--he died this year, and was the last Stooge to go--

Sorry, but the 3 Stooges were the further thing from rubbish. There's the old observation that, generally, men think the Stooges were great and women think they were crap. I've seen many women laughing at the old shorts though.

I saw a episode once where Larry did a bellyflop off a high stepladder onto a hard floor. You try that one. they did their own stunts; the shorts had a very small budget---no stunt men.

Bit o' Trivia: It was Moe's satirical depiction of Hitler that was the first thing to come out of Hollywood to lampoon the dictator, even before Chaplin's film. So Moe Howard was on Hitler's Death List. Before that, Hollywood was too dependent on the European market to risk pissing anybody off over there.
