My real name is spelled Brien. Brían is what my friends in irish language class call me. The little mark above the "i" in my name is called a fada,so my name is pronounced BREE-un(don't forget to trill that "r"). Beidh mé ag caint libh aríst.

My name is Roland, but only relatives use that name nowadays... to the rest of the world I am ROLLO.

The reason being my faible for vikings, the team captain of my BLOODBOWL team of norse called Rollo the Red, (a very funny game, bloodbowl: a mixture of tabletop, chess and american football with fantasy monster miniatures!) my rowdy beard having red strains, and all in all it is quite descriptive...

for I am fat as a pig... and they say: Rollo, roll over! Har, har, har...

If anyone cares: Roland, comes from Ruotland, which means "Rules the Land" or King. Of course my parents chose this name after the great paladin of Charlemagne. When they told it my grandparents they said: "But you cannot give your son a dog´s name!" The big great mean ole watch dog from the farm next door was named Roland, too...

I'm a National Parks ranger and I sing chanteys. I recently found out that the ships fiddler was called the "monkey's orphan." Since I also play fiddle, I might have chosen that as my Mudcat name if I had known of that term then - but I've become accustomed to the "chanteyranger" name, and I rather like it, so it stays, at least for the time being.

I'm sure I've said this before, but here we go again!! :-)

My real name's Kathryn, which can be shortened to Kat. I used to be in a band called Fireboots. I took the Fire from the band's name, changed the spelling of my name so it ended up as my favourite animal, put the two together and ended up with Firecat.
I also use the name Bodhranfire, but not on the 'cat. This comes from the band, and the fact that I play bodhran.

I helped start an open-mic night at my UU congregation 7 years ago that eventually became known as the Blackcat Cafe - Our first one that we held was on a Friday the 13th, hence the conenction with Blackcat.

No, I don't tend any cats, even black ones, but I am attached to several friends' cats. I also love Hallowe'en & Samhain so there's a bit of a connection there.

I'm also known as Top Cat because one of my friends has called me TC (my ititials - Tom Cook) and someone eventually made the old connection to Top Cat. pax yall

It was originally intended by my eldest brother that he should have a little baby sister as he already had a little baby brother.

Thunderbirds ( the puppet series ) had just come out in England and seeing as how our family name is the same as Lady Penelope Creighton WARD's , he thought that should be my name.

The whole thing, he meant.

They had to whittle him down to just Penelope, but he usually calls me 'madam' when he's annoyed.

I just thank the powers that be that I wasn't a boy as I was going to be called Parker ( the butler ) otherwise.

So when I saw that there was already a Penny on the 'cat', I thought I may as well get some mileage out of my name.

Technically I'm named after my dad, Michael (Michelle) However I wish they had actually called me Michael as you have no idea how many girls from north London were christened Michelle that year! Also you have no idea how girls from north London can mangle the name. Sheesh!

I don't know when Jack, (who is an old friend) changed his name. The story is really about when I changed MY name. AND IT WAS FOR THE SAME REASON THAT JACK CHANGED HIS. JUST ASK HIM. Let's see, 1946, I was 17 years old. I DISTINCTLY remember Jack getting raked over the coals at a meeting of club "Folksay" when he said he was thinking of changing his name, and why. THAT'S when I decided to change my name. It wasn't Gibson, it was Joey Gordon (?) and later on Gibson. Much later on. AND WHAT THE HELLS THE DIFFERENCE ANYWAY/ IT WAS 55 YEARS AGO. THAT'S PROBABLY A LONGER TIME THAN YOU HAVE BEEN IN EXISTANCE.

Jim is what my parents called me; James is what by birth cirtificate says. Krause comes from some German speaking fella that had curly hair. Krause in German=Curly in English. In Low Saxon it is Krüse, in Dutch it is Kroese. And oddly enough, my hair is rather curly. So the name fits.

When I started out, I called myself Soddy, after the earth houses which were made of sod that the early settlers of the prairies in the US built. Then I realized that the word Sod means something entirely different to speakers of British English. Taking a tip from a couple of other 'catters, I decided to use my real name. Nicnames never seemed to stick to me anyways.

I originally used Chantywrassler as a Mudcat nick, (which is Glasgow slang for a BSer, or someone who may be fo dubious integtrity - deriving from the term "chanty" - which means a chamber pot ) but I only visited infrequently, and when I started coming around more often, I discovered Chantyranger was posting . I thought that my use of the name could be open to misinterpretation..

SO...

I chose another, based on the Scottish expression "I'm that hungry I could eat a scabby dug (dog)"

Playing 3/2 hornpipes and Cotswold morris in "Irish" sessions in Cambridge marks a man out as being not-terribly celtic. Ironic really, because very few actual Irish people attend that session anyway - most of us are English!

My ma was overly immersed in her New England timestream, and dragged a batch of handles out of the old Testament for me and my sibs in the best Plymouth tradition. It served me in good stead and I saw no reason to cover it with another. One reason I enjoy it is that I am hardly ever confused with someone else because of our names, except that guy who makes chocolate chip cookies,. When I was smaller, of course, I had to put up with jokers who had misplaced Andy Warhol, but then he died, and with people looking for sapphires and strange king-fisher birds, but I could usually provide them with an appropriate destination.

I also used my dog's name, Hawker. He was named after an eccentric but rather well known vicar of a little Cornish village called Morwenstow. He (the vicar, not the dog *BG*) is famed for writing 'The song of the Western Men' which has been adopted as the Cornish National Anthem, he also wrote some beautiful poetry, loved animals and rescued shipwrecked sailors - sort of chap I would loved to have known, had we lived in the same time bracket...........

With all due respect to the person who wrote the following, it is not a true story.

"Actually, my name is really, Joseph Paul Katzberg. My friend Elliot Adnapoz, and I both decided about the same time, that in 1946, no one wanted to hear the kind of music we wanted to sing by a couple of guys named AdnapoZ and Katzberg, so he adopted a stage name, as I did. He became, "Ramblin' Jack Elliot" and I became "Stumblin" Joe Gibson."

In 1946, Eliott Charles Adnopoz was only 15 years old. In 1948, he changed his name to Buck Elliott when he decided he wanted to be a rodeo cowboy. Hanging around the rodeo, he began to play cowboy songs and soon realized that he'd be less banged up as a musician than as a rodeo cowboy.

He says that around 1950 or 1951, he changed his name from Buck Elliott to Jack Elliott and that Odetta's mother named him Ramblin' Jack around 1954.

With Jack's cooperation, I am currently writing his biography. We're hoping that it will ready for publication in 2002.

Partially pertains to the Phil Ochs influence in most of my music (most people online call me Phil or Phili). Filibuster (sans pun) means pirate or adventurer as well, and plays out nicely with my overly romantic image of myself. You could also take it as that I pirate Phil Ochs songs (as I can't afford the big 70 dollar collections, and as I didn't come along earlier enough to snag ALL of his albums in LP form, and all the single CD collections just have his famous stuff...).

SO JODY.......What I seem to be missing is the Cranky Yankee part, but I may have missed it somewhere. Although I generally am known to have the staying power of the smell of a dead skunk on a moist summer night, I seem to have gotten lost in your treatise somewhere in the the Silurian division of the Paleozoic era, although perhaps I went astray earlier in the Devonian. I bravely stumbled on though and was finally able to contrive the true meaning in paragraph 37 of Chapter 91, Book 2, which seems to be, "Never let your third cousin Hector mate with an Alpenhorn."

Later on I just skimmed, which is my natural tendency when encumbered by a convoluted thesis in which I have only marginal interest such as the works of Soren Kierkegaard or a performance by "Up with People." I do want to thank you for your efforts in addressing this topic. It's reminiscent of stories I used to hear from an Albanian hat blocker who'd fought in the Crimea, unfortunately, after the war had ended. Sit back and know you have done a fine job and when the Insanevac Chopper arrives it will transport you to the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed where a tiple and noseflute await you. continued from previous post, because AOL was about to kick me off line.

Martin wanted $1,600 to repair my guitar which had been stepped on by a drunk woman with two wooden legs, at a party. (write a song about this) Their collective noses were out of joint because (ugh)someone else had worked on the guitar previously. (me and Al Lies, a "world class Luthier" who lives in Tiverton, Rhode Island) They also were miffed, (By the tone of the appraisal and stimate) because "Someoneon" had carved the name "Jody" on the guitar's Head. Yes, someone had, a wood cutter and calligrapher with a worldwide reputation, ME. It isn't the carving that's difficult, it's "Knowing where to put the letters". I've seen many a Multi thousand dollar Martin with fancy inlay, where the name "Martin" was woefully unballanced. A friend has a Martin D-43 (He says) that he bought in 1950, and the name "Martin" is pitifully lettered, though the inlaying is good. So much for their objections. They wanted to put a new top on my guitar (Which would have meant a DIFFERENT guitar) the top and sounding board is where all the tone comes from, the back and sides resonate this tone. Futhermore, the estimator wanted to pput new sidesw on the guitar. IT IS POSSIBLE, THOUGH NOT CERTAIN, THAT THE GUY WANTED THE BRAZILLIAN ROSEWOOD. I told them to send the guitar back. I took it to Al Leis who put everything back together, And replaced nothing. He charged me $150.00. Some bargain, Huh? It sounded just like it had before the accident, which is "terriffic". The story doesn't end here. I was out at Paul Geremiah's apartment, one day, and I told him my sad story. (He plays a Gibson) Now this man dearly loves guitars, all guitars, you can tell by the way he plays them. He asked me to let him check it over to see if there was anything else that needed doing. (He'll do this to YOUR guitar too if he has a chance to) He stuck a mirror and an automobile "points" feeler guage inside, found a strut that was slightly loose, glued it back in tightly, and the old girl sounded better than I had ever heard it before. I knew that this experience with the Martin Co. was going to come back and bite them on the ass, someday, and here it is.

back to the subject at hand, again,. It could have been a lot worse, the name thing that is. What if I had been playing a "Gretsch" or a "Yamaha". I could have been "Jody Kalamazoo" also (also made by Gibson). The nam cjange from Joe to Jody was because I was woking with a Hillbilly group (C&W hadn't been invented yet) Headed by a fine singer named "Randy Wood" who's fiddler, Gene Merrits, had been calling me "Jody" for some time, and another singer named Joe Gibson was well known around the New Jersey area.(This was not "Joe D. Gibson" who recorded "Good Morning Captain. That one was me) So I started using the name "Jody Gibson". My stupid EX Manager didn't think Jody was a proper name for his ace hillbilly, so he had them put the name, Joe D. Gibson on the record label. All my English records (Parlophone) from 1959 said, "Jody Gibson with the Muleskinners". George Martin knew better than my stupid EX Manager.

My Wife, the ever lovely, "Scintillating", Donna (Ma Fazoo to you lot) has just started calling me "King Nebuchadnezzer" because I do Bable on (Babylon), so I'll close this long song and dance.

"JODY" is the American spelling of GEORDIE, Which is diminutive for George, in the U.K.

iIn Geordie land (Newcastle upon Tyne) Northumbria. SO I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPELL As I was saying before I got longwinded, In Geordieland, Geordie is pronounced, "JODY". So says that great Blues Singer and guitarist, Louis Killen (yeah, yeah, I know, I know, but, he is also one Hell of a blues singer. If you doubt this, next time you and Louis cross paths, ask him to sing some "blues", and tell him, "Jody sent me".

Louis Killen, God bless him, was my inspiration and mentor for my introduction to nautical Folk Music. After I met Louis, I spent many a day on sailing ships learning how to sail and later, learning how to be a genuine chanteyman.

I think it's rather odd that so many couples are naming their female offspring, "George", as in "Jody Forster"

I play a Martin D-28, BUT, it was made in 1964 when C.F. Martin III was president of the company, and they still knew how to make "the best guitars, mandolins, ukeleles and tipples". One instrument made by one person and of Brazillian Rosewood". I also play a Gibson J-30, which is a fine sounding guitar. I bought it, in desperation, when Martin wanted $1,600 to repair my guitar

When Geoff and I got together everyone started referring to me as Mrs Duck which I hated as it denied my own personality but now we've been together a while I think I've made my stamp on the people we meet and am proud to be Mrs Duck!! So why is Geoff called Geoff the duck? B*****ed if I know I thought everyone had one in their tankard!!

"Charley Noble" is the customary naurical term for the galley smokestake aboard ship. My real name is Charlie and among other things I sing a lot of nautical songs. Several Mudcatters have "smoked" this one.
