Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: Peace Date: 16 Dec 03 - 12:09 AM My good man, Too true. One must keep in mind that those in steerage may suffer a bit, but that is only apt. My Dada worked very hard to give me this lifestyle. He earned it on the backs of those less fortunate than I, but remember Mark Twain's statement that God must have loved the poor because he made so MANY of them! Let that suffice, what? |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: GUEST,Winston Wellington-Jones Date: 15 Dec 03 - 11:53 PM Other people are shite. And life? Life is a fat, stupid, pompous, ruddy face waiting for me to introduce it to my gloved fist. Life is good as far as I'm concerned, particularly for the gentleman of leisure who has plenty of disposable income and a fast luxury motor vehicle or two. - Winston Wellington-Jones |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: Amos Date: 15 Dec 03 - 12:25 PM Ahh, cheers, Harvey!! Fair enough. I guess we're all entitled to our own version of being shallow, eh?? :>) I should withdraw my sarcasms, huh? It just puzzles the hell out of me. Now a lot of American "humor" in modern spew -- I mean media -- is also pretty trashy, I would say. But live and let live -- no one is paying me to be a cultural critic, eh? ">) A |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: harvey andrews Date: 15 Dec 03 - 12:04 PM Amos..I feel exactly the same about modern American humour! That's why british comedy shows don't translate to America. I can't wait to see what's done to the wonderful "The Office". I can watch the gurning Carey or what's called movie comedy in the U.S. etc, etc and not raise a titter. As Hurricane Higgins once aptly said; "It's as entertaining as watching your stools float" Having also read the gibberish about Tolkien being posted at the moment, which did make me laugh out loud....all these adults taking these funny names seriously...I realise there are many planets out there I'll never visit, and that many others won't be visiting mine! (Ducks to avoid what will be flung!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: Amos Date: 15 Dec 03 - 11:59 AM The question in my mind is whether anything can be done to add any depth, culture, or subtlety to these meretricious trivialities posing as humour? A |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 15 Dec 03 - 11:22 AM LH Why is it that the British insist on misspelling and mispronouncing common vulgarities? We don't! Now just go and Folk orf..;-) Cheers DtG (Hope you know I don't mean it!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 15 Dec 03 - 10:53 AM I say "shit". You say "shite". I say "really". You say "quite". You drive on the left. I drive on the right. It's not a big issue. No reason to fight. Now just go to bed. And turn out the light. Good night! |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: Mickey191 Date: 15 Dec 03 - 10:21 AM Amos, You have expressed my sentiments exactly. It seems to be an exclusionary tactic, which requires a field guide. Then upon consideration, it's too juvenile to ponder. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: mooman Date: 15 Dec 03 - 10:17 AM Dear LH, There is a world of difference between s**t and shite. Anyway shite in my view is an Irish variant (c.f. gobshite) adopted enthusiastically by the English in recent times. Etymologist please...! Peace moo |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: mooman Date: 15 Dec 03 - 10:12 AM Dear Greg, I would rather risk Oaklet's whelks anyday than have 13 nautili, octopi, squid or cuttlefish shuffling down or up any part of my alimentary canal. Unless tenderised, chopped and cooked in a nice garlicky sauce of course! Richard |
Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: Little Hawk Date: 15 Dec 03 - 10:00 AM No. It isn't. If you think it is, though, then your state of mind is shite. Why is it that the British insist on misspelling and mispronouncing common vulgarities? - LH |

Subject: RE: BS: Is Life Shite? From: *daylia* Date: 15 Dec 03 - 08:46 AM Ok, I'm curious .... does "shite" rhyme with "white"? OR, perhaps with "pretty"?? Hmm, could even be "flighty" .... Speaking of which ... when my piano students perform at festivals, recitals etc. they are expected to announce to the audience the name of their piece and who composed it. There are at least 2 composers whose names present a bit of a challenge --- J. Schytte and R. Fuchs. Certain renditions of these names are especially popular with pre-pubescent boys. Precious minutes out of half-hour lessons are often wasted, never to be retrieved, as they collapse on the piano bench howling, just considering the possibilities. It's fun, but it does make for a rather shite lesson (at least from my point of view) At the risk of drifting off-topic on this oh-so-serious thread, I'm wondering ... do any of you multi-national Catters know the correct pronunciation of those names? Thanks, daylia |
