Subject: RE: Who should I be booking? From: Bernard Date: 21 Nov 08 - 04:31 PM Umm... me! I don't own a Martin... but am considered to be 'quite good' on Accordion, English and Anglo concertinas, Guitar, 5-string Banjo, Mandolin and an assortment of other stuff. I also sing unaccompanied!! I've appeared at a few local clubs, but am looking to venture further afield... most of the artistes you've listed know me in case you need references. I recently was support for Chris While and Julie Matthews at Maghull, and have also supported Fairport Acoustic at Poynton Festival... and Martin Carthy, John Kirkpatrick, Vin Garbutt, Kerfuffle, Spiers and Boden, Witches of Elswick (to name but a few). Have you tried Geoff Higginbottom or Brian Preston? The Time Bandits are excellent... |

Subject: RE: Who should I be booking? From: Northerner Date: 21 Nov 08 - 11:34 AM I'd go along with Hissyfit. How about Sam Lee? He is a beautiful singer. He has been booked for Whitby Folk Week a few times. Being mentored by Stanley Robertson. Sam Lee is from London and runs the Magpie Folk Club. He works for EFDSS - you will get his email address from the EFDSS website. Up and coming. He is very working very hard to build his skills and expand his repertoire. I met him at Whitby and also on a voice workshop that we both attended run by Frankie Armstrong. |

Subject: RE: Who should I be booking? From: Nick Date: 20 Nov 08 - 08:36 AM Paul - they are excellent live. I'm particularly partial to their version of Bird on the Wire which isn't on a CD; Northern Tide is one of my favourite songs; and Sweet Minerva and and and... I have a CD somewhere that I recorded when they came to visit us in Flaxton (with Linda and Hazel's ok which Hazel has a copy of) - PM Hazel or Linda if it's ok with them to send some samples I can pop them on some webspace or get you a copy. If you still have any space over the weekend at your bash I might pop up at some point for a sing as there are a fair number of people I know there and could perhaps give you a copy. Perhaps you could PM me? Bit of luck they may do Both Sides of the Tweed now. I went to Hazel's birthday last year and she sang it with her sister (and Linda) and the rest of the pub and it was lovely. This is not a Hissyfit performance but it is Linda and Hazel singing at Hazels birthday in a pub in Beverley. Noisy and not a good recording but gives a slight idea. It's been posted on mudcat before so they hopefully won't mind. Don't make a negative decision on it but it gives an idea! http://www.esnips.com/doc/b8eeebb6-7342-45c3-aec8-59d86bd4eb43/brightmorning http://www.esnips.com/doc/3e8374ad-0ce6-4041-909f-7690173790bb/newsong |

Subject: RE: Who should I be booking? From: GUEST Date: 20 Nov 08 - 07:12 AM Second Megson, who have a pretty wide range. Debbie had classical singing training and has a pure voice, Stu has a punk background. Some traditional material and their own songs. Saw them at The Old Down in Somerset, but they're from Teesside. I do recommend David and Issy Emeney especially with Kate Riaz (cellist) who I also saw at the Old Down on their own and as support act for The Devil's Interval. They live in Cheddar and usually perform in the south west and east but can get about - I see from their giglist they're in the north east in a year's time, and they were at Ryburn 3 Step in Yorkshire earlier this year. They should hit your buttons - mostly traditional stuff but also their own material in a traditional style. All the songs on their Myspace page are original except Turpin the Blade. Listen esp to "The Skies Turned Grey" there, a haunting song about the mighty men of Whitehall disposing of animals during foot and mouth: "Born in the morning/Condemned by the evening/They led the lambs to slaughter/And the skies turned grey". People might have heard John Kirkpatrick doing this. Issy is a melodeon tutor and some of their pieces are tunes only. While I am shilling for local bands, I like Dragonsfly based in Somerset, a Celtic/Eastern fusion band who also play schottisches (sp?) and French stuff. Also I second Tom Bliss, who is sometimes solo and sometimes with Tom Napper. I also like Kirsty McGee and Matt Martin but I haven't seen her/them live. All her own songs, I think, so not much traditional there, and she calls her self a hobopop artist so she might not be your thing, possibly a tad too much between-the-wars Americana-style sometimes. |

Subject: RE: Who should I be booking? From: My guru always said Date: 20 Nov 08 - 04:34 AM Hissyfit are just wonderful & would give a fabulous evening if you can pry them away from home!! Personal Favourites: Hissyfit Lynne Heraud & Pat Turner Capella Patti & Ned Moses & the Ref George Papavgeris (an absolute Must) Breezy Isambarde Vicki & Trefor Williams Les Sullivan Mary Humphreys & Anahata Marian Button Sylvia Watts No, it's no good the list is endless, there's so much talent around I could go on & on & still not mention everyone!!! |

Subject: RE: Who should I be booking? From: Richard Bridge Date: 19 Nov 08 - 06:56 PM Hmm. Cost is always relative. Here are some thoughts. Pint and Dale (might be expensive, some trad, some US, some own stuff, lovely sound with Hurdy Gurdy and make him bring his mandolin - oh, and his Goodall is the best guitar I have ever played) Jon Loomes (lovely Nic Jones/Carthyesque guitar, and also plays hurdy gurdy and almost anything else that will play a tune I hate people like that, and almost entirely English traditional arranged with verve) I see MGAS has put in her bid above. I suggest you accept. If you can pry her loose from the bowels of Kent, possibly the best (other than fully-pro) female renderer of unaccompanied English song, Marian Button - former winner of the Nats - get her NOW as (sorry Marian, I know I am not a gentleman) she gets no younger. A voice you will never forget. Also you will not forget the death toll and you may not smile or laugh until a year and a day have passed - many great tragedies in her repertoire. Ingrid and Barrie Temple. Probably need no introduction. Dame Patti Smith EPNS That wonderful young girl at the last Miskin - unaccompanied song made me cry 4 times in 20 minutes - Tori something (if Tori Amos is the famous one she was Tori Lang - or maybe vice versa). From Wales I think. Capella. From Kent. She a lady baritone, he a male tenor/countertenor, harmonies and countermelodies to DIE for. Unccompanied, some trad-ish some a bit jazz-ish or music hall-ish. For a small amount extra, get them with Kick the Cat (combined band called Catapella) and die laughing at some of the comedy songs. Deadly Lampshade - female-led singer-songwriter tribe got boosted from club tent to main stage at Ely a couple of years ago. She has a nice guitar she plays in Open G a lot. Our own Barden of England. Singer Songwriter, and greying, but plays a Fylde not a Martin. Wonderful alcohol-fuelled tenor voice, rich ringing and full. Mike Nicholson. A melodic baritone full of spice and chocolate (the voice, I mean) and a Collings short-scale (12-fret) dreadnaught that sings the harmonies at you. Peter Collins. Unaccompanied. Quite a lot of shanties and forebitters. A bass-baritone or bass. If Mike Nicholson is spice and chocolate, Peter is Death By Chocolate Pudding. If he asks for an alcohol rider, decline, he drinks wine by the pint (and knows a good one from a bad one). Dangerous Curves (but you know them). Pete Coe - I have no idea what he now costs but he is SO underrated. Nothing he can't do. No Worries do do some trad. He is a VERY good finger-style guitarist with a range of Martins that will buy most retirement bungalows, and a worthwhile singer, she sings harmony arranged or on the fly and plays a very useful bodhran (egg, etc). |

Some trad, some recently-written to sound like trad, including some by us, and anything else we enjoy singing. Always happy to discuss a sensible approach to fees. |
