Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Eric the Viking Date: 18 Apr 02 - 02:03 PM Yes, my hair still needs platting, any volunteers? Yes, I remember the feet talk. My second toe being long and sensuous(or something like that!) I remember. As for Skips, I thought, that they were beautiful, like a well ripened brie!! Noreen, you are quite right-you didn't kick Andy, I thought you might do it for Linda by proxy, so my apologies. Letty, this is really your chance to get a bike back for the Nederlands if Andy brings his! Jez, how are you getting there? NOT ON COBBLES KNEE I hope-watch him as you go through the dark tunnels!! Talking of Cobble, where is the old bugger? Wake up Brian!!! Obviously the excitement is begining to grow, as the date gets nearer-hence all the silly comments.2 WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Noreen Date: 18 Apr 02 - 09:02 AM My mother always told me that a lady never lifts her feet... I have other ways of attracting attention :0) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Skipjack K8 Date: 18 Apr 02 - 08:43 AM They grew so beautiful, and I so possessive, that after I gave them a good hiding in last year's Great North Run, they ran off with a younger, better looking body. They may have had some visual appeal, but real beauty is in the sole. Skipjack |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: MudGuard Date: 18 Apr 02 - 08:42 AM Noreen, I can't confirm that! I can only confirm that you did not (yet) kick me ;-) MudGuard/Andy |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Noreen Date: 18 Apr 02 - 08:26 AM Eric, I'm mortally offended! I never kicked anybody, and nor do I intend to do so- though I do remember we had an interesting conversation about feet on Wolfgang's sofa. (Are yours still beautiful, Skipjack?) Who's going to plait your hair, Eric? Hmmm? Looking forward to seeing you all. Noreen |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: MudGuard Date: 18 Apr 02 - 06:31 AM Letty, of course I was joking! Looking forward to seeing you again! MudGuard |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Skipjack K8 Date: 18 Apr 02 - 06:23 AM But you're Irish, Letty! Very erudite posting, madam; I salute your linguistic ability. Skipjack |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Letty Date: 18 Apr 02 - 05:09 AM MudGuard said: -Dutch is just a broken version of German. -German word for German is Deutsch - look at this: -DEUTSCH -so Dutch is German with some parts taken out of it... Ehm...I'm sure you were joking Mudguard, but still. :-)The Dutch word for 'Dutch' is 'Nederlands', don't believe the English language! And why else would the Germans have a separate word for our language (Niederländisch or Holländisch)? *grin* Here is the deal... Long ago, the Germanic languages developed into different directions: a Northern, Western and Eastern branch (Northern developed into what are now the Scandinavian languages, Eastern (Gothic) died out). The Western branch 'split' into a so-called Low German and High German branch (low and high being geographical terms here). From the high branch we get modern German and Yiddish. From the low branch we get English, Frisian, modern Low German (Plattdeutsch) and Dutch (and of course, Flemish and Afrikaans). So, to say that German and Dutch are related is fine, to say that they are the same is a bit silly. Ask anyone in the Netherlands who has to learn German (like me! Still trying...). As to mutual intelligibility, for me personally, standard Flemish is easy to understand, and written Flemish even is the same as Dutch. Frisian is OK when spoken slowly, so is Plattdeutsch when it's from the border area, and I can usually read Afrikaans (but spoken, it's rather difficult). English and German, however, I definitely had to learn in school. However, it looks like I will have to brush up on my French this time... Tiens!
Love, Letty |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: JeZeBeL Date: 17 Apr 02 - 06:43 PM I will come along with my french knowlage if anyone needs a hand.....although have been speaking spanish a lot recently......but I would like to try and learn a bit of the origional dialect....it would be interesting.. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: MudGuard Date: 17 Apr 02 - 02:55 PM Dutch is just a broken version of German. German word for German is Deutsch - look at this: D so Dutch is German with some parts taken out of it... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Eric the Viking Date: 17 Apr 02 - 02:22 PM eh-Andy, better watch out-Letty will kick you the same as Noreen and Linda at Llanstock |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: MudGuard Date: 17 Apr 02 - 06:57 AM Ok, so hopefully my bits of French will help me... There is no danger of me talking Dutch to anyone as I do not speak that language (if you can call it a language). See you soon! MudGuard/Andreas |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: mooman Date: 17 Apr 02 - 06:40 AM Andreas, P.S. In "The Marolles" district of Brussels many people still speak the local dialect "Le Brusselaire" which defies real description. It is almost all about being drunk and there is a whole page devoted to it on the website link above! Best regards, mooman |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: mooman Date: 17 Apr 02 - 06:37 AM Dear Andreas, Les Bruxellois! Brussels is probably about 80-85% French speaking even though it sits in "Flemish territory" (their words!). In fact it is one of three autonomous regions in Belgium (Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels, each of which have their own ministers and parliaments!). Complicated country! Almost everyone in the population is some sort of politician! You will be understood in most (though not necessarily all) places if you speak English. Generally it is better not to attempt Dutch in Brussels (unless you know the area well and where the Flemish districts are) although it is officially bilingual and the majority French speakers will hardly ever attempt to speak or reply in Dutch. German will certainly be understood by many people but, in general English or French is your best bet. Looking forward to seeing you. Also hope you can make it Emma! Best regards, mooman |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: MudGuard Date: 17 Apr 02 - 05:13 AM mooman, one more question: do the brusselians (or how are they called in English) speak French or Dutch or both? Is there a chance for survival if I speak a little bit of English, an even smaller bit of French, no Dutch and lots of German? Jezebel, hope you can make it! 16 days to go... MudGuard/Andreas |

Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: mooman Date: 15 Apr 02 - 10:48 AM Dear Friends, The time of The EuroGathering is creeping up on us fast now. Just a couple of weeks to go. Most of the arrangements have been finalized now and I've posted a on the website at the above link. For those who still may be interested in coming, there is still time to get a cheap flight or train and we still have offers of floorspace for those on a budget. The following: website gives all the necessary details. So far the attendance and "interested" lists are as follows: Confirmed or likely to attend
Bill\Sables
+ several helper gnomes Possibles/interest previously expressed (but not confirmed)
Raggytash Specially for 'Spaw and MMario who have been so supportive in messages of goodwill (and for all other interested 'Catters!) we will post a running commentary as the weekends proceedings unfold. For those of an easily upset disposition this may include accounts of sheep and drunkenness! Looking forward to seeing everybody! All the best, mooman |

Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: mooman Date: 11 Apr 02 - 03:52 AM Oh P.S. Guest, rip. Sorry I didn't mean to ignore you. Your arse is most welcome at the Gathering provided it doesn't disrupt proceedings too much! Best regards, mooman |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: mooman Date: 11 Apr 02 - 03:46 AM Suzanne, By the end of this week, I hope to have all venues, etc. finalized and will then have the notion of a programme. I'll then let you know where the majority is likely to be found Saturday lunchtime. I don't like the thought of you eating alone! See you soon, Moo (Richard) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Susanne (skw) Date: 10 Apr 02 - 03:05 PM Richard, do you know where the Mudcat collective will be having lunch on Saturday? If I arrive and you're all out feeding I could follow you there instead of having to have a lonely meal behind the wheel ... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: GUEST,Roger O'K Date: 10 Apr 02 - 12:46 PM As I was saying before the thought of those frillies triggered a premature transmission, anyone travelling by Ryanair who cannot be accommodated in the Moomobile should note that from 15 April onward, the Ryanair shuttle from "Brussels South" (i.e. Charleroi on the French border) will deposit and collect passengers at the Gare du Midi, instead of near the Wild Geese pub. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: MMario Date: 10 Apr 02 - 12:44 PM I am beginning to suspect that Micca is in actuality a shy retiring , subdued and sedate representative of European Mudcatters. (at least in comparision)

Andy- for me n Skip it's normality, bring a biscuit tin-we'll show you!!. Richard-flights, Ryan Air ex Stanstead. Flight FR1012 arrive-08.40. Saturday 04. May As far as I know, only Bill, Greg and myself arriving, having not heard from Emma.I think we should have the following, if I guess right.Guitar, rucksack, Accordian, violin, bag, suitcase with banjo, maybe a couple of other bits n pieces-a transit will do for the pick up! Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: GUEST,Sledge Date: 09 Apr 02 - 06:27 AM I will have to send my apologies this time round, I'm unable to come due to an urgent request to help with child care duties (not mine btw) and it's allways hard to turn down a friend in need, Cheers and have a great time Sledge |

Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Skipjack K8 Date: 09 Apr 02 - 05:18 AM Hello, my Teutonic friend. It is a dungeons and dragons game I play with that Viking berk. I wear the frilly Mason's Apron, and have to guess whether the horsehair is on the inside or the outside. All perfectly normal, don't worry. Skipjack |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: MudGuard Date: 09 Apr 02 - 05:05 AM Now you've made me even more curious about the frillies. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: mooman Date: 09 Apr 02 - 04:06 AM Eric, I'm pretty sure I have your flight details but it won't hurt to send them again just in case. How many of you arriving on the RyanAir flight? If you'll fit in the car I'll come down to Brussels Charleroi and fetch you. Glad the hand's getting better. Floor space is sorted, but I don't think we have enough sleeping bags for everyone so if floor sleepers can bring their own that will be great. Andreas...get the frillies out of your mind...the thought is too horrible to contemplate! (...on the other hand...!) Also, apart from not being a sheep you're quite safe as you'll be a few hundred metres down the road! Can't wait meself! Moo |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: MudGuard Date: 09 Apr 02 - 03:54 AM Eric, what the ... are frillies? Glad to hear your hand is getting better (luckily I am not a sheep, otherwise I'd be afraid...) 24 days to go. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Eric the Viking Date: 08 Apr 02 - 03:53 PM Only 4 weeks to go, and 3 weekends before the gathering. I can't wait. Richard, did I mail you our flight details and arrival times? My hand is improving pretty well, now, though I am still having the physio. Anything we should know about stopping with you? Do we need sleeping bags etc? Jezebel-did you get sorted out? Skipjack-bring the frillies!! I'll bring my horsehair jockstrap. See you all soon Cheers Eric |
Subject: RE: Mudcat EuroGathering: final preparations From: Llanfair Date: 05 Apr 02 - 04:02 PM I only need to book my seat on eurostar, everything else is sorted. Can't wait to see you all. Cheers, Bron. |
