And patchwork and quilting too. Cutting up perfectly good fabric and sewing it back together again is probably no worse than cutting up perfectly good trees to make furniture or musical instruments, when you think of it! Man, but I am impressed!!! :D In between being a Mom, singing (which takes up a lot of my weekends), holding down a "real" job, and household day to day stuff I am lucky to get 5 hours of sleep a night. I haven't watched TV in more than a year (which, as I see it, is one of the perks). I remember when though. I used to like to do caligraphy, sketch, horseback ride, skate, and go unusual places on the spur of the moment. Unusual for me these days is the grocery store! ;D |

I'd like to get a collection of playable but pointless instruments like the Ukelin, Hawaiian Tremeloa, or other zitheresque instruments, all of which seem to have been manufactured in New Jersey. I also collect illustrated Victorian adventure novels. My favorite thing to collect is postcards that say "Greetings From..." and then the name of the place in large letters with pictures of the place inside the letters. Especially towns that seem to be too insignificant to merit having postcards. |

It's actually doors and door cases I go for. I used to make ships in bottles till a couple of years ago; thae last one broke inside the bottle after I'd glued it all up, and it wouldn't come out again! I was truying to be too delicate, I suppose ... I did a leatherwork course years ago (my home town Walsall is the saddlery and lorinery centre of England; lost of folks in the US buy our Western saddles), but I never kept it up--shame, it's a great medium to work in. I have always loved irises, but just had never thought about how new ones are created.
What happened was that I had gone to buy a few new varieties at a specialist horticultural place in central France (Cayeux) and, while I was there, saw a man walking around poking at different flowers with parts of other flowers and asked him what he was doing. He patiently explained that what he was doing was hybridizing and told me that anyone can have a go at it and showed me how to go about fertilising a flower. I am now into my fifth year of hybridizing and enjoyed the second major bloom of my new plants this year (takes three years from the time you fertilise the flower till you see the results of all your hard work). Believe me, there's a big thrill in seeing a unique new iris flower for the first time! cheers, Aux

I was looking at the model the salesperson gave me, after I said I wanted an older Pentax that was mostly if not entirely manual, and a guy was behind me in line listening politely to what she said and looking at the camera. I was aware he was there and turned and said "If you need her to help you go ahead, I am just looking at this." And he said "I have one of those, it's great," and then explained that one had to be careful about finding a supply for batteries as they did not make the old mercury batteries anymore and sometimes the new zinc ones made specially for old cameras were hard to find. By this time I was realizing this guy's face was very familiar. He also said he had actually come in there to get batteries for his Spotmatic! The saleswoman pointed to where he could get them in the next room. he was apparently not in too much of a hurry and we continued to chat about the camera. I explained that I had not owned a camera in several years and was replacing one that had been stolen and decided a vintage camera would be nice. He said his had also been stolen many years ago, but then he got another one just like it. Finally I had to ask "Hey you look so familiar, are you famous or something?" I expected him to say, "Yeah, I do the weather on Channel 5," or some such thing, and he said "Do you ever watch 60 MINUTES?" I looked right at him and said "Oh my gosh, you're Steve Kroft! I love your show, etc." I asked him what he was doing in Cambridge and he mentioned some meeting at Harvard. He then told me about he had bought his camera just before he went to Vietnam and used it over there. He went to get his batteries, at which point I decided I had to get this camera, the coincidence and significance of the encounter was just too much. The whole outfit cost about $300, more than I wanted to spend, but they threw in a $20 book on how to use vintage Pentax cameras for free. As Steve left the store he clapped me on the shoulder and said "Enjoy that camera! You'll love it." I said "Steve, you're the man!" He smiled and waved and left. :) It is a great camera. I do not fully know how to use it yet and my first experimental roll of film (shooting kittens in the sunlit porch) was not too successful, but the camera folk said they'd help me with it. There is no light reading instrument that is automatic (either that or the battery is not properly installed) so I need some help with that, too, as I am used to at least having something which offers what setting you should use with existing light conditions. Aux, I love irises (have some very old ones in my yard that I now leave behind; I think I shall dig some of them up and bring them to my new place) and never knew they could be hybridized. How interesting! Do they retain their fragarnce when this is done, or, like hybridized roses, do they lose most of that? Peg

It;s mostly in my feet at the moment, which limits mobility until the painkillers kick in! John in Hull, a potager garden is one belonging to someone who doesn't like planting veg. in neat rows. Each raised bed has a mixture of herbs, veg, and the odd flower. I can go and pick what I need for meals as it is ready. Lettuce and mange-tout peas in the polytunnel at the moment. And, maybe general competetive sports... I see the origin of the term as in India ca mid-1800s - sort of a Horsey game to play when you didn't have enough riders for a couple of Polo teams. Like, you'd ride flat tack on your horse, round a tight course. Object - pick up "souvenirs" from the ground - punt balls through hoops etc,,, Is a motor gymkhana roughly the same? Cheers - Sam
