Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Terry K Date: 03 Sep 00 - 12:52 AM If this works, here's a Map of Llanstock and here's an even bigger one If you enter the Post Code of the pub, village hall or whatever, the arrow will point exactly to the building, so Bron - we need some postcodes. Cheers, Terry |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 02 Sep 00 - 06:45 PM I'll be trying to get everything finalised from the middle of this month, and hopefully will have maps and stuff ready for distribution by then. I could do with knowing how many "performers" are coming, so that the "all day folk club" can run smoothly. Lastly, a lot of local people are looking forward to this event, amd the town council are talking about venues and stuff for a festival next year. Talk to you soon, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 02 Sep 00 - 04:15 AM Nah, the caravans won't hurt the trains at all!!! The railway people were having their end-of season bash last night, and it was music night as well, a good time was had by all, but my voice is a bit croaky this morning!!!! They are looking forward to "Llanstock" too. See you, Bron. |

Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 01 Sep 00 - 12:25 PM You don't need to rejoin, John, just re-set your cookie, look under Membership. Yes, the gathering is open to everyone who can get here. I've arranged caravan parking at the narrow-guage railway, they have power link-ups and everything. Send me a personal message if you need more info. Us Mancunians need to stick together. regards, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: GUEST,JohnJ Date: 01 Sep 00 - 12:06 PM I've just noticed my last message has me as a 'guest. Curious. I wonder if this lists me as a guest, or if I'll have to 're-join'. Ta ta. John |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: GUEST,john Date: 01 Sep 00 - 12:03 PM Can anyone come along? If so, can I come? I've got a caravan, is there anywhere to put it? (Printable answers only please). TTFN John (in Manchester) |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: katlaughing Date: 30 Aug 00 - 09:25 PM Thanks for the language lesson! Maybe we could have one live in Hearme sometime? Happy Birthday, Dalek! |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 30 Aug 00 - 07:00 PM You are welcome, Liz, and you were probably well out of it, though don't maltese people have beautiful eyes? Dalek, you don't count as a child because you're 25 on Saturday!!!! Love, Mum. |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Aug 00 - 11:49 AM OOoooo praise indeed Llanfair - thank you!! I was dubious about posting it at first, but then remembered how useful the lesson was when I was first given it at the tender age of 19, by a welshman I nearly married.... couldn't cope with the relatives though, his mother spoke two languages, his father one, he spoke three. Ever had an argument in Welsh, Maltese and English? His father was lovely, but knew only 3 phrases in English, and I can't repeat any of them!! LTS |

Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: bill\sables Date: 30 Aug 00 - 06:51 AM Just had an email from Linda Mat a catter from Oregon who is hoping to be over here for the gathering. She plays Fiddle. Cheers Bill |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 30 Aug 00 - 04:55 AM Well done, Liz, spot on! The problem is that pronounciation varies depending on which part of Wales you are in. North and south are very different, and in Mid-Wales, they make it up as they go along!!! Caer is Cayer. Remember, every letter is pronounced and enjoyed when speaking Cymraeg. Cheers, Bron. Gomez, You can play whatever you like as long as you don't frighten the horses!! |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Gomez Date: 29 Aug 00 - 07:13 PM can i bring my bodhr.. bordr.. bohdr... (tired now) will i be allowed to beat it in front of people? |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Liz the Squeak Date: 29 Aug 00 - 06:37 PM #Clan vair Care any on# is how I was told to say it..... the Ll sound is the one that most non-welsh speakers find hardest to do. It is a sort of soft cl from the sides of the tongue, rather than the top of it hitting the back of your mouth. Have the tip of your tongue at the back of your top front teeth, that should do it.... A single f is prounounced v, f is written ff. Caer is debatable. One school says it should be care, the other Cayer. You choose - it means (I think?) castle. You could always go and visit Splot. That's in Cardiff. Or Sketty - that's Swansea. Ah, the romance of Splot.... LTS |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: katlaughing Date: 29 Aug 00 - 06:28 PM I love Llanstock! Bron, as I am so interested in languages, please would you put a phonetic spelling in here so that I can understand how the town's name is pronounced? I used to have a very dear friend from Wales, but she never slowed down long enough to teach me some of the pronunciations. Thanks! Thanks to Noreen for the link, too. I just has a nice little visit. Little bit of thread creep: Eric, you might enjoy looking at theDurango Narrow Gauge Railway. It was one of my favourite rides when I was growing up in Colorado and was used in the movie Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. The slide show at this website does not do it justice, but at least you get an idea. kat |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 29 Aug 00 - 04:48 PM I've just had an E-Mail from my nephew, Rupert, who has been snooping round the Mudcat Cafe. He refers to the gathering as "Llanstock", and I love it. What do others think? Eric, there should be people around the station and engine sheds doing unspeakable things to innocent steam engines, so you will probably get the chance to chat, if not actually get your hands dirty. And there's always Jim, he works on the REAL railways!!!! Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Catrin Date: 29 Aug 00 - 04:37 PM See you there folks - I can't wait!!!! |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Eric the Viking Date: 29 Aug 00 - 04:18 PM What a place-just a pity that the steam is not on- I used to spend a lot of time working on a preserved railway. See you. Cheers. Eric |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Noreen Date: 26 Aug 00 - 05:57 PM Hi Bron, here's the link for Llanfair Caereinion again, to save people having to go back to the first thread. Sounds a lovely place. Think I'll ring Pippins tomorrow, I feel like having something to look forward to! Noreen |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 26 Aug 00 - 10:25 AM Well, Eric, you will,(I hope) be coming to Llanfair Caereinion, near Welshpool, Powys. The gathering is on 14th and 15th of October, and I'm really looking forward to it. We're organising accommodation as we go along. Some have booked in at the pub, some at Pippins, and they still have space. There is camping space behind the pub, floor space in the pub, and caravan space, with power linkage, at the narrow-gauge railway station. If the weather is OK, outdoor stuff is planned, and I have booked the hall for indoor stuff. The rest is up to the Mudcatters who manage to get here!!!!! Best wishes, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Eric the Viking Date: 26 Aug 00 - 05:54 AM Hi everyone-I thought I'd refresh this thread to find out if there have been anymore changes or further details added. Where exactly are we all coming to, and how are the accomodation arrangements doing. If there is any news please let me know. Thanks. Eric |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Noreen Date: 16 Jul 00 - 04:40 PM Try the HTML stuff thread, Bron, the first posting has all this in & it is very easy to learn, honestly! --Noreen |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 16 Jul 00 - 03:24 PM Thanks, Noreen. I really must concentrate and learn how to do that!!!! Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Noreen Date: 16 Jul 00 - 09:34 AM click here for the original thread. Takes a long time to load now! --Noreen |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 16 Jul 00 - 09:27 AM Marc, I've refreshed the original thread for you to read. I should have done a blue clicky thing, but I haven't mastered the art!!! Micca, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to freak you out!!!! It's not compulsory by any means, and I have no intention of even thinking about who does what until you are all here. Contributions to the music will be welcome, wherever they come from, and, as you've probably noticed, I'm not the sort of person who is into organising people. I just sort out venue, accommodation, food, beer, and childcare. The rest, as they say, is up to you!!!! It was only a suggestion!!!! Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: GUEST,marcborzoni@netscapeonline.co.uk Date: 16 Jul 00 - 08:14 AM Hi, I'm brand new to the site and I would like someone to tell me about the Gathering. Where is it, what's it all about, who will be there, etc.? Thanks, Marc

Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Micca Date: 16 Jul 00 - 07:10 AM Bearing in mind that for some of us the idea of going on a STAGE and singing (for 20 minutes!!!! you are KIDDING) is up there with ferrets down the trousers or crawling a mile over broken glass as the preferred way of passing time..but who are Happy(ish) to do the odd song from the floor of a club or in a singaround, This stage thing is ok for those who " perform" but there are some of us who just sing ocassionally (and badly). |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Morticia Date: 15 Jul 00 - 10:22 PM Good idea Bron, at least you or aomeone else won't have to keep prompting people to sing if they do a 20 min. slot. Should people prepared to do that sign up to it? |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Catrin Date: 15 Jul 00 - 03:31 PM A non-stop folk club - heaven! This is sounding better and better all the time. Catrin |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 Jul 00 - 03:27 PM Yo, go for it - but 20 mins would be my entire repertoire twice over!! Like the idea of a non-stop folk club though! And I echo Morticia's comments, it will be great to see everyone in the flesh (and in some cases, that's a LOT of flesh......) LTS |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 15 Jul 00 - 01:14 PM Thanks for your kind words, Morticia. I'm suffering a throat infection at the moment, and everything seems to be a huge effort!!!! We seem to have most things in hand at the moment. However A further notion occurred to me, and I would appreciate some feedback. The hall has a stage and lots of room. What about running a continuous "concert" during the afternoon and evening of the Saturday. Everyone could have-say- a 20 minute spot to do their party pieces. People can come and go as they please, and it would give the locals a chance to see what is going on. Towards the end, when everyone is thoroughly tanked up, perhaps we could all contribute to some tunes that we all know or can busk along to. Let me know what you think. Hwyl, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Morticia Date: 15 Jul 00 - 11:38 AM I am really looking forward to this, can't thank you enough for all your efforts Bron! |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 Jul 00 - 06:38 AM Pippins is cheap and had plenty of room when we rang last week.... LTS |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 15 Jul 00 - 04:33 AM Indeed there will be room for you all!! There is space for camping in a small field behind the pub (there are some flattish bits!) or you could ring Pippins, and ask about the caravan that they have, and are letting out for a nominal fee. The number is 01938 810229. Might be a bit warmer! Best wishes, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: bill\sables Date: 14 Jul 00 - 05:59 PM Hi Bron, As I said from LEJ's I would like to come to your gathering, SkipjackK8 has asked if I will come over with him and I was thinking of asking Sam Pirt. Sam has just had his 21st Birthday so he doesn't count as a child now, and the other one who might be able to come is Eric Symonds. Will there be room for us all? We will probably be cmping. Cheers Bill |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 14 Jul 00 - 02:29 PM Refresh. |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 Jul 00 - 01:33 PM Hey, Micca, I thought you were going in Morticias car..... Has she finally seen the light? And are you going to leave the gallstone at home - because that is not coming in the car with me! Phoebe loves babies, but can't eat a whole one. LTS |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Catlin Date: 12 Jul 00 - 09:04 AM We'll be bring our son Adam, who will be 13/14 months by then. Finding a babysitter would be a great help!
|
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Micca Date: 11 Jul 00 - 02:13 PM Liz , I spoke to the Shark today and tentatively put our names on your spare seats for the trip, this is in case he forgets to mention it....I wont know if Aud can afford the time off, untl nearer the time, |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Liz the Squeak Date: 11 Jul 00 - 01:34 PM You already know, but I'll put it here to encourage (or discourage?) others. We hope to bring Rosemary's Baby - oops, sorry, our darling offspring, Phoebe, who is 4 and loves music and dancing. She is an unsociable moo (like her mother, go on, I'll say it before you'se lot do) who gets up early and is unbearably cheerful, even after going to sleep at midnight. She regularly goes to Morris practice and has been known to join in with Irish sessions. She has her own variation of 'Riverdance', with some moves I suspect were copied from 'Steps'. LTS |
Subject: RE: UK Gathering II From: Catrin Date: 11 Jul 00 - 04:29 AM Hi Llanfair I'm coming by meself - no kids. I have a ten year old (and a twenty year old!) but I fancy some independence. Thanks Catrin |
Subject: UK Gathering II From: Llanfair Date: 11 Jul 00 - 04:27 AM Hi there! Please could those people coming to Wales in October give me some idea of the number of children coming. I must admit, I hadn't thought the implications through on this one, and I need to know how many kids to expect, so that I can make some arrangements for entertaining them. They won't be able to go into the pub after 9pm, but , if there aren't many, I might be able to sort out some babysitting. Hwyl, Bron. |
