Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Anglo Date: 01 Oct 08 - 02:09 AM And Amos, I'll look forward to meeting you too. (--from one who recently recorded a certain poem by a certain Mr Masefield.) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Anglo Date: 01 Oct 08 - 02:06 AM MaineDog, you are doing a wonderful thing there. I didn't know Marianne well, but I was always up for dancing some bourrees at her regular French session at Neffa, which was fun, fun, fun. She was such a vivacious, giving person. I will miss her. Think a good thought for me. I'll miss meeting you at the Getaway. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Linda Goodman Zebooker Date: 30 Sep 08 - 10:24 PM Lots of people volunteered on their registration forms to help with the Friday potluck. Many thanks - I'll contact you if you are among them. But some help will also be needed to set up the evening snack on Saturday after the concert, or to clean up afterwards. That wasn't asked for on the form. If you'd like to help with Saturday, please see me...I'll be there as soon as I can be on Friday evening. I'm looking forward to meeting the Mudcatters who have not been at The Getaway before! Maybe someone will point me out to you, or vice-versa! --Linda |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: MaineDog Date: 29 Sep 08 - 06:23 PM Sounds like a good time is in store for most of you, except perhaps for those who have been singled out for abuse (!?), However, I have to play for a memorial service for our recently departed friend and dance teacher Marianne Taylor. Perhaps next year! MD |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 28 Sep 08 - 03:26 PM I must go off to the Getaway, By the distant West River shore. I am called by the call of a thousand souls The guitar, and the banjo's roar, For the Getaway's cal is a pure, high call, As clear as the smell of a skunk, To spend three days in the Muses' ways, Picking, and singing, and drunk. And the songs they sing are the fine old songs From when songs were writ in the soul. Long before the days of rap, or punk, And the crash of rock and roll. When a man could sing to the stars on high, His guitar as his only aid, And folks would nod, and smile and hum Knowing every song he played. No, I must go back to the Getaway, And the Getaway songsters true, And all I ask is six sound strings And a fifth for to see me through. For the hugs of friends, and the jamming hours Make a bond, which you may not free, Until I return to the Western shore And put out again to sea. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 24 Sep 08 - 01:50 PM Just for easy reference: "There's many a strange impulse out on the plains of West Texas; There's many a young boy who feels things he don't comprehend. Well small town don't like it when somebody falls between sexes, No, small town don't like it when a cowboy has feelings for men. Well I believe in my soul that inside every man there's a feminine, And inside every lady there's a deep manly voice loud and clear. Well, a cowboy may brag about things that he does with his women, But the ones who brag loudest are the ones that are most likely queer. Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other Ten men for each woman was the rule way back when on the prairie, And somehow those cowboys must have kept themselves warm late at night. Cowboys are famous for getting riled up about fairies, But I'll tell you the reason a big strong man gets so uptight: Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other -- Well there's always somebody who says what the others just whisper, And mostly that someone's the first one to get shot down dead: When you talk to a cowboy don't treat him like he was a sister Don't mess with the lady that's sleepin' in each cowboy's head. Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: SINSULL Date: 23 Sep 08 - 08:04 AM Damn, Allan! I thought once the PhD was finished, you'd be here. Ah well... Willie Nelson has a UTube of the Cowboy Song. It's hilarious. Somewhere I have the link. m |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: jacqui.c Date: 23 Sep 08 - 07:08 AM You will both be missed - start working on getting there next year! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Janie Date: 23 Sep 08 - 06:51 AM Hi Allan and Carmen! Very sorry you aren't coming, but great to hear you are still alive! Janie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Allan C. Date: 23 Sep 08 - 06:03 AM Well, folks, I am sorry to say that the stars failed once again to align in such a way as to allow Carmen and me to attend the Getaway. We'll be thinking of you all and will sing along as loudly as we can. Just pretend you can hear us while we pretend we can hear you. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 20 Sep 08 - 11:24 AM Hey, Marion, we'll both be Getaway virgins! And for the same reason. LOL Yeah, I did know Willie recorded that song, and I heard his version once, but you were my first, so to speak -- plus, I understand it was written by a woman. I hope you'll sing it sometime at the Getaway. Genie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Marion Date: 20 Sep 08 - 07:46 AM I'm glad I'm coming, too... I've wanted to go to a getaway for years, but never had both the time and the money till now. It'll be great to reunite with some of the people I've met on my travels, and see faces for other names. Did you know, Genie, that Willie Nelson recorded that cowboy song a couple of years ago? Marion |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 20 Sep 08 - 02:15 AM Glad to hear Marion's coming, too. Maybe we'll get her to do that "Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond ... " song again. ;D Genie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: artbrooks Date: 19 Sep 08 - 07:41 PM Glad Marion has a ride - there was some (brief) discussion earlier about us picking her up on our way through Pittsburgh. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Charmion Date: 19 Sep 08 - 05:54 PM Thanks for the offer, SINS, but Maine is very far off the track from Ottawa to Maryland. We'll be coming straight down Interstate 81 from the Ivy Lea Bridge all the way to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where we will get on Interstate 83 to head for the Beltway. If you run the route on Google Maps, you'll see that Harrisburg is almost due south from Ottawa, and the I-81 through New York and Pennsylvania is the straightest possible run on that bearing. By the time we get to the Getaway, we will be thoroughly tired of travelling, I betcha. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: SINSULL Date: 19 Sep 08 - 11:03 AM Charmion, Flop at my house if it works for you. M |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: beardedbruce Date: 19 Sep 08 - 10:46 AM What size tambourine does a whale play??? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Barry Finn Date: 19 Sep 08 - 10:41 AM Sorry to hear Peg won't be coming, I was looking forward to her singing, maybe next yr (sigh) Mary, I'm always behaving nicely,,,,wrench!(pun) Barry |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Charmion Date: 19 Sep 08 - 10:18 AM I will be driving south from Ottawa, leaving on Thursday 2 October and arriving at West River on Friday 3 October. Marion from Toronto is coming with me; she will take the train from Toronto to Ottawa on Wednesday. Unfortunately, Peg in Albany will not be joining us -- work got in the way. I would love to be able to make the Shivers' sing on Thursday night, but leaving Ottawa before Thursday morning is just not possible this year. Marion has accepted the onerous job of minding the map, and we will flop in some cheap (but not nasty) motel near the highway. I've never been to a Getaway without Edmund before. It's going to be strange ... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 19 Sep 08 - 09:51 AM MAry: You can bring the feathers, but not the whole duck; you may bring the tambourine, but not the rest of the whale. A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bobert Date: 19 Sep 08 - 08:59 AM Claire, I might be able to get you back to Dulles but it would be on Monday... PM me... I'll be on the road today but check back later this evening... B~ |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: SINSULL Date: 19 Sep 08 - 08:09 AM I have a little something planned for Mick but I need a baby to pull it off. Barry has not been a good boy so he may be in for some abuse - we'll see. Mostly we just got over John Roberts. The Portsmouth Festival is coming up. Andrew and Carole are staying here and Micca later. So I am spending an inordinate amount of time laundering sheets and airing sleeping bags. Then we come back to a Cindy Kallet concert followed by Gordon Bok, both requiring more than the usual prep time. In short, life is good and filled with music. Somewhere around here I have feathers but they are probably turkey or chicken, hardly the tools of a temptress. Can I bring my whale tambourine? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Leadfingers Date: 19 Sep 08 - 07:22 AM You DO have to watch out for The Maineiacs !! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 19 Sep 08 - 01:30 AM I dunno...Mary's not threatening Mick...Gary could be right. There may be wickedness afoot in the land... A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Leadfingers Date: 18 Sep 08 - 10:09 PM And those of us travelling Three Thousand Miles or so have a lot of Internet work to do , with Insurance , Car Hire etc etc ! But its only two weeks to Go !! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 18 Sep 08 - 09:16 PM Nah, Gary. We're just all too busy packing. ; D Genie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Gorgeous Gary Date: 18 Sep 08 - 07:51 PM Is it just me, or are the Getaway threads a bit quieter comin' round the final turn than usual. I'm startin' to worry--does this mean that some of the nuttiness being planned is too insane to even be discussed in the open? ;-) -- Gary |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 17 Sep 08 - 11:51 PM WhoooWheeeeee. I swan, this will make the Mad Hatter's Tea Party look like a Council on Foreign Relations meeting. A |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: ClaireBear Date: 09 Sep 08 - 03:50 PM Oh good, someone else went first asking about airport transport. Me too! I have a ride to the Getaway, but not from, and I need to get to Dulles -- but I don't need to get there at any particular time, as I'm not flying out until Tuesday morning. Can anyone get me close, or to a form of transportation (bus, car rental counter, train...) that can get me close? I remember a very kind man telling me last year that he lived or worked near there and could be asked for rides, but I am sorry to say I cannot recall who that was. I hope he reads this! Cheers, Claire |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: MegW Date: 09 Sep 08 - 02:29 PM Thanks Bill, I'll look into that again. I was scared away at first because of the costs, but it's looking like the only other remotely sensible option is a cab, and, well... Incidentally, is anyone getting into the Baltimore airport Friday afternoon/evening and planning on leaving Monday morning? :) |
