Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: punkfolkrocker Date: 04 Feb 21 - 11:39 AM When I was 15, our band was starting to get basically proficient in 'pub rock' classic R&B songs.. At that time I had to be the clever clogs and insist we were too young and inexperienced to be anywhere near as authentic as real old black blues singers, still slogging away on tours in their old age.. Which lead to teenage schoolboy joking about how funny the distant future will be when the Rolling stones are even older* codgers jamming their hits in a faded rock star's retirement home... [* By rock/pop standards, they were already getting on a bit in their 30s.. old geezers at least twice our age...!!!]... |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: meself Date: 04 Feb 21 - 10:54 AM The Great Sonny Boy Williamson no 2 said a lot of things. He told a very young Junior Wells that he was 'too stupid' to learn how to play the harmonica, as an example (according to an older, successful, Jr Wells). |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: GUEST,James Phillips Date: 04 Feb 21 - 10:02 AM The Stones are now just a corporation which sells "last chance to see The Stones before you die" experiences for hundreds of dollars a ticket. That's the only reason anyone goes to see the Stones these days. To cross it off their list. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: The Sandman Date: 04 Feb 21 - 07:50 AM The Great Sonny Boy Williamson no 2 said of The Rolling Stones."Those boys they want to play the blues so bad and thats just what they do."Sonny boy really could play here he is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bY0vcg2F-I just because they played the blues so bad, thats a not a reason to give up playing fifty years later |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 04 Feb 21 - 06:58 AM On 18 April 1964 I sat listening to Saturday Club on the BBC Light Programme and recorded this by the Rolling Stones at their best!! |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Johnny J Date: 04 Feb 21 - 06:05 AM Back in the sixties, Mick and Keef were struggling to come up with a song for a Double "A" Side for "Let's spend the night together". Keef said "I think we should call it a day, Mick..." Then "Ruby Tuesday" was born :-)) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2CfgWPj3ls |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Feb 21 - 12:22 AM I haven't followed them lately, but I certainly liked what they did in their first twenty years. They brought lots of great blues songs to our attention. Same with Cream and Led Zeppelin. You can certainly find fault with them, but they brought a lot of good songs to our attention. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: The Sandman Date: 04 Feb 21 - 12:16 AM I do not rate them ,So what, they have their fans that go to their concerts and enjoy their music, why should their enjoyment be stopped just because someone on mudcat thinks that other peoples enjoyment should be stopped. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: voyager Date: 03 Feb 21 - 09:33 PM Keith Richards bio 'LIFE' fell into my book pile this month. Quite a talented musical android (part-human, part-bluesman, part-reptilian) he has evolved to. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: theleveller Date: 28 Jul 18 - 08:26 AM If they're enjoying doing it and people are prepared to pay, what's the problem? Personally, I wouldn't pay a ridiculous amount to see them. But neither would I pay £75 to see Richard Thompson, and I really like him. I saw Steve Harley a few months ago and The Levellers last week and both were superb, although it was a little strange to see them sitting down to perform. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Backwoodsman Date: 28 Jul 18 - 06:25 AM Un-satisfying! Bloody iPad predictive text! |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Backwoodsman Date: 28 Jul 18 - 06:22 AM Ah, not the guy I thought you were! But of course, a solo performer isn't (or shouldn't be) trying to 'make it sound like a four or five piece pop group' - I certainly wouldn't. He/she should be doing their own, solo interpretation of the song. The over-arching memories I have of Bruce Springsteen concerts are the songs he sang with just his own acoustic guitar accompaniment. Absolutely wonderful 'hairs-on-the-back-of-your-neck' stuff. I 'do' two or three classic pop songs, that's all, but I try to do them 'my way', otherwise simply trying to duplicate a band-record is not only very in-satisfying for me, but also doomed to result in failure. And I don't sing them in folk clubs, only 'acoustic music' clubs or open-mics. Regarding the Stones, I'm in absolute agreement with you! |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Jul 18 - 06:18 AM surely that's the point of folk clubs. you are a folk. you have a voice. you want to sing. it does not have to be a 'good' voice. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: GUEST,Observer Date: 28 Jul 18 - 06:06 AM Unfortunately "Baccy" most who do attempt 60s and 70s pop hits in folk clubs do not have good voices and no matter how competent you or anyone else is on guitar you simply cannot make it sound like a four or five piece pop group. As to your own self proclaimed talents I'll take your word for it as to my certain knowledge I have never seen or heard you 'perform'. As for "The Stones" I am sure they will continue to perform until such time as no-one is prepared to part with their cash to see them - good luck to them! |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Backwoodsman Date: 28 Jul 18 - 05:32 AM "none of it is improved or bettered by some twat with a reedy voice and a mediocre accompaniment on a six string guitar." Well thank fuck I've got a good voice and I'm a decently competent guitar player (as Guest: Observer should know, if he/she is the 'banned ex-member' I'm guessing he/she is!). :-) :-) |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: GUEST,johnmc Date: 28 Jul 18 - 05:19 AM I imagine a recording created as described might not do justice to the actual sound in the arena. It might even make the playing seem out of time. You get some appalling sound from TV broadcasts of live rock, for example. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 28 Jul 18 - 05:06 AM "And Fairport Convention are their own tribute band" - current line up are twee beyond imagination. I regularly play a recording of a Cropredy warm up from August 1992 which is superb!!! |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: GUEST,Modette Date: 28 Jul 18 - 05:01 AM I saw them recently - fantastic. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: GUEST,Bob Mould Date: 28 Jul 18 - 04:58 AM I like how they sound these days It's more akin to Howlin' Wolf or Sam Hopkins. I can see why some people would prefer their earlier, safer duller, more vanilla sound, but for me this new feel has more soul. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Iains Date: 28 Jul 18 - 04:54 AM We do not insist politicians retire, so why criticize performing musicians of advancing years. They must be doing something right if people still pay to see them. They are also far more entertaining. Seems there are one or two embittered posters here. Envious perhaps? |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Steve Shaw Date: 28 Jul 18 - 04:45 AM Well you can't always get what you want, Dick. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: The Sandman Date: 28 Jul 18 - 03:52 AM I wouldnt give Mick jagger a floor spot the only thing hes any good at is mincing about |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: BobL Date: 28 Jul 18 - 02:18 AM Quite a few bands seem to be still flourishing, long past the normal best-before date of the rest. I saw a full-page ad yesterday for Iron Maiden's forthcoming tour - apparently already sold out. Presumably the ad space was firmly booked long ago. Well, if they can still bring in the customers.... And Fairport Convention are their own tribute band. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 27 Jul 18 - 07:21 PM Did they not have an album, a studio album in the last five or ten years, receive a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues? 2016 or something? |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Brian Peters Date: 27 Jul 18 - 06:44 PM why would they stop? Maybe they don't stop because they enjoy playing? A pal of mine who's a fine bass player and a more than decent guitarist went to see them in Manchester, and reported not only that they played really well, but also appeared to be having a lot of fun. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Steve Shaw Date: 27 Jul 18 - 06:44 PM So which banned ex-member are you then? :-) |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: GUEST,Observer Date: 27 Jul 18 - 06:42 PM What!!! Halt the career of one of the best folk bands the country (Or should I say Cuntry as Backwoodsman/ Muskrat would say). You should all be ashamed of yourselves. All those 60s and 70s "folk icons" that are being played in so-called "folk clubs" - personally speaking if I want to listen to any of that music I will listen to a recording - none of it is improved or bettered by some twat with a reedy voice and a mediocre accompaniment on a six string guitar. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Steve Shaw Date: 27 Jul 18 - 05:29 PM Because they don't need more money? |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Big Al Whittle Date: 27 Jul 18 - 05:07 PM Bearing in mind - they probably get paid more for each gig than most of us make in our lives - why would they stop? |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Jul 18 - 04:50 PM We watched them on telly about 2 years ago and they were ok but how much of it was in the mix and how much was them, I don't know. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 27 Jul 18 - 04:13 PM I've no idea, but they all play out of time with each other! |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: David Carter (UK) Date: 27 Jul 18 - 02:44 PM Who was playing lead guitar? Keith Richards has lost it, which is why they bring in Mick Taylor, for instance at Glastonbury 2013. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 27 Jul 18 - 12:44 PM Their Chuck Berry & Bo Diddley days were the best. |
Subject: RE: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: GUEST,Manch Date: 27 Jul 18 - 10:12 AM Yes, and Sonny Boy Williamson said many years ago, those boys want to play the blues so bad, and that is what they do |
Subject: The Rolling Stones should call it a day! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 27 Jul 18 - 10:01 AM I have a recording from their recent London Stadium gig, compliled from a number of in ear monitor feeds to produce a sort of stereo field. Quite frankly their playing is awful now, they sound like a schoolboy band at their second ever rehearsal! |
