Subject: RE: BS: Who are your favorite guitarists? From: ddw Date: 27 Jun 01 - 12:42 AM I'm a little surprised some Canuks haven't mentioned Jesse Cook or Oscar Lopez. Also Leon Redbone and Paul Mills (Curly Boy Stubbs) are in there pretty high. And nobody has mentioned Bruce Langhorn, either. Never liked his smarmy persona, but Glen Campbell was a helluva picker when he got wound up. david |
Subject: RE: BS: Who are your favorite guitarists? From: Steve Latimer Date: 26 Jun 01 - 11:59 PM Lonesome Ej, Stevie Ray has always been a problem for me. I've often thought that he was a Jimi, Albert King, JW clone. These guys were innovators. But then I listen to him again. Stevie had feel, he had soul, which is why I prefer Son House's (albeit not great) playing to say a Gary (how many blues notes can I fit in here?) Moore.

Subject: RE: BS: Who are your favorite guitarists? From: Lonesome EJ Date: 26 Jun 01 - 11:49 PM Eric Clapton, at least on the Layla album. Hendrix, who changed everything. Randy California, the 6 string genius in Spirit. Robby Kreiger, for taking slide guitar into so many places it had never been before. Peter Green, for creating Fleetwood's snaky sound. Robert Johnson, for teaching us that guitar is played with the soul and not just the fingers. Mark Knopfler, for those intricate streams of sparkling notes. Roger McGuinn, for taking an acoustic instrument into the jet stream. Sneaky Pete Kleinow, for channeling the jet stream into his pedal steel. Eddie Van Halen, for ripping through most of the existing sonic envelopes. Jerry Garcia, for making every solo a new exploration. Peter Buck, for sheer diversity of sound. Stevie Ray, for throwing a little Jimi, Freddy King, Johnny Winter, and a dash of everyone else into the blender and pouring out something brand new. |
Subject: RE: BS: Who are your favorite guitarists? From: Steve Latimer Date: 26 Jun 01 - 11:44 PM How could I have forgotten Richie Havens. Extraordinary technique, wonderful feel. Someone mentioned Zappa. What an underrated player. I used to love both Clapton & B.B. King. I've gone off both of them now. I feel that they have both become pop artists as opposed to Blues artists. |

Subject: RE: BS: Who are your favorite guitarists? From: Benjamin Date: 26 Jun 01 - 09:00 PM Matt, I've mentioned David Russell to you in the past I'm sure. He recorded a CD of celtic music for classical guitar. You should look into him, seriously! I'm sure Dr. Frank will tell you something about him too. Norbert Kraft runs the NAXOS label and teaches at the Royal Conservitory in Canada (I think it's somewhere around Toronto). NAXOS is a discount label, so you could by one of his CDs for like $6 or $7. He's a great player. But to be honest, I don't agree with everything that was said in that discussion. He still might be worth looking into for the price of his CDs. |

Subject: RE: BS: Who are your favorite guitarists? From: Benjamin Date: 26 Jun 01 - 06:39 PM Actually Matt, there was a thread asking who the best guitarist liveing is on the Classical Guitar Forum and almost no one mentioned Williams (Canadians seemed to love Norbert Kraft though). I would agree that Williams has more technique than anyone recorded and perhaps ever. Still, I perfer David Russell to any other player. He's better than Pepe, Bream, and much better than York! You should check him out! On another note about Williams, I've heard that he's now involved in an African ensemble. I'd be interested to hear that.

Subject: RE: BS: Who are your favorite guitarists? From: Chicken Charlie Date: 26 Jun 01 - 05:43 PM Mance Lipscomb, Bukka White, Leo Kotke, Lone Cat Fuller, Doc Watson, Richie Havens. Hendrix, Montgomery and Reinhardt are all solid; I haven't played them in a long time, though. Too busy working on the guys in paragraph 1. Jose Feliciano--anybody remember him?? Classical influenced jazzy renditions of Pop Rock stuff. Light My Fire; California Dreamin'. I think some of the folks nominated are excellent musicians who happen to be guitarists, but I'm not sure that makes them superior guitarists per se. I should also, which is totally pointless but fun, say that I admire my friend Glenn Elfman (folk) who is connected with the Pistol River concerts in Oregon, and my very own side-man "Jammin' George" Miller (boogie; rag). Subject: RE: BS: Who are your favorite guitarists? From: Matt_R Date: 26 Jun 01 - 08:44 AM Well, as us classical guitarists go, Segovia was a groundbreaker but certainly not "head and shoulders" above the rest. That position is filled by John Williams, Pepe Romero, Julian Bream, and Andrew York. 9 out of 10 classical guitarists will tell you that Williams is the greatest ever (so far). I forgot to mention Bernard Butler and Arty McGlynn! |

Subject: RE: BS: Who are your favorite guitarists? From: IanC Date: 26 Jun 01 - 06:10 AM Actually, I like Kevin McGrath's guitar playing; unconventional but nice. I also have a friend whose name is Alan. Before he got his new Yamaha, he had an old guitar which was coming to pieces. The face got lower and lower and so did the bridge, so the strings made a sort of "slappy" sound (before it got too bad). I really miss that one.
Cheers! |
