Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: Ebbie Date: 22 Apr 03 - 10:15 PM Man, I had no idea there are so many- and probably just scratched the surface, at that. But here's one that nobody else has: Juneau Breakdown. I left my sweet love there waiting alone To travel this world around And now I'm going back to my home In that good old Juneau town... Chorus: I know that he waits for me night and day I know that he wants me to settle down And I know that I want forever to stay In that good old Juneau town Canberra, Cairo, Prague and Amsterdam Of all the guys, the best I have found -even in Paris, London, Peoria- In that good old Juneau town :) |

Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: Genie Date: 22 Sep 02 - 10:06 PM Little Hawk, as you know by now, someone actually has written another song about Schenedtady. It's here: "I Can't Spell 'Schenedtady." |
Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: Genie Date: 22 Sep 02 - 10:00 PM I checked the spelling; it's "Luckenbach, Texas." |
Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: belfast Date: 22 Sep 02 - 07:40 AM In Ireland, for every town, village, couple of houses in the middle of nowhere on a bog road, there is some buck eejit writing a song about it. There are some versifiers who couldn't walk past a gap in a hedge without writing thirty stanzas telling you that it's the fairest spot on god's green earth. A brilliant take on this is Brian O'Rourke's song "Drumsnot" but I've no idea where you would get it. |
Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: Tam the bam fraeSaltcoatsScotland Date: 22 Sep 02 - 06:32 AM There's a song by Billy Connolly called 'Saltcoats at the fair' This is about when the people of Glasgow, came to my home town and had their fornight holiday. Saltcoats by the sea. |
Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: Genie Date: 22 Sep 02 - 05:06 AM JJ, you're not being insufferably pedantic, just correcting some misunderstandings. I had forgotten the actual title of that Sam Hinton song. And I wasn't sure about what Rocky Top was; I think I have some lyrics that erroneously say "...in Rocky Top..." instead of "...on Rocky Top." Along the same lines, isn't Bikini an atoll instead of a town? Gorgeous, thanks for mentioning "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav." That's the song sung at the end of "Schindler's List," and it's a beautiful song. Another town song is (sp?) "Lukenback, Texas." |

Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: reggie miles Date: 21 Sep 02 - 10:59 AM I've been through this entire thread and I didn't see any mention of a song that Jonny Mercer popularized called "I Lost My Sugar In Salt Lake City". I still sing that one. |
Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: JJ Date: 21 Sep 02 - 10:52 AM OK, time for some insufferable pedantry! The "anti-war, anti-nuke song in the 1950s/'60's called 'Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Alamagordo, Bikini,'" is "Old Man Atom (Talking Atomic Blues)," recorded by Sam Hinton in 1950. "Rocky Top" isn't a city or town. "Wish that I was on old Rocky Top, high in the Tennesse hills" "Deck the Halls with Boston Charlie" is the Pogo Christmas Carol parody by Walt Kelly, "Deck us all with Boston Charlie, Walla Walla, Wash, and Kalamazoo." "You can't go back to Constantinople," is actually "Istanbul." |

Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: old moose Date: 20 Sep 02 - 11:54 PM an old friend of mine used to sing a very nice number called "Aberdeen, My Aberdeen". It is definitely a song withe the name of a city in it. Twice for good measure. |
Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: GUEST,Sonja Date: 20 Sep 02 - 04:14 PM Mehitabel, I just heard someone sing a "Walla Walla" song this weekend, including the line "...the town so nice, they named it twice." Little Hawk, if you think "Guelph" is a funny name, you should come to Washington state. I'm wondering if there are songs (other than ad songs and Chamber Of Commerce Songs) about "Puyallup" (rhymes with "few gallop"), "Sequiam" ("skwim"), "Tukwila," etc. SWO |

Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: old moose Date: 20 Sep 02 - 01:10 PM I am awake this morning. The name of "Walla Walla Wash" was "Deck the Halls with Boston Charlie". Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: Genie Date: 19 Sep 02 - 09:39 PM One way to find these songs is just to look through the alphabetical listings of song titles in the DT. <u>Here are the ones I found under R, S, and T alone,</u> plus a couple of thers I thought of while searching the DT. (A few of these places named may not be towns or cities, but may be just counties, geographical areas, etc., but I think most of them are town/village/city names. Sorry if a couple of them may have already been listed.) Genie Aragon Mill The Calton Weaver Raglan Road Schooners At Digby Swannanoa Tunnel Take Me Back To Tulsa |

Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 18 Sep 02 - 03:28 PM Of course there's no dearth of what I call "Chamber of Commerce songs". Minneapolis, Minnesota has a BIG week-long summer festival, called the Aquatennial. Many years ago (40?) and conceivably even today, they had a song which got big play on the local media, called Minneapolis at Aquatennial Time. Not a bad song, actually, considering the drum-beating, sponsored purpose. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: John in Brisbane Date: 18 Sep 02 - 04:31 AM If you're really obsessive you can go to http://www.nima.mil/gns/html/index.html to find zillions of place names from all over the globe. And to go the extra yard you could always search the DT for all place names mentioned and submit the latitude and longitude each place. Surely that's a piece of research that's at least as valuable as the author's attribution. Only jokin'!! As an aside, an ex-colleague rang a central nessage service chasing the whereabouts of a field technician, to be told by the female operator "He's going to Mt. Charlotte, then going to Mt Mee" (local locations), to which he replied "Well, I hope you enjoy it". He was subsequently sacked. Here's a small sample of the 22,000 place names for Ireland:

Subject: RE: Help: Songs with Cities or Towns in title? From: GUEST,Argenine Date: 17 Sep 02 - 04:38 PM C-flat, I thought Martin was specifically looking for songs with town/city names in the title. If we include all songs that mention a town or city, the list would get very, very long.
A couple that I don't think have been mensioned yet: and several that mention Harlem (which is a section of a city, not a city per se), e.g., "Harlem Nocturne." In a similar vein there's "A Rose In Spanish Harlem." Arge |
