Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: GUEST,Jon & Kathy Date: 15 Mar 04 - 01:20 PM Re message from Suzie and Cllr. Cornwall Songwriters new project, to be launched in June is 'Unsung Heroes', the story of the gardeners from the Lost Gardens of Heligan who went off to the WW1 and how the gardens became 'lost'. We have full support of Candy Smit at Heligan and the show will open in the Lost Gardens of Heligan on June 5th and 6th. It's going to be amazing to do it there. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: IanC Date: 11 Mar 04 - 05:25 AM Richard Sorry if I've missed anything out ... it takes quite a while to compile the list from all the postings, but I didn't deliberately miss out anything which actually fitted the categories (though the special awards are optional as far as I'm concerned). If you can POINT OUT WHAT I MISSED, I'll put it in. :-) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: RichardP Date: 11 Mar 04 - 05:21 AM This really is like the real thing isn't it? I note that the number of nominees is at least in one category significantly fewer than the nominees submitted in the preceding postings. Furthermore, I can see no way that the members who posted have determined which are selected for the ballot paper and which are ignored. Certainly, there are candidates in the ballot with only one nomination, while others have been omitted after receiving two or more independent nominations. Is the Mudcat becoming a guided democracy????? Richard P.S. I have no idea what happened, but the system woudl not let me compose a posting without first sending the above blank one. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: elizabeth Date: 26 Feb 04 - 06:06 AM I agree it's tricky to vote when we are not familiar with each other's local clubs. I'd say it was up to the guests we have (eg the profressionals) to vote on that, but of could they are too tactful to do so. Any one of the many well-loved clubs could win if it succeeded in getting all its members to vote. I much prefer the idea of the silly alternative. Here are my votes: For a silly name coupled with being non-existant, I nominate the I nominate the Ashby-del-la-Zouche folk club as the longest-running non-existent club. The club itself folded perhaps 12 years ago, I forget the actual figure, but the Asby-de-la-Zouche away meeting is still held on the first Friday at Sidmouth each year, It is the only time the club ever meets. Kim Howells had nothing to do with it, mind, but isn't it silly?. I'd also like to second Les B's nomination for BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" CD.................GUIDE CATS FOR THE BLIND The CD is basically Les Barker little gems, sung or read by famous people. See Les Barker's http://www.mrsackroyd.com/ and follow the link to buy it from http://www.bcab.org.uk (bcab=British Computer Association for the Blind) love Elizabeth |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: Mary Humphreys Date: 17 Feb 04 - 01:11 PM IanC - I second your nominations for Folk Dance and Folk Magazine. Mary |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: IanC Date: 17 Feb 04 - 12:34 PM I'd like to suggest an award for a regular dance event, and make a nomination. Citation below. A year or so ago, Alan and Theo of "The Unicorn" fame started a monthly barndance in Hitchin town hall. The got good bands and excellent callers and made use of local performers (morris, sword dancers, mummers etc.) for the interval. It was a bit quiet to start with, but they have persevered and now it is quite a healthy and lively event with a regular following as well as a good few non-regulars every month. So ... Unicorn Ceilidhs, Hichin. Since I've said that, what about a secion for local folk magazines. I'll nominate Unicorn (Beds, Herts, Bucks) anyway. :-) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: breezy Date: 16 Feb 04 - 06:26 PM The Moorland Folk Club near Wotter, Plymuffway Very friendly, hard working ,quality guest nights, great singing audience. Didnt we play there last Sunday George? btw you forgot to mention the Legion but never mind, As I visit more clubs and sessions than anyone else in the country probably I should make the final desicion descision you know , give out the prizes. You cant vote for your own so I cant mention the song club in St Albans that has Les Sullivan this Friday if only we knew where and Steve Last on Sunday at the Legion jusrememberd sattheDuke of marlbro this bodintons gud |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: Skipper Jack Date: 16 Feb 04 - 02:28 PM How about this then - the folk club with the shortest life span? I opened a folk club at a pub in Neath, South Wales. Went back the following week to find the place all boarded up. They didn't bother to tell us that the pub was closing! |
