"My cassettes just fit in a slot and play. Why do they need this tape stuff inside them - after all, they play without me needing to touch the tape?"

Why are CD covers called 'jewel cases?'

Presuming that the grooves on a CD (if indeed there are grooves?) and the laser?? works on the same principle as the old needle for LP's. Then, it is to be supposed that when it arrives at the hole in the middle, it stops!!

CDs don't wear drawers. The go around neked.

Hey, I didn't know the answer, either. I know that some CD players have spindles, but I didn't know the ones with drawers had 'em.

So you can put them on your bulletin boards with push=pins. Very considerate design.

One should always know the answer to these questions before you ask them, noHj!
It makes you look less of an idiot.

So it can be snapped into the jewel case.

And also the picture on http://stuffo.howstuffworks.com/cd4.htm which shows the cup deal for the center hole. The CD has a variable rate of speed depedning where the reader is on the long spiral groove or series of bumps that makes up the data.

I believe it is for driving them round and round at a controlled rate of speed, without which they could not be read. The centering and driving device on some CD players is a cone-and-cup combination that sandwiches the CD through the hole.

"cd players have a slot that they fit in"

Ummm... no they don't... a CD is spun by fitting a 'spinner' into the centre hole... (gross! LOL)

Plastic records needed a hole in the middle, to fit on the spindle of the record player, but cd players have a slot that they fit in, so waht are the holes in the middle of cd's for then?
