A huge thank you to Andy, Lilly and the rest of the team for a fantastic weekend of folk and chat. Miskin is the most relaxed festival around and this is why it is sooooooo popular.
Same again next year folks?
Yes why not. There's nothing wrong with more of the same if it works and Miskin works big time.

Also forgot to mention how much I enjoyed 'Ember', and the singing and playing in Nellies and upstairs too, along with hearing all the wonderful singers and players in those sessions. The Hill did for me too, but when your six-pack has turned into a firkin, your bum needs two chairs to sit on, your lungs have been got at by a severe infection 5 years back, you're on 5 pills for the blood pressure and you're carrying a guitar, I suppose it is a bit daunting. Never mind - it helped to burn off some of the copious amount of ale that I drunk.

Hi,
Just wanted to add my thanks to Andy, Jillie and the team - what a festival! I really don't know how you manage to do it, year after year - you are true stars! Thank you for everything!

highlights for me: Tracy Curtis, George Simmons, Ember, the session on Sunday with Isambarde, Harriet and the gang, 'Chav' morrisdancing on Sunday night, Peter Collins, Mike Nicholson and many many more...

thanks to everyone who made it wonderful,

Tori

There is nothing like Miskin anywhere else, which is why people keep coming back - and spreading the word! It's just such a perfect start to the festival season, with room to see top-class performers uncluttered by mikes and amps; or join in a craft or dance workshop; or sing or play whatever floats your boat (almost round the clock if you wish); or even just to relax and talk and watch the world go by.

Great to see so many of the regular attenders back again, and so many new faces this year, who nearly all quickly seemed to "get" what Miskin is about and added their own wonderful contribution to that old Miskin magic.

With all the uncertainties of coping with an extra day, huge thanks must go to all the bar staff, kitchen staff and stewards for their extra duties, but especially to Andy and Jillie and their team for their planning beforehand and tireless work during the festival keeping their fingers on the pulse.

WassaiL! V

Oh, and where can I get the dance notation for that Upton-on-Severn "Chav" Dance?

Daughter! That's naughty!! How nice though, to see my baby taking steps into being a grownup amongst all our extended family. I know they got quite a lot of teasing, but it was all very affectionate and I think the general thought was "Ahhhhhhhhhh....."

The music in the little marquee was certainly a wonderful way to go to sleep. Don't understand why other festivals make people stop playing at a certain time. Nothing noisy and intrusive about that sort of sound.

I'd like to go on about how great it was, but I've already said it. Miskin not only re-charges my folkie batteries, but actually reminds me of who I really am, which is priceless

Love Lynne

What a wonderful festival,so great to see so many old friends "I know not so much of the old". Why havn't I been before - I must have missed such a lot. Havn't enjoyed myself so much for ages. I know Geoff felt the same and of course I think Emma enjoyed herself - just a LITTLE!!!!   Big thank you to Sue - enjoyed the dancing. Look forward to seeing you all next Miskin and hopefully some of you before then. Next stop Fox & Hounds.

well, that was my first Miskin, and the only moan I have is about the climb back up to the campsite/carpark.. my dodgy ankle dinna care for it, oh and that kid with the train set, fancy his parents letting him run it all through the night..... need some wrong sort of leaves or conviscate 22yds of rail... that'll sort it it!. Found the cure for insommnia, stay up till 2am listening to the impromptu sessions, stopped only by lack of drink and frostbite!
-so , Monday night I'm in Coventry, and inna sesion with 2/3rds of Isambarde (the small and beautifully formed Jude was zzzzzzzzz), and Coleman Connelly strangling his gooseneck.....it were a tight squeeze in that wee room, and Coleman almost had his ear sawn off by Emma's bow several times..! so you see , the fun continues......
Thank you to Andy & Co, and all who took part.
(and to the funny woman with the red face and the man with the metal uke, cheers for telling me about it)

Must join in with all the praise. Margaret & I plus of course the microbe (Ann) had a truely great time. Can I just mention the mini-sessions that took place in the heated tent, very relaxed and quite intimate little gatherings. When there were only two of us it was like running a folk club again!

Love to you all, David

First visit to Miskin, and I'm still completely stunned. Woke this morning with the sound of those sessions still ringing in my ears.

This was a truly amazing experience. Folk just doesn't get any better.

Thanksw to all for the way Winnie and I were taken into the heart of things by everyone, and what about Andy? I could swear he'd been cloned. He was everywhere at once, dealing with everything, quietly, efficiently, and always with a smile.

Thanks too to all those who worked their socks off so we could just enjoy.

Consider us booked for next year, and I'll swear off chain saws so that I can use the Framus.

One lasting joy is in knowing the people I'm talking to on the Cat. That really is beyond price.

Don & Winnie T.

What a wonderful weekend, Andy & Jillie take so much time for all those little things that make everyone feel great and their team work so hard but always with a smile.
We agree with Rosie - there's nothing else like it.
Miskin is No 1.

Hi all, just to voice my love and thanks to everyone for making my first Miskin a memorable time. The singing was fantastic and it was great to have time to actually talk to people for a change.
The accustics in the cottage are the best ever anywhere and singing in there was an absolute joy. Sunday's late session was great despite the port doing terrible things to my memory!!. had a great time and hope to come again next year. thanks Andy, Jillie and everyone else who made it such a brillient event. Just got back from the pub - too tired to cook!
Wow! I am glad I left Cornwall for Easter! How did they fit all those cars in while I was away! a solid 3 lane traffic jam from Wales to about Okehampton! - all going North!
Thank you Andy and Jillie and crew for the usual dose of fun, frolics, fine food and a fabulous Festival.
Highlights came thick and fast, For Me, Jim McAdams melted me with Westlin winds then disolved me into tears when he followed it with 'I Never Found My Eldorado' Mash were stunning and made me wish that I had stuck to attempting to play an instrument when I was younger - Dad you deserve to be rightfully proud! Great to see and hear Capella again. All those friends I have not seen - some for over a year - it's only now I realise how much Ive missed you all! I am miffed to have missed Hilary Ward (Guru) as I has to steward when she was on, but I know I'll catch up with her soon! - and well done with the raffle - you are a star! Sue White and Herbaceous Border - well me and Amber just loved it - Yippeee I can dance again! Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer Yes Yes Yes more please! - and what a lovely couple! and the reason I soooo looked forward to Miskin was Harriet and Colman - and I was not disappointed. Then there was the Colman & Harriet, Vicki & Jonny, Isambarde session at the end of Sunday's concert what a stunning performance - the rehearsal wasnt half bad either! Oooh and the mega tissue event when Andy got presented with a cross stitch picture of the tune Jonny wrote, entitled 'Andy Jackson'
And the late night in the cottage sing with Peter Collins and Moira Craig last night was the greatest way to end the festival for me.
Thank you all who were there it was fun. A special thanks to the Saturday night misicians in the Marquee who played me to sleep in my camper in the car park. I have never has such a wonderful lullaby!
Great to see you Scooby - after tricking us all into thinking you weren't coming! Keep smiling.
So many magic moments I was not surprised to learn that the absent friends trophy was not awarded this year - how on earth could anyone choose!!!!!!
Great to put faces to more mudcat names!
Extended family of Miskinites I salute you all and thank you for your company and conviviality See you all again soon, if not next Easter!
Cheers, Lucy

Big, big thanks to Andy and Jillie - not only for the festival which was wonderful, but also for being such very special, warm people.

Also special thanks for the wonderful warm welcome I got when I arrived in Nellie Dean's on Thursday night - mostly from our extended Mudcat family - what a wonderful bunch you are. Fondest wishes to Scooby and son (even closer extended family!).

The concert with Isambarde, Jonny and Vicki and Coleman and Harriet was wonderful. Also new, from Robin Burns:

WELCOME TO THE MISKIN FESTIVAL
(Hotel California: The Eagles)

Driving along the motorway at seventy miles an hour
Passing all the cars along the way going just a little bit slower
Looking out for the exit, juction thirty four
Driving into Miskin
To hear the people roar

Welcome to the Miskin Easter festival
Such a lovely place, such a lovely space
    Such happy faces
Plenty of room at the Miskin Easter festival
One time of year, this time of year
    You can find it here

Down the road is the campsite, not close but not too remote
Covered in caravans and campers wedged level on the slope
If it rains it will get slippy and they'll end in a heap
Right down at the bottom
For that slope is steep

The bar is stacked with barrels full of real ale
We are all real ale drinkers so no other beer's for sale
You can always tell a folkie by the tankard hanging on his hip
He always drinks in swallows
Never takes a sip

There's songs of every kind, some of this and some of that
Sung by every kind of voice; level, harp and flat
With instruments in staes of tune from 'out' to 'almost in'
The real ale blends it all
Into one great glorious din

Squeeze boxes squeezing in and out for Morris in the yard
Men and women in coloured clothes, red face and breathing hard
Some say it is passion, some say it's the dance
But the bunkhouse has only single bunks
Nothing's left to chance!

Also, new song (of mine) for Miskin this year, bearing in mind the recent wedding in S.Wales:

Bugeilio'r Maes Gwyn: (Miskin Watch)
(tune)Bugeilio'r gwenith gwyn

Idle days at Easter time
In poor, or clement, weather.
At Miskin in Glamorgan's Vale
We all will meet together.
In "The Cottage" or "The Mill"
We'll all combine our singing.
We'll meet our friends; we'll drink our fill,
We'll set the rafters ringing.

Folk may come from far and wide.
From Porth or Tonypandy.
To toast Crane-Driver and his bride.
And raise a glass to Andy
It's he who keeps us coming here
To him a debt we're owing.
He books the site, he books the 'Acts'
He keeps the be-er flowing.

For long as salt is in the sea.
Long as my hair keeps growing (o.k. poetic licence, it's in the original)
Long as my heart beats in my breast
To Miskin I'll be going.
It is a small but friendly fest.
And we all love it dearly.
That's why so many of 'The Best'
Insist on coming yearly

So once more we'll sup our ale
And raise our voices higher
Once snug inside old Miskin Mill
Around that old log fire.

Message on behalf of Miskin Man:

"Having a lovely time: Wish you were here."

Or, to paraphrase:
The sun is up, the sky is blue
We're singing here, So where are you?
We're at Miskin. Miskin in South Wales.

The forecast is a good weekend
The singing here should never end
We're at Miskin
Where the **** (hell?) are you

Oh, Misery, misery.
By Sunday (night) we'll have barrels two or three.
Most of the beer has been the best
By Sunday night we'll drink the rest
And be singing. Singing in South Wales

MISKIN 2003
(TTTO Llwyn Onn- The Ash Grove)

Verse 1
I went down to Miskin to visit a folk fest,
And see if the weekend held something for me.
I'd seen it on 'Mudcat' and thought it would be best
To visit 'cos some of my weekend was free
So I picked up my camera, and gathered my songbooks
My longing for singing. I gave it its head.
But when I arrived in that small Miskin village
The pub had no 'Hwyl',
And it all seemed quite dead!

Verse 2
I got to 'The Miskin' a pub with a hist'ry
And thought I might meet with someone from 'The 'Cat'
But as I sat drinking, I thought 'tis a myst'ry
These 'folk' are all locals, so where am I at?
But then I was 'pointed' down to the Scout campsite
Where folk were carousing inside Miskin Mill
I got introduced to some folk from the 'Cat site,
And sat there, conversed there, and drank there until....

Chorus
.. There was singing and drinking,
And dancing and drinking
Lace making, and drinking
'Corn dollies' and beer
I had such a time there that now I am thinking
I'll be back at Miskin at Easter next year!

Verse 3
So now that I've found what these folk fests are like, I
Am looking for somewhere new that I can go.
I've heard about Cambridge, Glynllifon and Sidmouth
And dancing with 'Obby 'Orse down at Padstow
But if I can make it
My wallet may take it
To Upton Upon Severn I'm hoping to go.
If I can just get there, I think it would be fair
To give up the booze for the weekend .although.

Chorus
There's singing and drinking,
And dancing and drinking
Lace making, and drinking
'Corn dollies' and beer
I'll have such a time there that now I be thinking
I'll have to do folk fests throughout all the year!

Hi Sue, I've had a word with the local builders and there removing the wall of the church next door Friday afternoon. The organ should be at the Mill by Saturday afternoon but they want it back by Sunday Morning. Oh I volunteered a team of 200 willing lifters to carry it back up the road!!

Yes please, Ali, bring your box and don't worry about any bum notes. And bring the tatters too.

In fact ANYONE if you've got anything to play bring it with you and play for HERBACEOUS BORDER over the weekend. (Or just come and dance)

Sue
