For all you girls who can't get enough of the manly human body (SINSULL understands this reference)be still your hearts. I've been informed that Micca will indeed grace us with his presence again this year.

Kendall, hang on to your groupies, competition is on it's way.

Genie,

"Bruce, if you're bringing (homemade?) crystallized ginger, you're really making me cry that I probably can't make it this year."

Don't cry. It is not homemade ( did that once, 5 lbs for 50 hours work...)
I get 10 - 20 Kilos at the co-op and bring it. Available for donations to the Scholarship Fund.

I will try to bring a few extra slot-headed classical guitars for the auction, as well.

Wish I could do one of those fancy runnin' back and forth across the page html or hmtl thingy's in a nice obnoxiously bright color that said

SILENT AUCTION    BRING GOOD STUFF TO DONATE.    BRING GOOD MONEY OR CHECKBOOKS TO BID

The silent auction is an FSGW fundraiser for the Getaway Scholarship Fund. It allows people to come to this wonderful gathering who otherwise might not be able to swing it. I have benefited from it in the past, and so have several others of us here in Mudville.

Lonesome EJ   said "Made my plane reservations today, sending in my registration. Anyone needing transport from BWI Airport Friday or to BWI on Monday? I am arriving 1:45, and leaving at 3:15 Monday"

Lonesome, it really looks like I can't make it this year (death in the family, plus a humongous milestone happening in my own life this November, complete with its own obstacle course), but I want to say that your post is just the sort of thing that could, if anything could, make it possible for me (and maybe others) to attend.   In addition to all the other hurdles (e.g., finding a reasonably priced and scheduled flight to the general area), the concept of landing in a strange place cross country (or world) and then figuring out how to get from there to the campsite (at what cost??), etc., etc., can be a bit discombobulating.   Anything that smacks of camaraderie, cooperation, carpooling, etc., is a huge plus.

Genie

PS,
Now that I know when the 2008 gathering is, I have my calendar marked well in advance. (Nobody gets to die and nothing catastrophic gets to happen between now and then.)   But I'll be "over the hill" by then, so who cares? ; )

PPS:
SINSULL, Please send me one of those "natural" pics of Kendall.

Bruce, if you're bringing (homemade?) crystallized ginger, you're really making me cry that I probably can't make it this year.

Clairebear, I'm glad you're going. I think you'll find yourself overcoming your shyness very easily in this atmosphere.

Mick, please try to keep Amos in line. (If not, write a song about why not.)

Clairebear. have no fear!! These are WONDERFUL folks, all of 'em!! My first Getaway (2005) I felt a bit the way you describe....didn't quite know what to expect and at times, wondered what the heck was I thinking, traveling all the way across the country to spend the weekend with a bunch of folks I didn't know in a place unfamiliar. Took me all of about 5 minutes to fall in love with everyone! I will never forget what a thrill it was to meet in person, all of these fine folks, who'd previously been names on my computer screen. And many of them, every bit as wonderful, are not mudcatters, but FSGW's, the founders of this fabulous music weekend. They, too, became fast friends! As my once upon a time Kindergartener said on his first day of school, I have a few friends that I know and a WHOLE bunch of friends I don't know yet!

It is with such fondness that I recall memories of my Getaways....and gratitude for the friendships that were formed there and are so deeply treasured now.

It's wise of you Claire, to speak of your shyness. If you write "shy" on your name tag, you won't be shy by the end of the weekend!

KT

SINSULL -- too funny! And thank you for your assurance that I can get away at the Getaway.

Well, I may have some extra space now that my bear suit has gone into a dignified retirement. (Its retirement is the only thing dignified about my bear suit! I'm not shy when I'm in a costume or performing, only when I'm trying to be a social animal.) We do have a big yard...

However, being a proper Episcopalian these days, I'd have to take the knight rather than the headless Jesus, in case Father Keith comes calling. Will he fit in the overhead bin? (No, not Father Keith -- the knight!)

Ms. Bear, the Getaway is a friendly crowd and when you find yourself overwhelmed, you can simply slip away to a quiet corner and decompress.
I am very concerned about your Secret Santa statement that you are trying to pare down and simplify your life. That will simply not do if you plan to spend any time with the Maine contingent.
By the way, can I interest you in a knight in shining armor or a life size Jesus with or without a head? The neighbors are starting to complain.

Claire - the Getaway crowd are a very friendly lot. I'm sure that you will find that the shyness disappears as the weekend goes on.

friday night is a general pot luck supper and get together. Look for the Maineiacs - SINSULL, Ranger 1, TRUBRIT, Kendall and myself. We'll be with Jeri and Barry and some of us, at least, will be wearing Mudcat badges. Just come over and introduce yourself and we'll 'look after' you.

He he he he he ....................

p.s. It helps to be a bit mad to get the best out of the weekend!

My registration form is in today's outgoing mail. It will be my first Getaway -- in fact, pretty much my first experience of anything vaguely like this. I'm excited and also a bit terrified...

...because I'm shy, you see, which could mean I'll spend the entire weekend hiding behind trees or under chairs (or behind a book). And I'm coming alone, and I don't know a soul. And I'm not bringing an instrument save my voice, so nothing to hide behind there.

Oh, and I've never been in that part of the world before (California native).

But I'm coming despite all that...so, any tips?

Tried to sign up on line. Maybe it's me, but it wasn't particularly easy or helpful and didn't make any allowance for upper bunks. There also didn't seem to be anyway to make known choice of room mates.

We'll send in the paper form.

The registration form says that after October 15 "space cannot be guaranteed". But there's almost for sure going to be space, especially if you are willing to take an upper bunk. It says that you can cancel a registration and still get a refund (minus $10) up to October 21.

Bill D's posting of Sept 7 up yonder has a link to a pdf of the registration form, and you can also go to the FSGW Getaway page and get more information there and download the pdf registration form. You can also go that page and simply register on line.

I hope you can make it to this year's Getaway. I enjoyed talking to you there last year.

Unless some one has already pm'd Sins, Jacqui or Tinker to confirm or say "Thanks, but we have some one else who has volunteered this year," would the 'responsible party' let one of us know if you want us to facilitate the auction this year?

And if you do, it would be good to talk to some one involved with set-up in advance. That room is small to accomodate all the tables for the auction, Dick & Susan's booth, the craft booths, artist's CD table, beading, info and registration and as a central place to meet, congregate and sing. It may be the only feasible space for all of that to happen, which means some planning and foresight regarding lay-out is called for. I'm betting some able FSGW minds are already on this one, but thought I would mention it, 'just in case....'

I remember you well, Art.   And I do plan to make Getaway 2008 even if I do also manage to make the 2007 one.   Hope to see you there (and maybe at NW Folklife again?).

If I can book a RT flight using my FF miles, I'll do that, since there's no penalty for cancelling or changing such a booking.   The real Q (aside from flight availability) is how soon I have to sign up and pay for the Getaway and how much of that I'd forfeit if I had to cancel.

There's always something to do around here....This guy will be performing at a special event for FSWG on Tuesday following the Getaway....and there are always more non-FSGW events in the area almost any day in the month. I have no idea yet whether any of the 'locals' are hosting travelers and on what schedules, but it does happen.....some folks have to be back at work Monday...some are ummmm...'older'.

Maybe your inquiry will expose some plans.

I have the same questions Joe does about FSGW membership fee, etc.

Still deciding whether I can/should go this year. Family matters are calling me to be in San Diego as much as possible in the next few months, economic necessity is calling me to be in Seattle, and asset management stuff is telling me to stay home in Portland.   So I'm inclined to put off Getaway for yet another year, but I just don't know yet.

If I do go, I'm still wondering which airport to try to fly into and out of and whether to arrive just before the gathering starts and leave immediately afterwards or extend the trip by a day or two and try to do more while there than just go to the Gathering.   I can use any advice anyone has.

Well, I finally got off my duff and got my airline tickets today. I realized I had enough frequent-flyer miles for a free flight, so it's just costing me a $5 fee - but I won't arrive at National Airport until 11:30 PM Friday. I got a good car rental price from Hertz, so I don't need to scrounge a ride. Leave a light on for me, willya?

I was wondering about the cost of camp this year. I see it's $181 for non-members for three nights, but I was wondering what the member price is and whether it's worthwhile to renew my membership. I'm sure the member price is listed somewhere, but I can't find it.

Membership in FSGW is $31 a year, so I''m hesitating to join since I can't make it to other FSGW activities. But tell me the member price for the Getaway, so I'll know.

See y'all soon.

-Joe-
