Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: GUEST,Dani Date: 06 Apr 08 - 03:29 AM I suggest we look at the posting times on this thread when choosing bunkmates.......... Doesn't anyone in this place SLEEP anymore?! Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Barry Finn Date: 06 Apr 08 - 03:15 AM Well, we had 5 bunks in one room one yr & Mick took up 3 of them, all lower ones too, and none of us would sleep with him either. Amos tried to keep the window open all night cause of him. The remaining 4 of us had to make do with the 2 bunks that he left us, pretty hard when they're both are uppers but we found them to be comfy enough. Does that tell you how big they are, the bunks, not Mick! now this yr if Micks gonna be in the same room again, I want the arangement to be one Mick & at least 2 of the other 4 bunkers need to be female, Mick's not gonna pull that stunt again on Amos & EJ, I was told that they're not going for it. Barry |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 06 Apr 08 - 03:04 AM Sorta. Ennyhoo, Mick's the one what suggested it. How big are these bunks, anyway? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 06 Apr 08 - 02:51 AM One bunk? You planning to practice being firewood? Do you have any idea how much bunk Big Mick takes up? A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 06 Apr 08 - 12:59 AM Big Mick said {{{OK,......strictly in the interest of my beloved Getaway, ....... and only because I am a big hearted guy who wants to help ...... I will bite the bullet and bunk with Genie, Dani, and Claire. It's alright, I don't mind, and it should ease the burden on figuring out rooms. If KT makes it, she can come on in too. Don't thank me, I just do these things because they are the right thing to do.......]]] In the immortal words of Amanda Wingfield, Mick, "You're a Christian martyr! That's what you are, a Christian martyr." *g* Soo generous. ; x But is that one bunk or two for the 4 (5) of us? ; ) Thanks for offering to bring the Baby Taylor. That would probably be very nice to have around. If I can manage to book a retirement home gig in the NC Triangle area or even close to the camp right after the Getaway, I'll probably need to have one of my guitars with me, but that's still up in the air. BTW, I can handle a Martin D28 or D35, as long as the strings aren't too heavy and/or I don't have to do more than a song or two. Something about Martins, makes playing a bigger guitar easier. Bouzoukis - well, that's a whole nuther story. This oughta be fun! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Tinker Date: 05 Apr 08 - 11:52 PM Wow ! It's April and I go away for one night and this thread just morphs into being. Somehow I'm feeling like we just jomped over spring and summer and it should be heading into fall NOW. I will find a way and once again anyone who is passing through New Jersey is welcome to share a night in our chaos... Dani, it was warm when we tripped our way up to Maine -- well maybe not the ocean waters, but think of the wonderful lobster those waters provided.... All of you who have promised and not shown WILL show this year. Now I'm going to go and watch some old video and dream.... Love ya all ..... |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: kendall Date: 05 Apr 08 - 07:40 PM Jacqui and I shared a room last year and it worked out just fine except for the bagpipes just outside the door in a quiet area. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: ClaireBear Date: 05 Apr 08 - 07:10 PM I brought just my voice last year and was totally happy. I had offers of loaner instruments, but I had enough to do just singing. Claire (who is OK with a top bunk and didn't find her cabin at all stuffy) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 05 Apr 08 - 07:03 PM Thanks for the info on airports, carpooling, earplugs, etc., folks. Sounds like I'm really gonna be able to make it this year. BTW, how important is it to bring our axes with us? I don't like to take my old Martin with me on planes, especially when it's not a non-stop flight and I can't take her on board with me. But I have trouble playing anything that doesn't have a narrow neck and light-gauge strings. Are there usually a lot of different guitar types that people will let others use occasionally in a jam, sing-around, or the concert? I may bring my itty bitty Ibanez, since I can take it on board. Doesn't make a lot of noise, but it's very portable. Or maybe I'll just bring the Sigma. The action and sound aren't as good as the real Martin, but it would be much less a heartbreak if it got lost, stolen, or broken. What do you other 'foreigners' do? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 05 Apr 08 - 06:55 PM Dani..we do have a place on the registration form to list preferences for certain things...who you 'want' to room with, quiet spot....etc. But 40 years experience has told us it is good to have most of the allocation in the hands of one person who knows both the camp and most of the people. People DO put in little notes with requests, and we do reasonably well that way.... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: John MacKenzie Date: 05 Apr 08 - 06:03 PM That's OK for them as knows the camp Dani, and then again you might need a spreadsheet for those that DON'T want to share with a particular someone! G |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: GUEST,Dani Date: 05 Apr 08 - 05:57 PM Bill, I was thinking about doing it ahead, online. Make big ol' spreadsheet, and as people register they can request to put their names on the bunk/room they want, you just label them as needed. Dani |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: kendall Date: 05 Apr 08 - 05:33 PM Having spent years at sea, I can handle a top bunk, but I can not handle snoring. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: John MacKenzie Date: 05 Apr 08 - 05:32 PM Big Mick runs an excellent airport shuttle service Genie :) G |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 05 Apr 08 - 05:32 PM Dani...sounds good until early arrivers get settled in in a 'comfy' way, and folks who arrive at 11PM can't figger out where to go, or they can't find 3 bunks together...etc. It is 'possible' to trade around a teeny bit, among those who are already there...but best to have most of it planned when quarter are tight.. and Genie...we usually provide ear-plugs! (started a few years ago when we had some open dorms and several wold-class snorers.) And yes, we do try to link those flying in with locals or anyone driving in at the right times. We 'usually' can find someone a ride. Post when you have flight times set. BWI airport is often best choice, but Dulles and Reagan National have been used. A few times, it has actually worked better for someone to go into Philadelphia or Newark to meet someone driving in from that area. (Skarpi may need something like that this year) A few folks like to rent cars...or have 9 guitars and plans to stay around for 2 weeks..*grin*) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Big Mick Date: 05 Apr 08 - 05:20 PM Yes, Genie, there will be carpooling. Probably the best airport would be Baltimore, or if it works better you can fly into DC. There will be plenty of Catters coming that way. I would pick you up, but I am likely going to be driving in from Michigan. I might fly and rent a car, we will see what gas prices look like as we get closer. Accomodations are kind o catch as catch can. I like bottom bunks cause I am not called Big Mick for nothing. This is going to be a great Getaway weekend. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 05 Apr 08 - 04:59 PM Well, I don't mind an upper bunk (I need the exercise), and I'd love to be in an all-night jam cabin -- where snoring wouldn't be such a problem unless it's louder than a walrus. If I'm really tired, I can usually sleep through about anything. Plus, I have ear plugs. I just hope the cabins aren't so hot and stuffy that my asthma would keep me awake. I sort of gathered there are not co-ed cabins, but it doesn't matter to me if I'm with all females or not. It's prob'ly gonna be too cold in the Baltimore area in October to be running around in my skivvies anyway. I still need advice about airports and ground transportation, though. The plane ticket I can get with FF miles, I think, but I'd like not to spend and arm and a leg on taxis, shuttles, or car rental (makes it hard to walk and play guitar). Do Mudcatters set up any kind of carpooling network to connect Getaway participants? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: GUEST,Dani Date: 05 Apr 08 - 02:49 PM Why not just post a map with bunk numbers and have people fight over spots them selves? Designate a few quiet/kids/late/top/bottom/ etc and do first-come-first-served? Just a thought... 'cause I would think assigning is a thankless task..... But I'll send thanks in advance anyway : ) Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 05 Apr 08 - 11:27 AM "What sorts of things would that be, Bill? " well, Genie...like who stays up late, who snores loudest, who has kids, who doesn't get along with certain people, who is bashful at bedtime...etc...combined with who can't climb into an upper bunk! The hardest job in the entire known Universe is looking a a map of the cabin layouts, a list of registered people, and moving names around until it seems almost possible! (I 'think' it is harder than the workshop juggling...but others may differ) |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Janie Date: 05 Apr 08 - 01:28 AM Jeez! April 4th and here we are at 100 posts. By the date of the Getaway, this thread will be contending with MOAB! All youse people who keep promising and then not showing up 'cuz life gets in the way - this year, we are holding you to it. Get a life or get rid of the life you got if it ain't gonna let you show up at the mostest, bestest, loveliest, warmest, ...est gathering of people who love to sing and play and flirt, and eat bad food together that ever was. (I'm jealous cuz this is the first time I have been less than certain I can go since the first one I attended.) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 05 Apr 08 - 01:16 AM Bill D, you said, "This may not be an issue, but unlike that last 'cold' camp, which had over 350 'possible' spaces, we have to juggle things here." What sorts of things would that be, Bill? And will it be a workshop for us novices? G |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 04 Apr 08 - 11:50 PM There's nothing "rough" about a bunk in aheated cabin, Truebrit!! Well, there is the snoring people, but, let's not be too elitist here!! It's like getting married four times over! A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: GUEST Date: 04 Apr 08 - 11:49 PM "It has a certain character that seems to be native to the state." I'll say! Bill, sign me up for an upper! It's warmer up there : ) Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: TRUBRIT Date: 04 Apr 08 - 10:36 PM Being a wimp who does not like to rough it, I shall be hoteling again which means whatever bunk I might have used will be available for whomever likes to sleep in wooden bunks with snoring people!!! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 04 Apr 08 - 10:05 PM Artbrooks...I guess Charlie Baum doesn't have the PDF for this year up yet. We usually don't expect money until Summer...July or August or so. Charlie is probably very busy until Passover has....ummm...passed over. Look for news in the next few weeks....I don't think there will be a problem holding off a bit. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Midchuck Date: 04 Apr 08 - 09:14 PM I don't mind an upper bunk if it doesn't have to be over my wife. She'll kick me, or worse, in the night. I just know she will. Peter |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Lonesome EJ Date: 04 Apr 08 - 09:09 PM I've always wanted to do a bicycle tour of the Maine coast. And I'm planning to make the Getaway again. Number 4 for me. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: artbrooks Date: 04 Apr 08 - 08:41 PM Just BTW, Bill...the registration form that the link on the Getaway page leads to is for 2007. I just rejoined via PayPal - can we use the 2007 form to send in a deposit, and how much is the deposit for '08? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: artbrooks Date: 04 Apr 08 - 08:28 PM I spent a v-e-r-y long time in Maine one August weekend...it snowed. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 04 Apr 08 - 07:58 PM One of those Maniacal songs, I presume? ----------------------------------------------------------- Everyone...DO remember sleeping arangements at this camp are 44.053% UPPER bunk beds! If we get near capacity, decisions must be made. Last year was not a particular problem; but folks who couldn't come in November, and who were ill, and who had to save up money, and who just 'didn't get around to it' are talking about coming this year. This is a camp used largely by Methodist youth, who are assigned rooms and are segregated by sex...with ALL beds used. I believe absolute capacity is...ummm...202? But we have more...ummm...'mature' attendees, many of whom cannot negotiate upper bunks. This may not be an issue, but unlike that last 'cold' camp, which had over 350 'possible' spaces, we have to juggle things here. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: kendall Date: 04 Apr 08 - 07:23 PM Dani, my dear, I will be as specific as I can. I live here because I was born here. I was born here because I wanted to be near my Mother. I stay here out of habit. Some other reasons: 1. No earthquakes 2. No tornadoes 3. No brush fires 4. No mudslides. 5. No hurricanes 6. The second lowest crime rate in the country.(Second only to Vermont. A beautiful, civilized state but no lobsters or ocean. 7. No poison snakes, spiders, or scorpions. 8. No dangerous animals. However, the state is getting warmer every year, and it is very hard to buy a car without A/C. I love Maine. It has a certain character that seems to be native to the state. A panache' if you will. Grand state of Maine Proudly we sing To tell your praises to the land To shout your praises til the echos ring Should fate unkind send us to roam The scent of the fragrant pine The tang of the salty sea will call us home. Old Pine Tree state, your woods fields and hills Your lakes, streams and rockbound coast Will ever fill out hearts with thrills And though we seek far and wide Our search will be in vain To find a fairer spot on earth than Maine Maine Maine. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bobert Date: 04 Apr 08 - 06:39 PM Well, gol danged... I was thinkin' that a Maine Getaway would be real refreshing... Plus, we wouldn't constantly be tripping over them FSGWer's portable oxegen bottles... You know them folks couldn't find Maine if it was down the hall from their TV rooms... (Now ya' done it, Bobert... This is gonna cost you...) Just ignore this post, please... b;~) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: ClaireBear Date: 04 Apr 08 - 06:19 PM Ah, I was hoping that was it. In that light, I am very much looking forward to this year's easterly/downeasterly jaunt -- blackflies, mosquitoes, frostbite, mud, incendiary hot spells, inedible crustacea and all! (Would Maine before Getaway or after be better -- errr, less tortuous? You have all summer to answer that.) Claire |
