Liz

You can see why Waterloo Bonfire Society are generally held to be a bit soft and modern by us crusty blighters in the older Societies.

According to the landlord the Coppers accepted a challenge to drink him out of Harveys and made a good start, but couldn't quite see off the 1,000 plus pints in the cellar.

Bryan is being very restrained in not pointing out that 'sentimental' could have been more accurately rendered as 'thoroughly trousered'.

It was indeed a superb evening. From where I was sitting at the side of the stage, it was a joy to see the looks on the faces of the audience.

It didn't stop when the club finished. Some of the Young Coppers were singing on the pavement outside till nearly midnight in comepetition with one of the bonfire societies who seemed to be holding a small procession inside the Arms.

What a fantastic evening! My thanks to Valmai & all of Lewes club for putting on such a treat for us. The Coppers, really enjoy themselves and bring their own 'brand' of singing and songs with them. Just wonderful to see the blend of Old & New and encouraging to know that our Folk Tradition will be carried on with the aid and dynamics of this Folk Family. And you managed to get all 9 of them on the stage in a packed house!! Well done and Thank You!

That was a terrific evening. My apologies to everyone for coming over sentimental, but it was very moving to hear those voices that are so clearly from the line that brought us Bob, Ron and Jim singing again in the heart of Sussex.

And they carried on on the pavement outside afterwards - a tribute to the warmth of the evening and the powers of Harveys Best Bitter (the Old is very good in this cold weather as well).

Thanks to everyone who performed and apologies to those I couldn't put on for lack of time, especially Liz Randall.

That's the only spare ticket now. If we resell it you'll certainly get a refund.

Don't forget about the floor spot!

Tootle pip,

Valmai

I might have a spare ticket with me due to the Rugby - not asking for refund Valmai, that would be silly. Might be able to find someone to come along at the last minute anyway!

Yes, you will be. We'll do give all visitors a floor spot, but may have to limit people to one song at a time.

If all goes according to plan, Harveys Old and well as Best Bitter will be on sale at the Lewes Arms from early October.

All the best,

Valmai

Regarding personnel, I've just had this message from John Copper:

'Hello Valmai

As far as we know at this juncture you will have the whole shebang: Jon, Jill, Mark, Andy, Sean, Ben Lucy, Tom and myself if we are spared!

Good wishes,
John Copper'

PS Couldn't agree more that the Young Coppers sound like the Copper family ,having last heard them at Whitby several times - mind you, can't see why they wouldn't :-)

Slaps wrist for not looking up the website to check the details ... but was just playing Devil's Advocate really...

Thanks for the reminder Valmai. Not really sure that I can make the Ballad Forum at the moment, as we've got a club night down here in Guildford on the Friday with Shona Kipling and Damien O'Kane , there's the National Gathering up at C#House on the Saturday (and also Lester Simpson's "Standing in Line" at Cranleigh the same evening). So at the moment, although the spirit is very willing, I'm trying to work out whether I have the stamina to attempt all four in one weekend !!!

There will be a mixture of both generations, but I haven't been given a roll-call yet.

The young Coppers sang at the Lewes Royal Oak club earlier this year and were splendid. They sounded unquestionably like the Copper Family, not like a group of people who just happened to have picked up some Copper songs.

Surreysinger, may I respectfully draw your attention to our ballad forum with Craig Morgan Robson on Sunday 11th. November, the day after CMR's all-day vocal harmony workshop and performance at the Lewes Arms?

Tootle pip,

Valmai (Lewes)

One point Valmai - is this Copper Family (first generation) or the Young Coppers ?? I'm assuming the former ?? (Says she not having accessed the link).
