Subject: RE: BS: In the Valley of the Blind... From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Oct 07 - 07:02 PM Eggzackly. H.G. Wells has a good story about a normal man who ends up in the Valley of the Blind. He is eventually commanded to conform by having his eyes plucked out...for his own good, of course. Only on this condition can he be allowed to marry and to become a full-fledged citizen in the Valley of the Blind. After much consideration...because he is deeply in love with a local woman and wants to marry her...he decides instead to flee the valley and face the risk of his own death in the snowy mountain passes...preferring to die with his sight intact than to join the ranks of the willfully Blind. If he returns, they will kill him. Wells was, as usual, drawing an analogy to the common ways and shortcomings of human society. A very apt one. |
