Bert, I looked into enrolling Morgan in the pbskids birthday club. I was outraged to find it cost about $40 for a membership for which they get a few newsletters (all for stuff on the eastern slope) and their name scrolled on the b-day notices on tv. THIS is what I wrote to them. No reply so far:

I understand the need for funds from members in order to keep things on the air, but I do not understand why children are made to pay forty dollars to become members of the Kids' Club and see their name on the birthday roll. I was going to sign my grandson up for it, but I don't feel right doing that when I know children in a lower income bracket may not be able to be so "privileged." Is there any kind of provision to provide for children in need who watch Kids' Club shows and want to "belong?" I really think you could at least have a sliding fee, esp. when it comes to families with only one parent and/or multiple children. It just seems discriminatory to me and that is NOT what I expect of PBS.

Not just the kids. The level of English spoken by US newscasters is disgusting.

The other day I saw a teddy bear with a talk-box in it. To my amazement and joy the phrases generated by the talk-box were in English, not American, and reasonably well-accented English too.

Jeanie - I absolutely agree with you.

Bert, I agree with you. It's not only PBS, but the broadcasters of children's TV in the UK, too, who need to "hire someone who can talk", as you say.

I know I'm going to sound like "Disgusted of Tonbridge Wells", but I am appalled by the slovenly, poor speech of the children's TV presenters - especially the people who act as a link between programmes. Here is a possibility for good role models that has been totally thrown out of the window.

Everything is also so frantic, and there is little opportunity for children to quietly and simply listen and absorb. I think there was an attempt in the past year or so to revive the story-telling slot "Jackanory" - but I'm not sure that it came back for long.

I do drama work particularly with children aged under 11, and it seems to me that their capacity for calm, quiet, attentive listening and absorbing (and accompanying use of their imagination) is decreasing year by year. No doubt there are other factors to explain this, but I'm sure that the current general style of children's TV (there are some good exceptions) has a lot to answer for.

It's a sorry state of affairs when kids are being taught by televisions instead of people.

I'd say switch over to Sesame Street and quit worrying about Barney. Everyone knows dinosaurs can't count.

I have a video of him singing, I love you, you love me...then a series of gunshots and a sweet little girl's voice yelling, "Shutthefuckup"!

Then he shouldn't be trying to teach our kids to count, let him stick to his "I love you" stuff which he can manage.

Heard today on TV. "pbskids dot owug"

Jimminy PBS hire someone who CAN TALK!!!

Then a couple of weeks ago Barney was trying to teach kids to count. He had some numbers on cardboard disks and was placing them i=on some stepping stones.

"1" went on the first step - well he got that right but that was the limit of his ability because he put the "2" on the THIRD STEP, and the "3" on the FIFTH step. No wonder kids don't understand math.
