Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 04 May 08 - 02:51 AM Sounds like you'll be okay for a quick getaway. I doubt if they'll be able to trace you. You could work under a false name - tell them you're Martin Carthy, or Bob Dylan. Just keep the taxi running outside, I always do..... |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: GUEST,GS in Devon Date: 03 May 08 - 03:47 PM There is a Folk Festival in Malta on the last two days I am there so new experience eh? See y'all in a couple of weeks...signing off... Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 03 May 08 - 10:42 AM he's a better man by far cos you're a woman in a bowler hat you can't fool me (contemporary variation on a traditional theme) |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 03 May 08 - 07:06 AM Do you think Martin will enter the competition? |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 03 May 08 - 07:05 AM Martin Simpson! who is that :-) |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Backwoodsman Date: 03 May 08 - 07:03 AM Sorry Les, not a patch on Martin Simpson. :-) :-) |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 03 May 08 - 06:53 AM >>when does it have to be done for?<< When there is sufficient demand for it to happen >>Would that disqualify it?<< Yes Just so that you can practice Mike Sammy's Bar |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 03 May 08 - 06:39 AM I'm working on something now (always working on something - its a real butchers shop at the moment) - I'll send it ya when it becomes almost presentable - when does it have to be done for? And where would we send our admissions. I'm not planning on putting it on a cd, but I've been thinking of putting it on You tube, when I get it within shooting distance of being 'right'. Would that disqualify it? Have a nice holiday Mike. I've always wanted to go and see the Maltesers. Drink a single malt to the memory of Ted Moult, looking out over the Bay of Malta. haul away the daighso! Or however its spelt. Is Sammy's Bar still there? Remember above all you are a folksinger and there is a tradition to be upheld. |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 03 May 08 - 05:50 AM Have a nice time in Malta Mike. |

Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 02 May 08 - 12:16 PM >>I wasn't a song about Autism.<< It wasn't a song about Autism I wanted. The song can be about anything. |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 02 May 08 - 09:25 AM I wasn't a song about Autism. The song can be about anything. Just that any money made would go to the Autistic Society Which one is that them BWM? |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Backwoodsman Date: 02 May 08 - 09:06 AM John Conolly has already written probably The Definitive Autism Song (IMHO, of course). |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 01 May 08 - 08:04 PM There was a geezer with a foreign name who used to advertise every week in the melody maker asking for someone to write a song on this very subject. I knew nothing about it, so of course I didn't write anything for a year or two - but time passed and I took a teaching contract for a few months at a special school for autistic children. Its a while back, but I rather think I wrote something for the guy - cos he was still running the advert. As I remember he put an insert into Bandit - the songwriters worksheet. I'm pretty sure I wrote something, but I know I never got a reply from him. I'd like to say I can dig it out, but I have no idea what I wrote. Its not a disablity that's easy to explain - like Jake the Peg, with a extra leg.........! It was 1995 I was at the school I still have my computer in the garage from then. I'll have a look. best wishes and thanks for all that luv - folkie dave and jack campin (loitering within tent) are saying nasty things about me on other threads (what little bitches!) - so I appreciate it. al |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 01 May 08 - 05:23 PM Phew, nobody interested. Thank goodness for that :-) |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 01 May 08 - 03:47 PM OK anybody up for "Write a song for Autism" The song can be about anything, but must be a newly written song not appearing on any CD already. Finals to be held at the Festival Hall, Market Rasen. All entries need to be sent to me on CD and must be decent quality. The ten best (based on tune/lyrics and likeabilty) will be in the final. Tickets £5 The prize will be 25% of the door (after costs) for the winner and the 2 runners up, will receive 10% each of the door. How much will that be, I hear you ask? Well the fezzy Hall will hold at least 200, so if 200 turnedup, then that could be a fair amount for the winners and also for the Autistic Society. All remaining money made on the night will go to the Autistic Society. |

Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 01 May 08 - 11:39 AM Someone was saying on the s website, if they can't come up with better songs than this, they ought to discontinue it. Perhaps he had a point. You gotta admit, there was some weird stuff being written. I got a bit cheesed off with people going on about the green fields of Lincolnshire - what colour did they expect - pink! That American guy who was a judge came up to me, came up to me last time, and said - I liked your song - but really you wrote two songs - you were singing two songs at the same time, and it didn't sound right. I've often wondered what he meant since. At the time, I just thought - he's American.... I should have told him its an old Navaho Indian trick - singing two songs at the same time. It fools the buffalo - makes them feel surrounded. |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Backwoodsman Date: 01 May 08 - 10:50 AM Why has it bitten the dust? What's the justification? It's not a televised 'phone-in-and-vote' type of event, it's judged by a panel of judges on the night, so there shouldn't be any of the problems encountered by the TV competitions. Presumably another manifestation of the Beeb bowing gutlessly to PC-ism Gone Mad? |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 01 May 08 - 09:07 AM I know was aimed at GS |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Georgiansilver Date: 01 May 08 - 08:08 AM LOL @ Al |

Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 01 May 08 - 07:08 AM I used to have a telecaster and just watch it for long periods sometimes. a thing of beauty........ |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Georgiansilver Date: 01 May 08 - 05:50 AM Was being a little flippant Les my friend.....Live music comes before Tele every time. |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 01 May 08 - 02:41 AM >>watch tele instead<< How awful |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Georgiansilver Date: 01 May 08 - 02:36 AM Well I did get in the final ten once and a 'second place' the following year...but would keep entering just for the buzz of it...sad it's gone..but then....what happens to anything that is of any real worth these days? Health and Safety...peoples welfare.....childrens rights etc etc.......best stay at home and watch tele instead! |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Rasener Date: 30 Apr 08 - 05:39 PM Maybe Mrs Sooz should introduce "Write A Song For Lincolnshire Folk" |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Big Al Whittle Date: 30 Apr 08 - 03:04 PM Certainly made me write some stuff I wouldn't have done. Dunno whether that's good or bad. I believed in the stuff I was doing at the time. But it was illusory - most of what I did was rubbish. The Skegness song, I still do and its still on the skeggy website. By Witham side, I get requested, but I don't like very much. That one never even made the final. It was fun meeting the other folkies. We must meet up some other places. Perhaps we should hire the place once a year and do a concert in comemoration. I wonder how much it would cost. I used to like that night out. there was a great chip shop in Spilsby, I always used to start the night out there. And those cells were the spookiest dressing room I have EVER been in. |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 30 Apr 08 - 02:11 PM Sad news today - the BBC lawyers have decided that the "no competitions" rule will include the "Write a Song For Lincolnshire Competition". Another good folk event bites the dust. |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Banjo-Flower Date: 31 Dec 07 - 11:22 AM yes it does! try singing it to the lincolnshire poacher tune Gerry |

Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 30 Dec 07 - 09:07 AM Dick Appleton (winner of this years competition) was on the radio this morning writing a song to order from listeners suggestions. Didn't hear the finished product but its all good publicity for folk. |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 28 Dec 07 - 02:29 PM We think so too! |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Herga Kitty Date: 28 Dec 07 - 12:54 PM Thanks for the link, Sooz - good songs and interesting subjects! And well done to the sponsors for the collaboration between local radio, the MU, local heritage and local folk music organisers and performers. You really are lucky in Lincolnshire.... Kitty |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: goatfell Date: 28 Dec 07 - 11:43 AM shouldn't there be a song about susages |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Pig William Date: 28 Dec 07 - 06:27 AM Thanks for the reminder, Sooz, I shall enjoy listening to that. I didn't enter this year (didn't see any info on the website until it was too late) but I'm looking forward to hearing all the songs. I thoroughly agree that BBC Radio Lincs deserve much credit for this competition. It's a great institution and produces some excellent songs. Well worth travelling halfway across the country to participate! Cheers, Mark. |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 28 Dec 07 - 03:48 AM Lots of people around here are quick enough to comment when the BBC do something wrong (and quite rightly) but how about giving credit where it is due? |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: GUEST,Mark Addison Date: 27 Dec 07 - 01:41 PM Well said Sooz. It's not so much the winner, as the fact that the event exists that matters. (But then I would say that wouldn't I!) People should certainly let the Beeb know that they enjoy it on lincolnshire@bbc.co.uk |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: Sooz Date: 27 Dec 07 - 04:31 AM For many years the BBC has been involved with this competition and provided the prize money. It has, as BBP says, produced some excellent songs over the years. The broadcast in the link is a programme made up of the finalists of this years competition. Have a listen, and let the BBC know that you've enjoyed it! |
Subject: RE: Write a Song for Lincolnshire From: RamblinStu Date: 26 Dec 07 - 07:49 PM What ever song wins, it should be in 'Two Flats" Sorry about that, Stuart Pendrill |
