Subject: ADD Version: One for the Money From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Apr 08 - 03:31 AM Hi, Danna - I combined your two threads - one will do just fine. I ripped my Fred Holstein CD to MP3 and put the CD in deep, dark storage, but I think I found pretty good evidence that the song was written by Travis Edmonson, of Bud & Travis. I haven't found a Bud & Travis recording of the song, but I did find the one by Holstein, and another by the Highwaymen with Ann Mayo Muir (before Bok-Muir-Trickett). -Joe- Well, I decided I couldn't live without that Ann Mayo Muir recording, so I downloaded the Highwaymen album. Here's my transcription:
One for the Money |
Subject: ADD: One For the Money From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Apr 08 - 01:48 AM ONE FOR THE MONEY (Travis Edmonson?? - as sung by Fred Holstein) CHORUS One for the money, Sing for a penny; Two for the show, Any song that you know; Three to get ready, The wide road is calling; And four to go, It's been good to know you; And four to go, we've a long ways to go. As I travel all over this land One sad thing that find: When the wide road calls You must leave friends and all, Leaving a song behind For a while, Leaving a song behind. CHORUS One for the money, Sing for a penny; Two for the show, Any song that you know; Three to get ready, The wide road is calling; And four to go, It's been good to know you; And four to go, we've a long ways to go. Some value money, Some value fame, Some value lovers and wine; But a song and a friend Around each turn and bend Are riches I'd rather be mine Every time, Riches I'd rather be mine. CHORUS One for the money Sing for a penny Two for the show Any song that you know Three to get ready The wide road is calling And four to go It's been good to know you; And four to go, we've a long ways to go. When I am gone May this song linger on, Its echo fall soft on your ear.* May your riches increase And you all live in peace And your happiness grow every year, My friend, Your happiness grow every year. CHORUS One for the money, Sing for a penny; Two for the show, Any song that you know; Three to get ready, The wide road is calling; And four to go, It's been good to know you; And four to go, we've a long ways to go. Transcribed by ear from Fred Holstein: A Collection (*I hear: "And rest all soft on your ear," but it doesn't seem right) Also recorded by the Highwaymen and by Joe & Eddie - and, as shown below, by the Hootenanny Singers. By the way, Ann May Muir does the vocals on the Highwaymen recording - their "Hootenanny" album.

Subject: Lyric add: One for the money From: GUEST,Owlkat/Danna Date: 09 Apr 08 - 06:06 AM Alright, So I can't find the damn song online. I can still put in the lyrics, and throw down the gauntlet. It is American, it was written in the '60's and I can't get the first name "Bob" out of my head. Alaska's Bob Pavitt? As I travel all over this land Ch: It's one (g)for the money (em). I'll sing (c/am) for a penny (d) Two (g) for the show (em) Any song (c/am)that I know (d) Three (g) to get ready (em) The wide/long (c/am)road is calling (d) And (g)four to go (em), it's been good to know (d)you And (g)four to go(em), we've a (am)long (d)way to go. Oh (f) (g)... As (g)I travel (f)all (g)over this land (f) There is one sad thing that I find, When the wide road calls you must leave friends and all Leaving (g) a song (d) behind, (g)for awhile(dm) Leaving (am)a song (d) behind. (g) Some value riches and some value fame. Some value women and wine But a song and a friend round each turn of the bond Are riches I'd rather were mine, everytime Are riches I'd rather were mine. After I'm gone may my song linger on And its echoes fall soft on your ear May your friends(?) increase, may your joys never cease, And your happiness grow every year, my friend Your happiness grow every year Okay, I've done my bit. It's been two and a half hours since I got swept up in the madness that is research, and found bupkiss. NEXT! Cheerio, Owlkat/Danna |
Subject: RE: Origins: One for the Money (sing for a penny) From: Owlkat Date: 09 Apr 08 - 04:37 AM Oh why do I do this. Grrrr. I just had to check out one more thread, and I know this song. I've got the author somewhere, and it is driving me barking mad. I think it might have been Bob Gibson or another big folkie from the 60's. I sang it in youth group conventions when I was a teen-ager and the words are permanently implanted in my brain until the day I die. I've been searching for an hour that I should have been sleeping and in bed, darn you. But seriously, I will fid it or find someone who does. I know it was done by Peter Paul and Mary. Here's a site for it, but, naturally, there is no author credited. www.drinkingsongs.net/html/books-and-manuscripts/1970s/1970s-alpha-gamma -delta-songbook/index.htm I'm going to look one more place for now, but don't despair. Where there's OCD, there's hope, Cheerio, Owlkat/Danna |
Subject: Origins: One for the Money (sing for a penny) From: GUEST,heritage harbour bc Date: 08 Apr 08 - 05:11 PM I am looking for the writer of this song. It was sung by Fred Holstein and by the Highwaymen and the Hootenanny Singers. I have found the lyrics on-line, but no mention of where it came from or who wrote it. |
