Yes -- I remember The Petticoat Line. I always loved the radio--loved pop music etc as well but thought loving the radio was normal. I moved into a flat with some girls and just assumed everyone else tuned in to Radio 4 all the time -- what a shock to realize their morning radio program of choice was ..... TONY BLACKBURN!!!!!!! Oh horrors!

One of the nice things about living in Maine is the Saturday morning NPR line up is nearly as good as the old Radio 4 - Car Talk - then the political comedy program with Carl Castle and Peter Seigel and then Michael Feldman -- can't be bad.

Sadly missed. I'm old enough to remember his dog food commercial on British TV in the early 1970s:

Another of those programmes was "The Petticoat Line" - anybody remember that one - around 1970?

They had a one min obit on BBC Radio 4's PM last evening.

Ah, nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

I am very pleased to say the ABC Radio National has these things on at 5.30 in the morning when I'm driving to work.

Monday - Just a Minute

Tuesday - variable; once was Hancock's Half Hour, then Many a Slip, now some more recent programme

Wednesday - My Music

Thursday - My Word

Friday - The Goons

Saturday - sounds like some stand up comedian these days, used to be The Navy Lark - I haven't had to work so many Saturdays lately, I'm pleased to say.

Ye Gods I was talking about him two days ago. About how he recommended going to a party with a good bottle of wine and to stop other people drinking it, leaving him with the plonk, he would put a candle in the bottle.

I also remnember making a sponge cake to his directions, how to whisk the eggs with a fork. Best sponge I ever made.

RIP Clement. I'll miss you.

I shall miss him -- the 'old' Radio 4 is one of the things I miss most about 'home' living here in the US -- buit I have to remind myself the old Radio 4 doesn't exist in the UK anymore......

Even here (Upper Canuckistan), those Just a Minute, My Word, Radio shows played on CBC radio for years and kept me sane and funny through years of animation.

The dry, dry, delivery of that wonderful man was inspiring. It made me realize how much of humour is counterpoint. To deliver the arrow to the target, you must fire away from the bullseye, and let the audience be clever, and in on the joke.

With you 100% on that one Gurney. TV today is aimed at a young audiance. Stupid soap operas that bored people live their life through. Male game show hosts that speak like women and wear pink suits. And so called super models and singers boast their failing ratings by going on a chat show and laughing about getting caught with hard drugs and getting let off. Those two creeps, Jonathan Ross and that other thing should have received a life ban by the BBC for what they did a few months back.

A sad sad world.

The news prompted me to look at some fragments of 'Just a Minute' on YouTube. Brings it home how television has subsided over the past 20 years. Those panel programmes were manned by very bright people.

Just a Minute, My Music, University Challenge, My Word, gone.
Has anyone seen a programme that entertains on that sort of intellectual level recently?



Oh dear, I sound like an intellectual snob.
I just get tired of TV full of perverts, monsters, sex, and guns.
Oh, and 'adult' cartoons.

Met him a few times through a friend. He was one of natures gentlemen. A sad loss indeed. He had a full life and it was a great life.
