i didn't know half of this stuff, to quote a very old Doonesbury...

But his language stuff was top notch, and I'll miss him.

I religiously read his "On Language" column and managed to ignore his political views. Funny, what was most important to me (and other readers) was ignored in the obit.

I have folders full of "On Language" cut out from the Times magazine section. (From the days when I read the NY Times every Sunday no matter how difficult it was to get in the little towns in Maine that I lived in.)

No columnist could match his clever, erudite and brilliant way with words. What a loss! In today's Times' Magazine Section, a note at the foot of his column said he was "on hiatus for a few weeks" - I thought he was on vacation............

I enjoyed his "On Language" column in The Times. On several occasions we correponded about word origins.

I never saw his columns, but loved his books on language.

Could the same clone remove the item to the BS area
It will get there, never fear - no need to break the spirit of the thread by demanding that it be moved.
