Monday 11/08/10 Eisteddfod NY 2010

The fiddles fiddled -
The rosin bowed -
The banjo's picked -
The rafters runged with ringing -
It took Garcia, Peter Johnson and I nine hours -
To reach the new Hudson Valley site -
Garcia's old car had a breakdown -
The new car hired, went astray on route 28 -
Two lovely Irish ladies set us straight - offered free coffee -
The new place was huge -
Well run -
Good food - showers -
And many places for wee ceilidhs -
The NY folks did well - very well -
The workshops - were master classes -
The Artists shared their knowledge -
Yes - master classes - open classes -
The concerts - exciting classic displays -
Bernice celebrated her 97th birthday with her energy and wit -
Jerry was gracefully honored -
Well attended -
A very talented audience -
Like thinking -
No "short pants & white sneakers" -
Oh - the words - the sounds - the music -
The smiles - friendships -
The shared memories -
We have parted - but - in a way - we remain -
Needing another session for Bernice's 98th -

Correction:
I had said that John Roberts gracefully agreed to perform at Eisteddfod. At the festival someone pointed out my error. I really meant that he GRACIOUSLY agreed to perform.
Now that the festival has happened, those attending seemed tired, but happy. (Some were jamming until 4 or 5 AM). There were different favorite performers, workshops, food, etc. but overall it was GOOD. However I can report that while John Roberts agreed graciously, he performed with his usual (super) skill at music and communication, and at the contra he danced gracefully.

Here is a big THANK YOU to all who attended the 2010 Eisteddfod Traditional Music Festival at the Hudson Valley Resort and Spa in Kerhonkson, New York. Early feedback indicates that people had a wonderful time enjoying the music, the facilities, and the good company. While it is far too early to announce a specific date, we do hope you can join us at the 2011 Eisteddfod when the time comes.

In addition to the excellent musicians signed up to perform, some outstanding musicians are attending the festival. A few have been asked to participate in a workshop. See the schedule at www.folkfestny.org. Others will be listening, jamming, and sharing tunes. Someone told us that what is exciting about this weekend is mixing with the performers and hanging out with people whose recordings you have bought, etc.
If you have not registered yet, there are still rooms available. Go to www.folkfestny.org. There are also day rates.
Unfortunately Benny Graham had to cancel; he is ill. John Roberts, winner of the 2008 Eisteddfod award, gracefully agreed to appear. Debbie Lan has been added to the program.
We will have more vendors this year, so bring $$$.
The weather forecasters tell us it may be brisk or cold outside. If you don't want to hike, or play golf or tennis, there is a heated indoor swimming pool and there are spa services, if you can tear yourself away from the music.

Thanks.

If anyone would wish to sell crafts or folklore related material at the Eisteddfod, we would welcome participation in the Marketplace.

We will offer a table and free admission to the program for two people to staff it. You would be responsible for your own lodgings.

There is no fee for the table, but we will ask ten percent of your proceeds.

To discuss participating, contact publicity@folkmusicny.org.

Congratulations to Eisteddfod festival director Jerry Epstein and his longtime companion Clarice Kjerulff! They were married this past Sunday (5 September 2010) near Poughkeepsie, New York, in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Several Mudcatters attended the wedding.

Members of these co-sponsoring organizations get the same discount rate as FMSNY members:
Borderline Folk Music Club; Branford Folk Music Society; Folk Project, NJ; Folk Song Soc. of Greater Boston; New York Revels and Peoples' Music Network.

Go to the Eisteddfod site above for registration forms. There are separate ones for overnight reservations and day attendance. Do come for the day if the overnight costs in time and money are beyond your means. You won't regret it.

See you there, Steve.

I regretted having missed last year's Eisteddfod. Friends who were fortunate enogh to attend, were rapturous about it. This beautiful traditional music expresses the essence of our being. And so fine to connect with folks who also love this music.

We lifted and adapted some of the following description from NERFA, which is being held at the Hudson Valley Resort one week after the Eisteddfod. The information is just as correct for us as it is for them:

This year we will be going to the Hudson Valley Resort and conference center The HVR has recently changed hands, and the new owners have invested several million dollars in renovating, upgrading, and creating a very comfortable and beautiful resort and spa. The conference rooms are much better than those we used last year at another site. More importantly, the sleeping rooms are newly renovated, clean, and fresh. Once known as the Granite, the Hudson Valley Resort is one of the surviving grand hotels from the heyday of the Catskills. Like the other grand hotels of that bygone era, it boasts of many amenities, including expansive lobbies, a baby grand piano, and lots of nooks and crannies that make great jamming spaces. If you want to check out this place, please visit their website: www.HudsonValleyResort.com

I have been on several Eisteddfod weekends including last years one. At every one I have heard grand music from performers who were previously only names to me, and have enjoyed the wonderful pervading spirit of camaraderie. Looking at this years line-up I can tell you that the British artists will please everyone, Sheila Stewart comtinues the traditions of her famous singing, storytelling Scottish family. Benny Graham may be less well known to USA listeners, but let me tell you, it's a real scoop to have him there. Benny has a wonderful voice, a heartfelt style, an a terrific store of songs. He is very knowledgeable on the traditions of his native North East England. Miss him at your peril. Have a good Eisteddfod folks. I wish I could be there.

I've stayed at the Hudson Valley Resort a couple of times - the Northeast Folk Alliance holds it's annual conference there (this year's NERFA is taking place the following weekend), and it is very nice hotel. The food was very good, the accommodations for an event like this are superb, and I guarantee everyone will enjoy their time at Eisteddfod.   I think this might be the best setting yet for Eisteddfod!

I am really looking forward to this!   No excuses, everyone who has been thinking about going should seize this opportunity - it will be great fun!

Lots of great music and a community of folks who welcome both newcomers and old friends. Since everyone who spends the weekend is in the same facility for all activities, getting together informally is easy. Earlier iterations of the festival [S.Dartmouth, MA, Brooklyn Poly, Renaissance School in Queens] form the musical foundation for a truly wonderful weekend.
See you there??

Here's a description of the Eisteddfod's site:
Nestled amongst the beautiful Shawangunk Mountains, surrounded by the
beauty of natural waterfalls and lakes, the Hudson Valley Resort & Spa is a
setting for the rejuvenation of your body and soul. If you can tear yourself
away from the spectacular music, take advantage of the indoor swimming pool,
tennis courts, golf, and a game room with table tennis and more. There is an
spectacular staff and opportunities for jamming, talking, meeting new friends,
catching up with old friends. So join us for a special weekend.
